Principal’s report School improvement involves leadership, teachers, culture, resources, pedagogy and the broader school community all
working in unison to change school practices in ways that lead to better student outcomes. (ACER 2016).
Welcome back for Term 2 Welcome back to Term 2 and I look forward to working with our staff and students in making this another productive term. I hope students, staff, their families and friends have had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Much happened in Term 1, especially the whole school review, and we thank everyone for their dedication and commitment. Term 2 is always a very crucial time that sees all of our students involved in examinations/major assessment tasks that will take place over coming weeks. All students studying a VCE Unit 3 and 4 subject will undertake the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Wednesday 12 June. I wish our students well as they prepare for each of their assessment tasks. I ask them to use the resources we have available to help them prepare for this period. ANZAC Assembly I wish to thank our student leadership team and the student management team for organising a respectful and moving ANZAC ceremony. I spoke about my time visiting Gallipoli (Turkey) and Villers-Bretonneux (France) and the understanding of the ANZACs tradition. I was moved by the way our students spoke and how each individual placed a poppy in the urn to show respect for the fallen in the world wars. NAPLAN TESTING NAPLAN testing will be undertaken by students in Years 7 and 9 at the College on Tuesday 14 May, Wednesday 15 May and Thursday 16 May. We ask students to be punctual, organised and to maintain a mature approach to the NAPLAN tests. Students need to remember to bring a basic calculator on Thursday 16 for the Numeracy test. Your child may bring a reading novel to the test if they finish early. Results will be sent home to students late in Term 3. School Strategic Plan 2019 - 2022 In Term 2, we will be working on developing the school leadership plan for 2019 to 2020. Part of this process will be involve staff, student and parent focus groups to enable us to develop a new vision, direction and values for the Box Hill Senior Secondary College community.

School Tours Starting from Wednesday 1st May, I will be conducting a school tour every Wednesday for prospective families that wish to enrol at the college in 2020. I invite all prospective families that are thinking about changing schools to a more adult environment to join me on a tour as we visit classrooms, talk to teachers and students. Please book a place via our website (www.bhssc.vic.edu.au ). New BHSSC Website A group of dedicated BHSSC staff have been working on the new website. It will be live from Thursday 9th May. Take a look. A special thank you to Fiona Erwich, Karen Leeder and Zoran Nikolic for the dedication and hard work on this. Keeping up to date by using Compass Important school information for parents and students is published on Compass. News items and payments due (eg for excursions) are published on My News. Clicking on the Profile link provides access to student’s timetable, attendance records (including daily attendance) and the Progress Reports. Parents are urged to check their Compass account at least once a week and if you have any issues accessing your account, please contact the Registrar on 03 9890 0571.
Professional Learning
The College is fortunate to have the services of Jane Thornton (Education Improvement Leader) from the North East Regional team throughout Term 2. She will be working with our teaching staff with a focus on analysing data, differentiation within the classroom and developing an instructional model.
Consenting & Paying for Excursions/Incursions/Camps on Compass Teachers plan for school events (incursions/excursions/camps) well in advance. One of the requirements when planning, is that, all payments and consent must be received three (3) business days prior to the event. This enables the Event Coordinator and Operations Planning Team to finalise all of the required documentation or cancel the event if insufficient student numbers. Payment/consent will not be accepted once the event has been closed. Please assist us by checking Compass every week and processing any event consent/payment before the due date. If you require any support with this process, please contact the General Office. Note - students cannot attend an event without parent consent or payment. Mark Quinlan Principal (Acting)
BHSSC Sport Uniforms
During the past few months, a review of the design and components of the sport uniforms provided to Sport Academy
students has been undertaken. Although each sport has its own specific uniform requirements, it is apparent that there is
inconsistency in in the representation of the College, in the use of colours and logos and some items are outdated in design.
As a result, a sport clothing company was requested to develop some new designs for the various uniforms. Students have
been consulted regarding these items and the College Council has now endorsed these designs. (See designs below)
As students are required to purchase a uniform kit in the first year that they commence in the sport academy programs, it is
planned to roll out these new designs over the next two years.
This year the following items will be available:-
AFLW – new uniform kit available including playing uniform, training long sleeve t shirt, singlet, hoodie & socks;
TENNIS – new uniform kit available including polo, hoodie and training long sleeve T shirt;
ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT – new training long sleeve T-shirt, hoodie & singlet
New Hoodies and training T shirts will also be provided in the uniform kits provided to those students who have
commenced in the Basketball, AFL and Netball Academies this year.
In 2020, new uniform kits, including new playing uniforms will be available for the sports of Basketball, AFL and Netball.
For more information and order forms, please contact Myles Ashton on 9890 0571.

CAREERS AND PATHWAYS INFORMATION
An educational pathway is the term used to describe the sequence of studies students choose to reach a qualification and ultimately a career. Different pathways can lead to similar outcomes so it is a good idea to plan a variety of pathways and compare them to decide which suit you best. If you keep informed, talk to others, attend seminars, go to Open Days and do research you are more likely to make appropriate career decisions, and find it easier to make those decisions. It is now the time for students to start planning. Students from all levels are welcome to come to the Careers Office for assistance. Yr 11 VET - Structured Workplace Learning Students undertaking a Yr 11 VET program in the areas listed below are expected to complete 1 week of work placement in the week of September 16 to 20.
Electro-technology (Pre-apprenticeship)
Building & Construction
Plumbing
Landscape Horticulture
Sport and Recreation
Work placement is strongly recommended by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority for vocational programs. Assessments are usually embedded into structured work placements. If a student does not satisfy the assessment requirements they will not be able to complete their certificate. In addition to this, work placements are a valuable aid to gaining an apprenticeship. The final date to apply for a work placement is Monday September 2, 2019. Any student who does not undertake work placement in the week beginning Sept. 16 will be required to attend school for all their normal classes. Parents/Guardians are requested to assist in organising a suitable work placement. Structured Work Placement forms and assistance are available from the Careers and Pathways Coordinator (Frank De Melis) who is located in the Library.

Tax File Numbers (TFN)
Any student that starts work (casual, part-time or full-time) during the year will need a Tax File Number. Current Year 12
students are reminded that they cannot enrol in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) course at university without a TFN
so it is worthwhile applying for one this year!

The VCAA VCE English Study Design allows for students to engage in the analysis of texts through the
Area of Study – Reading and Creating texts. This year already, BHSSC Year 12 English students have
studied and creatively responded to the film text Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Recently,
students have analysed the anthology of short stories, Like a House on Fire, by Australian author Cate
Kennedy. Students have produced short and extended writing pieces, and analysed the author’s
decisions for their writing, and their views and values. Within these two texts, students explore themes of
communication and miscommunication, observing others and self-reflection, an individual’s ability to
overcome adversity, and the effects of isolation.
BHSSC Year 12 English students are heading toward the next Area of Study – Analysing Argument,
where they will have the opportunity to learn of writers’ skills in persuading an audience. Following this
unit, students will focus on an issue within the media, and will form their opinion on this issue, with view
of persuading their intended audience. Year 12 English students are to be congratulated on the level of
commitment they have demonstrated this semester, and we look forward to hearing of their success in
the upcoming unit of study.

Basketball news.
Congratulations go to the boys and girls senior basketball teams for winning the district finals. Lots of basketball coming up
with all senior boys and girls teams playing in VCC with the winning teams going through to the finals.
A reminder to parents that all compass approval should be signed of three working days before the playing date so that your
sons and daughters can attend.
Sport Update – May
Term 2 is always a very busy time. We started with Cross-country and a
small contingent of runners. Congratulations to Rhian Thomsett and Emma
Loncarevic who finished first and second respectively in the U17 age group.
Ashley Gilby finished a strong second in the U 13 girls. EMR cross-country
is the next stage on 18 June.
The intermediate AFL boys recently played in the Whitehorse District round
robin. They played four “short” games and won all. This means they will
proceed to EMR on 23rd July. Better players included Daniel Owen, Jaymie
Kempson, Ryan Symons and Jason McCormick. A great effort from all of
them.
The senior girls’ soccer played in the Whitehorse round robin and participated well. They were a little overwhelmed but gave it
their all.
In tennis, the intermediate boys narrowly went down in the EMR round robin. The senior boys will be competing in the State
finals and hopefully can defend their title.
Upcoming events
Intermediate boys and girls soccer Monday 13th May
Senior girls AFL Whitehorse round robin 24th May
Good luck to the teams in upcoming events.
