BACKGROUND NOTEAccording to Mahatma Gandhi every person should be providedwith bare minimum necessaries i.e. food, shelter, and clothing.Gandhi is in favour of the self-sufficient village economy wherethe villages will be the independent economic units. For attainingsmooth development of the economy, it is imperative to developall the constituents of economy and society simultaneously. Theoverall progress of the entire economy depends on the balanceddevelopment of all the regions. Self-sufficient village economy is abottom -up solution and in this context the role of institutions inthe rural sector like the village panchayat and rural multipurposeco-operative can play a vital role. This understanding ofMahatma, is not just instrumental in realizing the goals ofdevelopment but more importantly intrinsic in enjoying the samewith a content approach in a sustainable manner. His ideals oftruth as being ‘non-hypocritical’, non-violence as ‘avoiding mentallevels of violence too and not just physical violence’ andsatyagraha as ‘passive resistance with love and compassion’ areeasy to read and write but difficult to understand in their fullgravity. Entire humanity is today gripped with an unprecedentedpandemic COVID-19, stalking all over the globe, and alsoexasperated by a threat of violence in the wake of rising globaltensions and conflicts. In a scenario like this, countries are tryingto seek succor and strength and also long term solutions for theirpeople. Undeterred by all these and with a huge confidence andoptimism, which have had been the hallmark of the humanhistory, we are also celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary ofMahatma Gandhi. This being the backdrop, it is quite appropriateto highlight the significance of Mahatma Gandhi in pursuit of thelarger vision of a Sustainable future and Self-Reliant India, as healways recognised the importance of moral plurality anddedicated his life to the cause of self-reliance, non-violence, truth, swadeshi, character education and an empathetic approach tohumanity to say the least.

Even today, India is hailed globally as a country of villages due tothe sheer number of villages that we have (in the vicinity of sixand half lakh, Census of India, 2011). The five ‘I’s including intent, inclusion, investment, infrastructure, and innovation ashighlighted by the hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi during hisclarion call to make India a self-reliant economy during COVIDpandemic, though may not have a direct mention of GandhianPrinciples and Models, but is indispensable for each one of thesefive I’s  to materialize due to the sheer expanse of Gandhianthought towards the basic fabric and constituents of IndianSociety/Economy if not for anything else. The discourse onintrinsic and instrumental significance of Mahatma hence holdshigh relevance in given context of COVID and a Self-ReliantNation. In this regard, the proposed international e-conclave willhave the following objectives along with the expected learningoutcomes for disseminating the idea and ideals of MahatmaGandhi.
