The Riverhead Fire Department,which experienced considerable dif-ficulty for several month* in ob-taining a sufficient number of cou-pons for gasoline to keep it* sevenpieces of apparatus and the Hlver-head Town Protection truck sup-plied, for abaoluteiy necessary re-quirements will, in all probability,have an adequate supply in tttefuture.

When the requirements of theRivcrhead Fire District and theTown Protection District were es-timated at the beginning of theyear it was believed 1,200 gallonswould be sufficient for the ensuingtwelve months, or 300 gallons foresch quarter. In view of the factth?t it was necessary to use thefire apparatus at t. number of grassand forest fires and to respond tomany calls outbUle of the Fire Dis-trict, the allowance proved to boinadequate. Harry G Penny, sec-retary of the Riverhead Fire Dis-trict, made four or five requests tothe Riverhead representative of theOffice of Defense Transportationfor additional coupons for supple-mental supplies of gasoline, over aperiod of several months. The ODTrepresentative refused to complywith the request for supplementalsupplies, but he did consent to theFire District having coupons for100 gallon* of gasoline in advanceto be deducted from the allowanceof 300 for the succeeding quarter.

Following the disastrous fire atthe potato storage house of theLong Island Produce ft FcrtiHsurCo, l>tc, at Aqucbogue on Fridaymorning, which exhausted ti.« sup-ply of gaaoiine the Fire Districthad o : hand and with no wovecoupons to be had until the latit--part of this month, a request wasImmediately made to the local ODTrepresentative for coupons for asupplemental supply, but the re-quest, which was made by a com-mittee composed of George HMoore, -vie* chairman of the River-head FIN District, Alden W Young,chief of the Riverhead Fire De-partment, and George Crowhty,captain of the Fire and PolicePatrol, a company of the Fire De-partment, was denied. Subsequent-ly a telephone call was made byone of the members of the com-mittee to the regional headquarter*of the Office of Defense Trans-portation In New Yor't Cky, andthe request was promptly gianted,the committee being informed thatauthorization for 2OT gallons of{..<se!ir<o vould bo mailed out Fri-o'; y afternoon and assurances wortsgiven that the allowance for thaRiverhead Fire District of 300 Ks>i-lons for the last quarter of V)< iwoul.5 be increased from 300 to 500gallons. The 200 additional gallonswere obtained on Saturday.

Becoming impatient with the dif-ficulty and Inconvenience the FireDistrict had experienced in obtain-ing the minimum of its require-ments of gasoline, George W HII-dreth and George K Moore, chair-man and vice chairman, respec-tively, of the Board of Fire Com-missioners of the district, jointlyissued the following statement:

"The small and entirely inade-quate gal allowance to our FireDepartment gives rise to an alarm-ing* <-r.d perilous situation. Thedepartment during the past montbahas, on co.Il from the ConservationCommission, responded to alarmsto fight forest fires. This duty isprimarily and specifict 'ly a nrov-

Although often spoken of as theeyes and oars of the Army AirForces, the Ground ObserverCorps is rapidly proving that it isalso the eyes *nd cars of the com-munity. The five observation postslocated in Rivcrhead Town haveon numerous occasions reportedincidents to both the local law en-forcemen' agencies and fire de-partments.

Last Friday, in the wee hours ofthe morning, when most of us areenjoying our best slumber, obser-ver Fred H. Boutchcr , Jr.. attach-

Coal RulingIs Explained

Otis M Burt of Greenport, sec-retary of the Suffolk County CoalMerchants' Association, told TheReview today that, In order tofacilitate an orderly and equitabledistribution of anthraJte coal, aconsumer inventory limitation pl»nhas been adopted, in Ration OrderNo It.

"Close cooperation at.iong indus-try, government and the public isnscessary, as the apparent totalproduction for the year will notequal the demand." Mr Burt said."The Increased demand is causedby several factors, first, the con-version from oil to coal; second,crowded areas with Increased fuelrequirements in war centers; third,increased military requirements, andfourth, overtaxed transportationfacilities.

"While the known reserves ofcoal are sufficient for hundreds ofyears, reduced manpower engagedin the industry, together with thetime lost in strikes, has curtailedproduction for tl'c current year tosuch an extent there is reason tobelieve production will bo short ofdemand by 10%."

Following are excerpts from Ra-tion Order No it:

"When placing an order, the con-sumer must tell the dealer theamount of anchraclte he used dur-ing the base year (April 1, 1942 toMarch 31, 1943) , the amount onhand and the amount the customerwishes to acquire. If this infor-mation is furnished orally, it mustbe confirmed in writing not laterthan seven days after placing theorder. On and after September 2C,1943, no deliveries may be madebefore the signed statement is re-ceived. Dealers must keep thesestatements on file for one year.

"Consumers do not need to com-plete this statement If they usedno more than three tons duringthe base year, and if they havenot acquired more than l'/i tonssince September 1, 1943; but theyare required to supply the infor-mation orally.

"Consumers are urged to file tiiei?statements with the'., coal roe-chants even though the order wasplace! prior to the Ration Orderto Insure equitable distribution.

"Every dealer Is required to fol-low these rules in delivering anthra-cite coal to domestic customers:

"1. He must first fill orders fromconsumers Who have furnishedstatements showing that their in-ventory is less than one-fourth ofthe base year s consumption.

"2. Only after he has filled allthe above orders may a dealer fillan order from a consumer whohas furnished a statement that hisinventory is more than ',< but lessthan Vi of the base year's con-sumption.

"3. No dealer may make deliveryto a consumer if, on the basin ofthe statements furnished the deal-er, that delivery will bring his in-ventory to more than one-half ofhis base year's consumption.

"a. A dealer may not deliver toa consumer when he Knows theconsumer has one or more out-standing orders or contracts for de-liveries during any calendar monthwhich will bring the consumer'sinventory during that month tomore than the amount stated inRule 3. This rule prevents pyra-miding and Inflation of orders.

A fire which destroyed a two-cargarage, and an automobile, andseriously damaged a three-familyhouse atached to thd garage, InGreenport, yesterday afternoon,would, but for the prompt andefficient action of the GreenportFire Department, have threatenedthe entire block of frame dwellingsadjoining the burning building.

The apartment house, .iwned byCortland Case, of Greenport, andoccupied in its three apartmtntsby Mrs Mary Baker, Mr and MrsJoseph Little, and MM Jennie Hall,wa« damaged approximately in theamount of $1500, according to au-thorities, and the amount of dam-age to the furnishings had notbeen estimated.

The Rivcrhead schools will openfor the fall term on Tuesday, Sep-tember 14, according to John BThomas, supervising principal ofthe schools.

Because the farm labor situationis still very critical, school officialsare continuing their efforts inmaking school adjustments in or-der to make the fullest possibleuse of the labor of pupils duringthe late summer and fall monthsIn harvesting crops.

The Farm Bureau has made a"declaration of emergency" so thatlocal school authorities may releasepupils for a period of 30 days inany one school year, provided, how-ever, that no pupil shall be releasedfor more th<-.n 20 days In any threemonth period. Each pupil so re-leased must be at least 14 yearsof age.

Riverhead school authorities askthat pupils desiring such farm per-mits secure same before tho, open-ing of school on September 14 orattend school the opening day, reg-ister for classes, and secure thepermit. This will aid considerablyin makeup of classes and pcr~.itpupils who are effected by thecompulsory attendance laws to ab-sent themselves legally for pur-poses of crop gathering.

Both offices of the public schoolsare open for registration from 8to 12 and 1 to 4:30 daily. Pupi'aentering school for the first timeshould bring birth certificates withthem. Alt departments of the localschools will open for the fall termon Tuesday, September 14. Of considerable Importance toresidents and taxpayers of the Riv-erhead school district, is th« mat-ter of regular attendance of thepupils upon dally instruction.

At the annual district meetingheld last May, George W Hilo-^th,president of the Board of Educa-tion, said that decreased .itt.mi -anca in the Rivcrhead schools hadcost the district approximately$7000 In decreased state aid. Such excuses as the fol-lowing come under this heading:"Visiting," "away," "went banting,"'vacation," "went to city," "shop-ping," "work ," "needed at home,""helping at home," "taking care ofbaby," "gardening," "no shoes," "norubbers," "no clothes," "overslept ,"etc.

(The State places the responsi-bility for enforcement of the com-jiuHtory attendance law upon localschool authorities.)

Secondly, tho school district re-ceives money from the St°te basedupon actual days attendance ofpupils. Absence 'rom scnool in-creases local costs of education.

In one of the most disastrousflies in this section In many years,a large potato storage house andcontents at Aquebogue, owned bythe Long Island Produce and Fer-tilizer Co., Inc. of Riverhead, andtwo refrigerator cars on the com-pany's siding, were destroyed byfire early on Friday morning. An-other refrigerator car was badlydamaged. Two other refrigeratorcars on the same siding were tow-ed to safety by the west-boundp a s s e n g er train that passesthrough Aquebogue about 6:15 a.m., which was ordered flagged byChief Alden W. V. ung, of River-head Fire Department.

The loss to the Long IslandProduce ft Fertiliser Co, Inc. Isestimated at aboul $8,000, on thebuilainr,, and about $10,000 on thecontents, covered by insurance!and the estimated damage to thethree refrigerator cars is estimat-ed nt abcv.t $10,000 each, all ofwhich were Insured.

Approximately 4,000 bushels ofpotatoes which had been graded,were in bins on the first floor ofthe building, being made readyfor shipment. Also stored In thebuilding were 0,200 crates, inwhich potatoes are shipped, andwhich cost 20 cents each, manythousands of new potato sacksand other supplies. The sortingand conveying machinery, whichis very difficult to replace, wertamong the pieces of equipmentdestroyed. The Riverhead firemenunder the direction of Chief Youngana Second Deputy Chief PanelsR. Crelghton, rendered very ef-fective service in saving severalnearb„ structural on the com-

pany's property. Including a largemachinery storage building, theroof of which caught fire.

Shortly after the hose was laidfrom the Steeple Church creek,near the highway bridge, to thescene of the fire the west-boundpassenger train was heard ap-proaching. The firemen quicklyuncoupled the hose which waslaid across the track to preventit being destroyed by the train.

Three lines of hose, each about1,200 feet In length, was laidthrough which water was pumpedonto the fire. Five lengths ofhose burst during the operations.The bursting of hose is attributedto the fact that because of thegasoline shortages the regularhose inspections had to be aban-doned.

The fire was discovered by anobserver at the airplane spotterpost in South Jamesport, who sentIn the alarm to tho RiverheadFire Department headquarters at8:02 a. m. The firemen respondedvery promptly. Many remained onduty for a number of hours thelast of them being dismissed at7 o'clock Friday night.

The Ladies' Auxiliary of the FireDepartment and the Long IslandProduce and Fertilizer Co., servedcoffee and buns to the firemen atbreakfast time and during the af-ternoon those on duty were treat-ed to watermelon by Frank Reeve,of Aquebogue.

The origin of the fire has notbeen determined. An Investigationla being made by the Fire and Po-lice Patrol of the Riverhead FireDepartment, of which George"rowley is captain.

Gravel CraftAre Razed toWater Line

Four dilapidated wooden cargoships, which were built for theUnited States Merchant Marineduring the first World War, andwhich have been an eye-sore inthe Long Island Sound off Roan-oke, Rivcrhead, were destroyed byfire this weelr. Workmen had beenemployed by the Sound DredgingCo, Inc., cf 800 Fifth avenue, Man-hattan, for the past week in sal-vaging the cast iron and steel fromthese ships and another, which wasnot damaged by the fire. The met-al '-var to be purchased by theI,".rial -Service wo, and sent tofoundries to be used in war pro-duction.

The five ships, each being 286feet long, 44 feet beam, about 20feet high and of about 4,000 grc sston capacity, were acquired by asand and gravel company andbrought down the Sound to Roa-noke several years ago to be usedas a base tor a breakwater toprotect a harbor that wad to hedredged on property purchasedfrom the late Charles Kingsley andbeing a part of Mr. Kingsley'scountry esiate. Two of the boats,one either side of the purposed har-bor, were run into the beach andthe others were run aground.

The sand and gravel and har-bor project made little progressand after a short time the workwas abandoned and was not re-sumed.

Monday afternoon while work-men were using an acetylene blowtorch on one of the ships, thewoodwork caught fire, but It wasbelieved to have been extinguished.About 3 o'clock Tuesday morningan observer at the airplane apctterpost in Rcanoke, about one milefrom the beach, phoned the River-head Fire Department, stating thatthere was a fire in that section.Chief Alden W. Young of the Riv-erhead Fire Department was calledon the phone ard he drove Imme-diately to the scene of the fire. TheCoast Guard was. noticed andChief Boatswain's Mate Wallace J.Rldredge. and a craw from theCoast Guard SUtlnn at East Mor-iches came to the scene with amotor pumping outfit. In view ofthe fact that the Sound cliffs inthat vicinity are about 1C0 feet high,it was not possible to drive the fireapparatus to the beach. This wasa case of having plenty of water(In the Sound) but no method topump it on the burning ship. Lateron Tuesday a Coast Guard boatarrived and water was pumped onthe fourth ship burned, but theAre had gained such headway thatall efforts to save it were futile.Officers of the Naval IntelligenceIn Riverhead and John Bilski , apatrolman of the Riverhea<'< TownPolice, investigated the fire. ThereIs no suspicion that the fire wasdue to sabotage, it is assumedthat it was purely an accident.Other firemen responding wereTheodore Breil.ng and Second Dep-uty Chief Francis R. Creighton.

It Is estimated that each of thefive ships contained about 400 tonsof cast iron and steel and about000 tons had been salvaged.

The Armistice was signed in 1918before these and hundreds of othercargo ships built for the MerchantMarine were placed in commission.The engines had not been installedin these and other ships. It isstated the cost of each of theseships completely equipped was inthe neighborhood of $900,000.

Within the last year one of theseships was towed to New York andInspected with a view to using itfor tranrportlng coal, but expertsdetermined It would not serve thatpurpore so It was tov/cd back toRoanoke "harbor."

The estate has V*en In possessionof the Monks famll} for manyyears. About three years ago itwas taken over by the Corn Ex-change Bank Trust Company tosatisfy liens approximating 170,000,and the present purchase wasmade from the bank. The latterwas represented in the transactionby the legal firm of Spence, Wind-els, Walser, HotchkiM ft Angell.

The property Is bounded on thenorth by the Joseph P. and W. R.Grace property, and on the southby the holdings of James W, Ge-rard, former Ambassador to Ger-many, and his brother, SumnerGerard. The acreage also has afrontage of 2,800 feet on North-west Harbor.
