THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
John 2:13-25
Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings
In next Sunday’s Gospel, (March 14) on the
Fourth Sunday of Lent- “Rejoice Sunday”,
the Gospel reading proclaims about how we
find an observation about human sinfulness.
Jesus is the light that has come into the world,
but people preferred the darkness. We wish to
keep our sins hidden, even from God. Jesus
has come into the world to reveal our sins so
that they may be forgiven. This is the Good
News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this
season of Lent and throughout our lives.
SCRIPTURE READINGS
2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23: The causes for the Israelites’ captivity in Babylon are described.
Ephesians 2:4-10: In grace we have been saved, so that we may do the work of the Lord.
John 3:14-21: Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man will be raised up so that those who believe in him will have eternal life.

A Pilgrim’s Progress…. Thank you to all who participated in the hours of prayer and the masses of our IC 40 Hours Devotion this past week and for your support of Fr Zach’s work with the men and women of the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy. Please continue to pray that our St C 40 Hours March 17th

I invite and encourage all the ladies of our Mattoon Deanery to the Council of Catholic Women mass, lunch, and discussion this Thursday March 11th at Immaculate Conception. Uniting members (all Catholic women are automatically members of the CCW) from 11 counties, our new Mattoon Deanery (slightly smaller than the state of Rhode Island) has the Faith and the talent to accomplish great things for the Kingdom of God. Please come and bring your friends!
All men, 18 and over, are invited to participate in our Lenten Men’s Conference: “THE JUST MAN” Living Freely in the Footsteps of St. Joseph, Saturday March 27th beginning with 8 AM mass at IC. Please call the parish office 217-235-0539 to sign up.
This week the priests of the diocese will have our annual 24 hour March gathering with Bishop Paprocki with prayer and presentations. Please note the change in the mass schedule at IC for Tuesday and Wednesday and keep us in your prayers.
This week I also get my 2nd “shot in the arm” as part of a continuing effort to stay healthy. Please continue your prayers for all those who are not.
Deo Vindice, fr john

St. Joseph’s Table is a wonderful Sicilian and Italian tradition that combines a love for the Father of the Holy Family, food, and outreach to the poor. It is kept with a variety of devotions and practices on March 19th the Solemnity of St. Joseph. This year St C and IC will have a “St. Joseph Table” set up near the Guardian of the Redeemer’s image in our parish churches for the donation of non-perishables to be distributed to the Moultrie County Food Pantry, the Mattoon Community Food Center and Catholic Charities. Items particularly in need are: cereal, tuna, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, canned vegetables, ramen noodles, sugar, flour, and all healthy foods, avoiding glass containers when possible. Items may be left on the table near St. Joseph by
March 19th! Thank you for your participation!

Why Cover Crucifixes and Statues During Lent?
The Roman Missal (our prescribed book for liturgical instruction) states: “in the diocese of the United States the practice of covering crosses and images through-out the church from the 5th Sunday of Lent may be observed.” Families are also encouraged to imitate this practice at home. Why? Veils alert us to the distinct time that we are in. When we walk into church we immediately notice something is different. The last two weeks of Lent (formerly known as Pas-siontide) are meant to be an immediate preparation for the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday). The veils help us to focus on the words being said at
mass and more fully enter into the striking words of
the Passion narrative. Especially if you see them
each day at church, the veils help to produce a height-
ened sense of anticipation for Easter Sunday. Their
unveiling before the Easter vigil is a metaphor of our
earthly lives. We now live in a veiled world in exile
from our true heavenly home. It is only through our
own dying and rising with Christ that the veil is lifted
and we see the beauty of eternal life.
