Step 1: Undercoat
Apply a smooth coat of White Gesso Paint to your entire
Canvas and allow it to dry. Then create a mix from Yellow
Ochre and Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint and scrub this onto
your Canvas. This will give the next layer of paint
something to key onto and add a lovely warmth to the
painting.
Step 2: Dark Underpainting
Mix some Crimson Red, Ultramarine and Burnt Umber with
a tiny bit of turpentine. Then paint in the tree and land with
the #6 Filbert Brush. This does not have to be a perfect
tonal rendering, just try to get the shape right. An image
has been provided for your reference on the last page of
this PDF.

Step 3: Sky
Paint a mix of Ultramarine, a spot of Crimson and plenty of
White in the lower portion of the sky. Then add a spot of
Phthalo into your Blue mix and paint this into the top of the
sky with the #16 Bright Brush. Gently blend the two Blues
together and then add some fluffy White clouds here and
there.
Step 4: Water
Into the Sky Blue mix, add some Viridian and paint this into
the water. Add a White line across the horizon to suggest
waves and blend in streaks of White into the water for the
reflections.
When applying your
colours in this painting,
dab it on and try not to mix
the colours together.

Step 6: Reflection
Into the mid Green add some White and a spot of Burnt
Umber. With this mix block in an area to suggest the tree’s
reflection on to the water, blend it in and soften the edges.
Step 8: Detailing
Use a thin mix of Black and Turps to paint in some hanging
roots with your Fine Liner Brush. Then dot in some of the Sky
mix in to the foliage, this will suggest holes in the foliage.
Step 7: Roots
With the end of the brush scrape back root shapes around
the bottom of the tree. Create a believable root pattern
with curving strokes. Then make a light earthy colour from
a mix of Burnt Sienna and White and paint it into the areas
highlight on the tree with the Fine Liner Brush. Lay a few
spots on to the tree boughs to suggest dappled light.
until next time...
Step 5: Foliage
Create a dark, medium and light Green for the foliage
from: Lemon Yellow + Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow +
Pythalo Blue, Medium Yellow + Ultramarine Blue. Lay these
into the tree starting with the darkest tone, refer to the PDF
to show you where to lay the three tones. Lastly lay some
pure Lemon Yellow on the tree, mainly in to the outer
foliage to suggest the light catching certain leaves.
