Video Clip for 9/11 CommemorationProject report prepared by Iwan Dzulvan Amir
1
I. Background
On the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist
attacks, the U.S. will hold several commemorative
events to honor the victims of that tragic day, heal the
wounds caused by terrorism and war, and bring together
people of different ages, backgrounds and faiths to gain
new strength in moving forward as a nation.
Search for Common Ground (SFCG) and Partners inHumanity (PiH) are contributing to the commemoration
activities in 2011. Contributions from SFCG offices from around the world is
underway including from the SFCG Indonesia office, which main contribution is in the
form of an article to be published in the Common Ground News (CG News) service.
To complement the article from the SFCG Indonesia office, the CG News team has
produced a video clip, which is released on the internet for a general public audience.
This video clip is less than 8 minutes in length, and primarily consists of interviews
with young people who are still children when 9/11 happened. They recall what and
how they learned about the tragedy, which will hopefully illustrate how issues that
follow 9/11 are perceived differently outside the U.S.
II. Target
The target of this project is to create a video clip for the general public that:
Represent some of the opinions of young people regarding 9/11;
Represent some of the opinions of Indonesians
regarding 9/11;
Attract attention to how 9/11 is perceived
differently outside the U.S.;
Contribute to the promotion of the CG News
service to the public;
Is released in time to commemorate the 9/11
terrorist attack.

Humanity for Muslim-Western Understanding, located at the Search for Common Ground Indonesia
office in Jakarta.

III. Methodology
The method of creating the video clip is two-part. The first part is to create a brief,
illustrative and most importantly, attractive introductory segment for the video clip.
This segment is 2-3 minutes long. Its primary aim is to raise the viewers interest toview the entire video clip rather than just browse.
The second part is to create the main body of the
video clip, which are excerpts from the interviews.
The overall flow of the main body is to start with
the poorly informed views of these youths,
followed by the consequences as represented by
the conclusions that they drew from those views,
and ended by the surprisingly positive outlook that
they have in facing the future as shaped by the
9/11 tragedy.
The pacing of the editing is fast, with interview subjects lasting no more than 5-10
seconds per appearance. This was achieved by targetting soundbytes that are in
sync with the planned flow of the video clip. Other factors are also taken into account,
including the quality of the video and audio recording, the age of the interview
subjects, and the background view of the interview. Interviews that are in Bahasa
Indonesia were translated into English and put into subtitles.
IV. Goal, Objectives, and Results
A. Goal
The main goal of this project is to promote common understanding between the U.S.
and Indonesia through producing a video clip and distribute it through public media
outlets that are accessible to the public in both countries.
B. Specific objectives
Contribute to the 9/11 Commemoration activities in 2011; SFCG and CG News have an additional tool to
better spread the messages of peaceful co-
existence and understanding;
Better understanding of how issues, actions
and their consequences are perceived
differently by people on different parts of the
world;
Violent conflict resolution is discouraged and
is advanced through the utilisation of new
media.

C. Expected results
Viewers gain knowledge on how young people
in Indonesia views 9/11 specifically and the
U.S. in general;
Viewers gain knowledge on issues, actions and
their consequences are related to peaceful co-
existence and understanding;
Viewers are made aware of the Common
Ground News Service online.
D. Contribution to significant changes
Utilisation of Common Ground approaches by U.S. and Indonesian viewers;
Behavioral changes and adjustments (mutual respect, tolerance).
V. Activities
The production of the video clip spanned four months (May August 2011) and was
broken down into five different phases.
A. Phase I: Initial development (19 May 09 June 2011)
The project started with the Partners in Humanity (PiH) team meeting (19/05/2011) to
plan for contributing to the 10-Year Commemoration of 9/11 in September 2011. The
concept was further developed with various discussions and meetings at SFCG
offices in both Jakarta and DC.
B. Phase II: Pre-production (14 June 01 July 2011)
Background research was conducted in order to determine the potential direction and
form for the video clip. The research results was
then taken to the 1st production team meeting,
where further brainstorming on how the
production process will take place was conducted.
The production team consisted of a combination
of staff, interns, and external consultants from thepartner organization. The meeting divided tasks
and drafted a working timeframe.
C. Phase III: Production (01 July 18 July 2011)
This phase include principal and secondary shooting of video footages, the
digitisation of the recorded footages, and the 2nd production team meeting where the
production team evaluated the content and quality of the footages.
D. Phase IV: Post-production (19 July 19 August 2011)
This phase started with the 3rd production team meeting where team members
planned the draft script and tackled other post-production issues. The video was

edited in accordance to the script and was screened to a test audience. The video
clip was then modified to take into account of the feedback from the audience and
was presented to the DC office for review. Feedback from DC was then used to
further change the video clip, specifically the introduction segment, changing it from a
wayang(traditional Javanese shadow-puppetry) performance into a more minimalist
introduction. Following final feedback and approval from DC office, a hardcopy
(video-DVD) of the final version was then sent to DC office for distribution.
E. Phase V: Dissemination (22 30 August 2011)
The final version of the video clip will be uploaded
by the DC office and launched in conjunction with
the publication of the 9/11 Commemoration article
from Indonesia n late August 2011.
A complete list of activities related to theproduction of the video clip is included in
Appendix 1 of this report.
VI. Sustainability and Impact
The sustainability of this project is embedded into the content of this video clip, as it
is designed to develop the knowledge and goodwill necessary for U.S. and
Indonesian audiences including CG News partner organisations to further their
understanding of Western-Muslim understanding in the context of post-9/11 world,thereby ensuring a lasting impact. Moreover, CG News is investing in Indonesias
future with programs that are easily replicable. Therefore, this video clip project uses
a cultural approach, with recognition of the complex conflict dynamics in Indonesia.
VII. Producers
The Partners in Humanity (PiH) programme seeks to address feelings of mutual fear
and suspicion that exist between the West, especially the U.S., and the Muslim world
because of perceived and real injustices, extreme inequality in political and economicopportunity, and pervasive stereotyping. PiH programs, including this video clip
project, seek to cultivate a sense of shared destiny and serve as a catalyst for
Muslim-Western partnerships that reflect mutual respect, a shared commitment to
addressing problems and meeting needs, and an ongoing process of mutual learning
and challenging of stereotypes.
The main partner in this video clip project is the Search for Common Ground (SFCG),
which is the largest international non-governmental organisation working in the field
of conflict transformation in 19 countries world-wide and has been working with youth
since the 1980s. SFCG has been in Indonesia since 2002 and has established strong

working relationships with local officials, community and religious leaders, as well as
local organisations in Aceh, Bali, Java, Kalimantan, Madura, Papua and Sulawesi. It
has been working with children and youth by working horisontally to reach as wide
and varied an audience as possible, and working vertically to target key individuals
and institutions. SFCG Indonesias key component of youth programming is the
media, which is instrumental in reaching broad and diverse groups of youth in the
target communities.
The other partner in this project is the Pusat Pengkajian Islam dan Masyarakat
(Study of Islam and Society Centre or PPIM), which is a research and publication unit
at the Universitas Islam Negeri (State Islamic University) Syarif Hidayatullah. PPIM
develops quality research on Islam and Muslim communities in Indonesia (including
their relationship with other communities), disseminate recent research results and
findings through various forums and publications, and cooperate with institutions and
organizations in facilitating the development of a tolerant, open and peaceful Muslimcommunity in Indonesia.
