Wastewater treatment is a process used to remove suspended solids, biodegradable organics such as Biological
Oxygen Demand (BOD), pathogenic bacteria and nutrients from industrial and sewage wastewater. Wastewater
treatment process is segmented into three levels i.e. primary treatment (mechanical treatment), secondary
treatment (biological treatment) and tertiary treatment (advance treatment).
Primary treatment process is the first stage in wastewater treatment and is used for removal of gross,
suspended and floating solids along with BOD. Screens in conjunction with chemicals are used in primary
treatment and this helps reduce about 50-60% suspended solids and 20-30% BOD.
Secondary Treatment is also known as biological treatment and this is capable of reducing about 85% of
suspended solids and 90% of BOD. Secondary treatment is used for reduction of dissolved organic substances.
Activated sludge and trickling filters are the prime technologies used in secondary treatment.
Tertiary Treatment is also known as advanced treatment and used for reduction of about 99% impurities
present in wastewater. Tertiary treatment is an expensive process as it requires high technical expertise and
specific equipment.

Baseline Methodology :
For the study, TechSci Research has gathered information through primary research surveys with respondents from
wastewater treatment plant installers, followed by validation of information through interviews with various EPC
contractors and equipment suppliers. We also put through an exhaustive search of credible databases and
organizations including our internal database. Our team of analysts has then prudently evaluated all collected
information and presented the same in chronological order to depict a meaningful and clear picture of India
wastewater treatment plants market.
While compiling the data, we have also cross checked all collected information from multiple sources and data
warehouses, so as to present the most accurate and precise information of the concerned industry. For calculating
market share of competitors, revenues of companies have been scrutinized. The same information has then been
verified through primary research surveys with competitors to arrive at logical figures.

India Wastewater Treatment Plants Market to Grow at CAGR of over 12% through 2021
Rapid urbanization, increasing industrialization coupled with strict government regulations to drive demand for wastewatertreatment plants across India through 2021
According to TechSci Research report “India Wastewater Treatment Plants Market By Type, By Plant Category, By OperatingMode, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011-2021”, wastewater treatment plants market in India is projected togrow at a CAGR of over 12% during 2016-2021, on account of increasing water pollution, rapid urbanization, implementationof stringent regulations pertaining to proper treatment and disposal of sewage along with restrictions on discharge of effluentwastewater into water bodies. Demand for wastewater treatment plants in India is surging on account of risingindustrialization and development of residential sector that require installation of sophisticated municipal wastewatertreatment systems. Strict directives issued by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) regarding proper disposal andmanagement sewage necessitate construction of new sewage treatment plants in the country. Further, increasingpenetration of municipal wastewater treatment plants in residential and commercial sectors is projected to drive Indiawastewater treatment plants market over the next five years.
“Rising export of refinery and pharmaceutical products along with several other chemicals has increased the domesticproduction capacity and this has increased the need for installation of wastewater treatment plants across India. In addition, scarcity of water resources coupled with strict government directives have encouraged water re-use and recycling practicesthat is driving demand for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants in the country. Implementation of ZeroLiquid Discharge regulation by the government on sugar, textile, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, refineries and pulp & paperindustries, among others is further anticipated to stimulate growth in India wastewater treatment plants market through2021.’’ said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director, with TechSci Research, a research based global management consulting firm.
