Claus Schiedek, Marketing Manager After-
market at the Construction Tools Division
says: Compared with the prior-year period,
Atlas Copco Construction Tools has recorded
a significant increase in sales of workingtools, spare and wear parts. We expect
further double-digit growth in 2006.
With the past few years having been very
successful, we now have a large number of
units in the markets which need spare and
wear parts. As a result, increasing sales are
a foregone conclusion.
But we are also seeing a trend away from
no-name parts toward reliable original parts.
From a commercial point of view, it is afiasco when not only a hydraulic breaker but
also carriers, loaders and trucks come to an
unscheduled standstill because
a cheaper pirate part has been
used which was unable to cope
with the stresses of breaker
operation. I am convinced thatour efforts to point this out have
been accepted by our custom-
ers and are now starting to
bear fruit.
Schiedek admits that the
strong demand for some
products has resulted in supply
shortages in the past, but says
that measures were implement-
ed at an early stage to ensure
that all products are available
quickly.
To be able to meet all orders,
production operations have
been switched from 2 to 3
shifts, with work also on Sun-
days and public holidays if required. These
measures have resulted in a considerable
improvement in productivity.
Outsourcing production of core products
and the related know-how is out of thequestion the company has no intention of
leaving development and production to other
manufacturers. Its modern equipment and
highly qualified staff are a prerequisite for
top-quality end products.
As Claus Schiedek sees it, demand for
products Made by Atlas Copco will remain
very strong in the future if customers are
looking for reliability and cost-efficiency.
For professionals, there is no alternative tothe original, he says.

A voyage in time
The history of the East Indiaman Ghte-
borg is a voyage back through the time;
an exciting journey through discoveries in
unknown parts of the world and in trade with
faraways lands.
The Swedish East India Company was a
trading company whose business would ful-
fill Swedens desire for the exotic. From 1731
to 1806, 37 different ships conducted 132
expeditions between Gtheborg in Sweden
and Canton (Guangzhou) in China.
On 12 September 1745, the East Indiaman
Gtheborg was returning home for her thirdvoyage to China, after almost two years at
sea. Alas the vessel ran aground in the
entrance to Gothenburg harbor and sunk
with her entire cargo.
Repeated attemps were made to salvage
the valuable cargo but eventually the Gthe-
borg was forgotten, until 240 years later
when a driver rediscovered her and began
a marine-archaeological excavation. This
marked the beginning of the East IndiamanGtheborg project, and her voyage into the
future.
In December 1993 the Svenska Ostindiska
Companiet AB was formed. In June 1995
the keel was laid as a symbol of the start of
building work on a full-scale replica of the
East Indiaman Gtheborg. She was launched
eight years later.
The vessel is a tail-wind sailing ship, built to
carry as much cargo as possible a kind of
18th century supertanker. The old East India-
men had a crew of around 120.
The Gtheborg East Indiaman replica charts
China trade route for Atlas Copco
For over 100 years Atlas Copco has fol-lowed broadly in the route of the original
vessels, opening offices and factories in
some barely charted markets, bringing new
methods, equipment and ground breaking
technology to benefit hundreds of communi-
ties in every continent and provide a basis
for their growth.
The importance of China
When the East Indiaman sailed for the firsttime, China was a major trading nation which
accounted for one third of the worlds GNP.
Let's set the sails!
Now, over 250 years later, trade with China
is once again very important. Atlas Copco
has been operating in China since the 1920s,
and was in fact one of the very first foreign
companies to establish a Representative
Office there in 1984. Today, Atlas Copco has
over 85 offices and five production sites
in China, employing around 1.600 people.
China accounts for around six percent of the
Groups business, a figure that Atlas Copco
is committed to increasing in the future.
This attractive project offers new
opportunities to build long-term
relations with authorities and custom-
ers, says Gunnar Brock, President
and CEO. The enormous attention
the East Indiaman project has created
in China will be used to strengthen
the value of our brand in one of the
worlds most important markets.
Atlas Copco will market its brand through
the East Indiaman in particular in Sweden,
South Africa and China, but also in other
places where the ship makes its stops.

Traditional craftsmanship meets modern
technology
Gtheborg has all the outward appear-
ance of an 18th Century East Indiaman but
carries modern equipment beneath the
waterline. During the construction of the
Gtheborg, an Atlas Copco screw compres-sor provided compressed air to run the air
tools. Now, in the lower hull, an Atlas Copco
high-pressure piston compressor is used to
start the main engine, and a refrigerant dryer
ensures that the air is moisture free. Techni-
cal air on board is supplied by an Atlas
Copco oil-free scroll compressor.

This characterizes the latest exercise of a type CC 2100 U demo-
lition cutter in Kielce in Poland.
In only 4 days it demolished a boiler house with its steel girders
and concrete shell which was part of the Wisniowka combined
heating and power station.
The 20 m high three-storey edifice was built around a steel
skeleton made of up to impressive thick sections. Conditions justperfect for the CC 2100 U mounted on a CAT 322, both owned by
Energopol Poludnie from Sosnowiec. With its universal arms
(U), cutters and crushing teeth it can cut steel girders and at the
same time crush concrete structures.
And the demolition cutter came in handy as it could indulge in
another favourite activity: it crushed the materials and separated
them to keep dumping costs low and to allow as much material
as possible to be recycled.
Jean-Marc Venzon, foreman at theKirchhoff E.S.B.Betonsanierungen com-
pany, is completely sold on the SB 200
As an experienced construction specialist,
he believes hydraulic breakers must offer
three main things: high percussive perform-
ance, good handling and effective silencing.
And it is exactly these three features that he
likes so much on the SB 200.
With a single blow energy of 406 joules
and an impact rate of 1800 blows per
minute, the SB 200 is one of the most powerful
breakers in its class. In addition, a special
damping system makes the unit very quiet
only 118 dB(A), while its slim, compact de-
sign makes the breaker particularly suitable forbreaking and demolition jobs in tight situations.
Kirchhoff recently used the SB 200 on a
bridge redevelopment job on the A81 high-
way near Herrenberg in Germany. An old
temporary bridge had to be replaced by a
new one, which involved breaking away the
concrete deep into the structural concrete
while retaining the steel reinforcements.
As always on highway jobs, the schedule
for the work was extremely tight, so the de-

cision was made to use highly reliable and
powerful equipment. An SB 200 was used,
mounted on a Kubota K X 101.3 excavator.

Cut-off sawsThese powerful, lightweight and compact
saws can be used to cut through concrete,
asphalt and steel. In combination with a
lightweight cart, the saws can be used on
floors and roads for cutting joints and other
light surface sawing jobs. Their simple directdrive reduces maintenance requirements
and makes them insusceptible to dust, water,
etc. They have no electrical components and
operate spark-free, guaranteeing safe work-
ing in building interiors, hazardous zones and
even underwater.
Core drillsCore drills are ideal for working in con-
fined spaces where there is no room for
a drill stand. Thanks to their non-kickback
operation, they can be used manually to drill
holes of up to 200 mm diameter. They arefully hydraulic and are ideal for wet diamond
core drilling, e.g. in reinforced concrete.
They have no electrical components and
operate spark-free, guaranteeing safe work-
ing in building interiors, hazardous zones and
even underwater.
Water pumpsLightweight, compact submersible pumps
used e.g. for the continuous pumping of cleanor contaminated water on building sites and
in flooded excavation sites and cellars.
Ground rod drivers and postdrivers
These units are used to drive ground
rods, road barrier tubes, profiles, signposts,
fences and anchors. They allow a wide
range of post sizes to be driven stably and
powerfully at high speed.
Post pullersAtlas Copco post pullers have hardened
jaws and automatic chain tighteners, making
them ideal for pulling any wood or steel
posts including IPE, HPE and UPE profiles as
well as round and square steel tubes. The
integrated hand leverage function increases
pulling force to up to 10 metric tons.
Handheld posthole borersThese compact and efficient tools bore
holes up to 1.3 m deep and with diametres
of between 90 and 350 mm. They feature
reverse rotation and are designed for
operation by two persons.
All rotary tools have a hydraulic torque
limiter, making them particularly safe to use.
Atlas Copco regards these additions as
a logical extension to its range of handheld
units with strong future potential.

We cant work without our Cobras! When workers from the Leonhard Weiss
company make their way to the rail tracks, each of the men has his Cobra with him.
We are not talking about snake
charmers or reptile lovers, but rather
about specialised track repair work
for public and private railways, known
in the business as tamping.
At crossings and turnouts in par-
ticular, the ballast works loose and the
track bed eventually loses stability.
The ballast has to be pushed backunder the rail and compacted; the rail
is tamped.
Rail tracks are the Cobra TTs
natural environment but the Cobra TT is
neither a predator, nor is it dangerous: it
is a gasoline-driven tie tamper developed
specially for rail track work.
The two-stroke gas-oil engine is low on
noise and emissions (to EPA 1), making it
particularly environment-friendly. Its robust
percussion mechanism delivers up to 1,620
blows per minute with a single blow energy
of 40 joules.
70 Cobras right on track!70 Cobras right on track!Long-stroke springs and adjustable han-
dles dampen vibrations and allow the Cobra
TT to be used for longer periods, and, at just24 kilos, it can be transported easily
to even the remotest sites.
Foreman Bergenkmper from Le-
onard Weiss says: We wouldnt like
to do without our Cobras any more.
That would explain why over the
years Leonhard Weiss has built up its
Cobra numbers to over 70.
Leonhard Weiss has branches all
over Germany, employs around 2,600people and operates on the principle
of Make work enjoyable.
It looks as if the Cobra TT fits in
perfectly with this motto ...

During 2002 Atlas Copco phased out the
long-time popular petrol drill and breaker
Cobra 149/248. These two machines had then
served the market for almost 20 years. The
reason for taking them off the market was
that they didnt meet the new European and
US environmental directives concerningnoise and emission. Instead the combined
drill/breaker Cobra Combi was launched in
2003. And the response from the market has
so far been fantastic.
To follow up this success, a breaker ver-
sion of the Cobra Combi was launched in
June 2005 Cobra Standard. Compared to
earlier versions, these two machines offer
less vibration, less noise, and cleaner emis-
sions. And a new carburettor and choke con-
trol system makes the start process easier.
Cobra Standard is perfect for tie-tamping,
small road and repair jobs such as cutting, digging and compacting of smaller areas. It
is also suitable for different types of driving
applications, for example fencing, rods,
earth anchors, poles and spikes.
By using the optional guide roller to ease
the start process, Cobra Standard is perfect
to use for driving soil sampling rods or other
driving applications where the machine is
positioned 0.75-1.5 m above the ground. The machine is delivered in a wooden
transport box, including a flat chisel, a fuel
can and a bottle of 2-stroke oil - ready to go.

Forty kilometres of three lane dual carriage-

Egans Plant Hire is on hourly

of the six lane tunnel beneath
Mullum Mullum Creek and the

the job.
According to Michael Egan,
the decision to buy two HB
4200s was based largely on the
relationship between the com-
pany and Atlas Copco coupled
with the positive comments
Egans competitors had made about
Atlas Copco hammers.
In the tunnel, the HB 4200 is working 10
hours a day, six days a week, in rock ranging
from sand stone to hard blue metal.
The hammer is performing well, its the

The breaker that packs thehardest punch
The MB 700 not only has a significantly lowerpower rating (which has a positive effect on the
carriers fuel consumption), it also provides a
significantly higher power output than the pred-
ecessor model. At 1.450 Joules (AEM), it delivers
the highest single blow energy of any breaker in
the 650 to 850 kg class.
ContiLubekeeps things runningsmoothly
The MB 700 is also the first hydraulic breakerin its class fitted with an automatic lubrication
system as standard. The ContiLubeII lube
system is mounted directly on the breaker box,
guaranteeing optimised lubrication and eliminat-
ing the need for tedious and time-consuming
manual lubrication.
Noise and vibrations?No thank you!
The VibroSilenced system provides the MB700 with particularly effective noise and vibration
damping.
With a sound power level of just 118 dB(A) it is
ideal for use in inner-city areas.
The vibration damping system not onlyprotects the carrier against damaging vibrations,
it also reduces the strain on the
carrier operator.
Dust has no chance inthis contest
For all jobs with high dust
emissions (e.g. horizontal/
overhead working), the MB
700 can also be fitted with
the DustProtector system.
DustProtector effectively
prevents dust and foreign bodies from penetrat-
ing the lower breaker section and thus enhances
the reliability and lifetime of the breaker.

Our intention with the new MB 700
is not only to show what is technically
possible in this breaker class,
but also to stick to our policy of
consistently offering new prod-

some time that users of medium-duty hydraulic
breakers are more discerning than they are fre-
quently given credit for. During our market stud-
ies we were surprised to learn that we are the
first company to offer certain technical features
in this breaker class. Im convinced that other
manufacturers will have to follow suit shortly,

In connection with the preparationsmade for building a tunnel tube through the
Lac du Chevril, some 700 cubic metres of
granite had to be cut out of the rock faces to
straighten several dangerous road bends.
Jean Luc Nalin who drives an excavator
of Figuere Entreprise has worked with the
new HB 4200 and is completely enthusiastic:
Great how few vibrations the breaker
is producing during operation. It is
much quieter than any otherbreaker I have ever worked
with. This one could turn out to
be my absolute favourite.
Site manager, Gerome Sauve Bois com-
mented: The breaker works as reliable and
with the same high breaking capacity as our
other Krupp and Atlas Copco breakers. But
what really stunned us is the automatic lubri-
cation system that we are using for the first
time. The ContiLubeII is completely new to
us. This fully automatic lube system saves a
lot of time the operator must not interruptthe work and carry out the unpopular lubri-
cation by hand, because ContiLubeII
now takes care of that. This is an enormous
advantage for us, because this system
clearly improves our productivity!
The ContiLubeII is coupled to
the breaker and is only deliver-
ing the lubricant when the
breaker is in operation. It en-
sures that the breaker is always suppliedwith the optimum quantity of chisel paste.
Unlike other systems the ContiLubeII is di-
rectly mounted on the breaker box where all
connections are very well protected. There
are no long hoses running over the excava-
tor boom up to the lubricant tank.
The lubricant cartridge which can be
refilled is quickly replaced without any
additional tools being needed.

Now, with the acquisition of Krupp Berco
Bautechnik by Atlas Copco, many promising
perspectives and opportunities have arisen
though which STET can develop the sales and
marketing of hydraulic breakers throughout the
country.
With this agreement, we are sure that
now, as in the past, we can continue to put a
trustworthy product at our clients disposal, and one that is backed up by a recognized high
standard of service, said Ernesto Ramos.

In the first demolition phase, a CC 2100 Udemolition cutter was used to tear down the
entire building. It was mounted on a CAT 330
C with a 20 m demolition boom which was
long enough to reach even the upper stories.
The cutter was equipped with universal
(U) jaws with teeth at the tips to crush the
concrete and carbide blades in the rear sec-
tion to cut through the rebar.
Once the building had been pulled to the
ground, the pulverizer was brought in on aCAT 325 C to reduce the rubble and separate
the concrete from the steel rebar.

of pipelines are under construction. Many
infrastructure projects are underway and
more highways are being built up.
Huge investments in newequipment
Construction on this scale, within limitedtime span, has meant most of the major
contractors investing in an enormous range
of new equipment. High quality, service
back up and parts availability is the major
consideration in the purchase negotiations.
So far, Atlas Copco has been able to sell
more than 250 medium and heavy hydraulic
breakers and more than a 1,000 units of
Hand held construction equipment in the
Gulf area in the past two years. All products
have been performing efficiently with a
wide network of distributors offering on-site
service and support.
In Qatar, one of the major projects in
progress today is the Ras Laffan Masaeed
Sweet Gas Pipeline, 250 MUSD. The interna-
tional M/s Consolidated Contractors Company
is the main contractor, who runs a huge fleet
of HB 3000, HB 4200 and HB 5800 units. One
of the main reasons for choosing Atlas Copco
breakers is productivity coupled with avail-
ability, product support and service, says Mr.Imad Beirouty, the Area Plant Manager.
Another major offshore project in Qatar
is the Pearl of the Gulf Island. The main
contractor is Qatar Dredging Company, with.
SAWABHI Contractor Company as one of the
main sub-contractors for QDC. Mr. Shamas
Gul, owner of SAWABHI Contractor Com-
pany, is a very well known businessman in
Doha and is popular in the field of construc-
tion, excavation and trenching. Now, he is
fully engaged with the prestigious Pearl
Qatar Project in Doha with a large fleet of
Atlas Copco rock breakers, ranging from
MB 1600s to HB 3000s. He is fully confident
of completing the time-limited excavation
work with Atlas Copco rock breakers. M/s
Sawabhi, together with the Atlas Copco dis-
tributor, Al Obeidly, have been able to prove
to the main client the efficiency of Atlas
Copco breakers in comparison to any other
competitors equipment.
Ten HB 3000s in OmanThe Southern Express Way in Oman will
be the first project in Oman where 10 of our
HB 3000s will have to excavate huge amount
of rock. The main contractor, GALFAR, has
decided to opt for Atlas Copco breakers
because the company needs long term
product support and service back up. This
level of support and service is what the local
Atlas Copco distributor IAPC has been able
to demonstrate conclusively within their
territory.

New Jersey marine company finds opportunities in maintenance dredging. When thinking about maintenance, a ship-
ping channel likely is not the first thing that
comes to mind. However, these waterways
require periodic attention. Tides, currents
and river flow cause sand, gravel and silt to
build up over time, which reduces the depth
of a channel. The sediment must occasion-
ally be removed from the bottom of the
channel to maintain safe water depths forship navigation and ensure that traffic flow
to ports continues uninterrupted.
Larger ships - deeper channelsAdditionally, as the amount of trade and
cargo moving through ports has increased,
the size of commercial vessels has also
increased. These larger ships require deeper
channels through which to navigate.
Donjon Marine Company has recognized
maintenance dredging as an opportunity to
increase its business. Founded in 1964, the
companys primary focuses include marine
salvage, transportation and ocean engineer-
ing. However, Donjon Marine capitalized on
the changing shipping industry to expand its
services by entering the dredging arena.
Deepening from 11.5m to 13mBased in Hillside, N.J., a suburb of Ne-
wark, Donjon Marine takes advantage of itsproximity to the Atlantic Ocean by working
on dredging projects for nearby river chan-
nels and straits that feed into the ocean. In
2003, Donjon Marine began working on a
Corps project to deepen the Arthur Kill River
channel, the waterway that separates New
Jersey from the New York City borough of
Staten Island. Corps engineers determined
the channel needed to be taken from a depth
of 38 feet down to 43 feet to accommodatethe new, larger ships that navigate the
waterway.
How to remove 46.000 m3of rockThe Corps survey of the project area
showed that the dredging would be so deep
that Donjon Marines crew would not only
have to remove requisite silt, but would
also need to remove 46.000 m3of rock. This
survey result is not uncommon; as channels
become deeper, layers of sand and silt often
give way to rock. The Donjon Marine project crew knew it
would load the companys new Caterpillar
385C hydraulic excavator onto the dredge
Newark Bay, but needed a tool that attached
to the excavator to break up the rock. While
excavator manufacturers make recommen-
dations on the size of attachments that are
appropriate for their machines, finding a rec-
ommended attachment that was right for the
job was key: a tool that was too small would
slow down the project and a tool that was
too heavy would place too much weight on
the front of the dredging barge and cause it
to tip. Donjon Marine turned to its long-time
equipment supplier, Hoffman Equipment of
Piscataway, N.J., for a suggestion on equip-
ment that fit the excavator and was capable
of handling the rock removal task.
The right tool for this job:
HB 7000After listening to the requirements of the
job that Donjon Marine had ahead, Hoffman
salesperson Carmen Gibilisco determined
that the Atlas Copco HB 7000, the largest
and most powerful hydraulic breaker on the
market, was suited not only to the excavator
and the demanding job, but also to under-
water breaking. Considering the challenging
task ahead, the Donjon Marine crew was
convinced this breaker had the right featuresfor the job.

A useful feature: StartSelectsystem
After the silt was cleared away, the HB
7000 started its work of breaking up the rock.
Next, the large pieces of rock were gathered
from the bottom of the channel with a
dredging bucket and deposited onto a dumpscow, a large flat-bottom ship. The scow
then carried the load of rock 35 km out to
sea for disposal. The HB 7000 offered several
features to help the dredging crew keep the
entire project running smoothly.
The HB 7000s StartSelect system was one
of the breakers features that helped make
the rock removal process efficient. With
the StartSelect system set to Auto Stop, the
HB 7000 will not function until the breakercomes up against a solid object, which helps
an operator avoid hitting areas where rock
is not present and eliminates the damaging
effects of blank firing. This feature greatly
reduces the possibility of internal damage
and increases the life of the breaker.
GPS helps operators to seedredging area
The HB 7000 also worked in conjunction
with a GPS unit and excavator cab-mounted
screen to help operators see the dredg-
ing area. The GPS unit creates a map of the
area to be dredged and allows operators to
position the breaker with precision. These
systems are examples of some of
the technologies that equip-
ment manufacturers have developed to help
crews operate their tools safely while ensur-
ing the job is done efficiently.
These new systems help operators work
more precisely in the dredging area, because
extra passes that arent needed cost time and
money, said Wright. The systems also help
us from missing any materials that need to
be dredged, which means we do a better and
more thorough job.
Up to 750 m3rockper day
While extremely
large ships that
needed extra room
to navigate or
stormy weather that
brought choppy
seas sometimes
caused the projectto slow,
Weighing 7 tons, this breaker fit the
weight specifications for the excavator and
dredging barge while offering an impact
force that could effectively break up the
rock. The HB 7000 is often found in min-
ing and rock quarry applications, but the
breaker is also available with an underwa-ter kit that makes i t suitable for underwater
breaking applications.
A life insurance for underwater jobs:the Atlas Copco underwater kit
Atlas Copcos underwater system applies
a compressed air source to the percussion
chamber of the breaker to keep a positive
displacement of air constantly coming out
of the bottom of the breaker. Without thiscompressed air, the piston would draw
water into the percussion chamber on its
upstroke when the breaker was submerged.
If the piston comes down on water, it can
pressurize the water enough to break
internal components and catastrophically
damage the breaker. Since the breaker
would be working more than 12 m under
water, this kit was essential in ensuring the
tool operated properly.
Donjon Marine project superintendent
Jim Wright knew the right breaker would be
paramount to removing the rock quickly and
efficiently. We had a large amount of rock
to get through, so we wanted the largest
and very best breaker on the market, said
Wright. Atlas Copcos breaker definitely
did the job.

the HB 7000 has helped Wright and his crew
keep the project on schedule by removing an
average of 500 m3of rock each day. When the
water is calm and channel traffic is low,
the HB 7000 enables the crew to remove
up to 750 m3of rock in one day. After
working on the channel for two
years, Wright expects to finish the
deepening project within the next
months.
Shipping industry needs
deeper channelsWright anticipates the HB
7000 will continue to be a much
utilized tool in Donjon Marines
equipment fleet. In fact, thecompany recently purchased
a second HB 7000 to prepare for
upcoming rock-breaking projects.
Donjon Marine will likely see a quick
return on investment for this purchase, as
the Corps plans to bid future contracts for
dredging the Arthur Kill River channel down
to a depth of 15 m. This continued deepening
of the channel reflects the Corps dedication
to providing larger ships access to the rivers
docks. Moreover, this trend toward deepen-
ing channels extends beyond the United
States. According to a September 2000
Corps report, container ports around
the world are deepening navigation
channels down to between 15 m and
16 m to accommodate the larger
ships that will travel international
waterways.
The shipping industrys need
for deeper channels means more
dredging contract opportunities for
companies like Donjon Marine. With
more than 40 years of experienceand tools like the HB 7000 on projects,
Donjon Marine will continue to dredge
up more business while creating safer
navigation channels to facilitate the flow of
maritime traffic in and out of the nations ports.
