RefugeesThere are up to 20 million refugees world wide and most of them are children and women

(Screaming Angie). Refugees are people who has left their home for a reason and have left their country. They have left their countries because of war, persecution, or natural disasters

“The war had started two years earlier. Salva did not understand much about it, but he knew that rebels from

the southern part of Sudan, where he and his family lived, were fighting against the government, which was

based in the north” (Park 6).

From the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, A historical fiction book. The main character Salva Dut became a refugee because of civil war

which is war between people in the countryFigure #1

Hot spots of refugees around the world (Where refugees go) are countries including Somalia,

Afghanistan, and Syria where there are 1,000,000 or more refugees

“Becoming a refugee involves saying goodbye to all that you know, like relatives and friends who you

care for most.” - Anthieng (Betty) Majak

Antieng left her home country, Sudan because of problems in the country. For 12 years she was a

refugee in Kenya (Anthieng Majak). It was hard to live in another country, refugees who enter the new country has to follow the laws of the new country, behave well

and get use to the place (Screaming Angie).

Identities Refugees continued

Non - Fiction text (Factual) • Hunger is one of the main problems in the refugee

camp, refugees living there receive food from UNCHR (Screaming Angie)

• Illegal refugees that are not in camps go to immigration detention centre, If their parents are sent to the detention centre their kids are also forced to go there (Broadhead)

• It is difficult and hard to live in a new country, they had to follow the laws and do what they forced you to do (David Sam’s Story; Screaming Angie)

!!

Fictional text (Fictional) • Travel by feet (A Long Walk to Water) • To travel across the rivers they had to either swim over

to the other side or use the materials around there to make boats (A Long Walk to Water)

• People wouldn’t want to travel with children because children would get hungry and tried easily which would slow their traveling down (A Long Walk to Water)

• As time past they become more hopeless (A Long Walk to Water)

• Lots of time is spent on migrating to a new places, Weeks, Months, or even Years (A Long Walk to Water)

Internal and external factors Refugees continued

“Life in a refugee camp is not easy for anyone” (Screaming Angie). Refugees faces lots of problems in their lives including both internal and external factors. Internal factors are feelings inside people

and external factors are things around them like natural disasters.

External Factors • Civil War, war within people in the country (A

Long Walk to Water) • Persecution (Screaming Angie) People are killed and Arrested because of religion, nationality, and law (Screaming Angie) • Droughts / Natural Disasters (Screaming

Angie; Mercy Corps Niger Fact sheet) A drought is a long period of time with no rain, In an area where there’s usually rain • Problems in their home could include: War,

Destruction, Poverty, Diseases, and Starvation (A Long Walk to Water)

• Refugee camps can be close down, and solider would forced refugees to get out (A Long Walk to Water)

• Died because of fighting and diseases (Screaming Angie)

Internal Factors • Family separated - Less possibility to find

their family members that were separated (Screaming Angie; Humans of New York)

• Hope becomes more hopeless as time past. “As long as they can laugh, feel, and have fun they will still have hope” (Screaming Angie).

• Hunger and Starvation. There are limited amount of food in refugees camps, food and basic needs are donated by the UNCHR (Screaming Angie)

• Stress and Depressed (A Long Walk to Water)

Refugees continued

What options do refugees have? There are some options for refugees provided by the UNCHR but

not always. Some options refugees have includes: being resettle in a new country which means that the UNCHR will send refugees to a new and safe country, Get move to a safer place they can live,

and to go back home; This only applies when the situation in their home country is already safe (Larribeau)

Difference between Migrants and refugees, Migrants migrate because of their choice for example for work while refugees are

forced to migrate which could be due to many reasons (Larribeau)

Persecution is due to many reasons including: • Race - Judge or persecuted due to things like different gender and

skin colour • Religion - Judge or persecuted due to different religion and believes • Nationality - Judge or persecuted because their from another

country or belong to another nation. • Part of a social group - Being part of a social group could lead to

being judge or persecuted because another group that your group is enemies with or if the group did something wrong

• Political Opinion - Giving either positive or negative political opinion could lead to being persecuted or judge because some people may not be happy with what you said or don’t agree with the statement

Where the refugee camps? Refugees camps are usually near

the country’s border. !

What are Urban refugees? Urban refugees are refugees who

live in the city

Internally Displaced Person (IDP)An internally displaced person or IDP is someone who has left their home for a reason

but is still in their country. The possible reasons they left their home includes: Persecution, War, and Natural disasters.

Why do IDPs choose to stay in their home country?

• When displaced people have to migrate they would sell everything they have to be able to afford the plane ticket or whatever transportation. Some people would need to sell things they own like their land to be able to travel to a new country. People with more family members would need more money and some won’t be able to afford money to travel to another country and would have to stay in their country / would migrate to a safer place in the country (Broadhead).

• Some people might not want to live there home, where they grew up and had many memories. If they left their properties / land any Ethical group might just take it, which they would want to protect it and would choose to say somewhere near to make sure that when it is safe they will be able to come back to their home (Broadhead).

Top ten countries with IDPs 1. Afghanistan - 631,300 People 2. Iraq - 954, 100 People 3. Sudan - 1,873,300 People 4. Somalia - 113, 300 People 5. DR Congo - 2,963,800 People 6. Colombia - 5,368,100 People 7. Syria - 6,520,800 People 8. Central African Republic - 894,400 People 9. Pakistan - 767,500 People 10.Azerbaijan - 609,000 People

Figure #3 The map shows IDPs population

around the world. There are many countries with IDPs both protected

IDPs and IDPs that are not protected which would be different for different country (Depends on

different country’s law). !

Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Continued

Droughts Droughts are caused by lated rain or no rain it a place where there are

usually rain. There are many chain events caused by droughts and could cause people to become displaced (Mercy Corps Niger Fact sheet).

1. Late rain 2. Insect damage 10 - 70 percent of the crops 3. Farmer has no crops to harvest 4. Less crops, Less food to eat 5. Food prices go higher since it is harder to grow and harvest crops 6. People would skip meals since they can’t effort food When droughts are caused people in the area are not able to grow crops which causes them to migrate to somewhere where they can live (Mercy corps Niger fact sheet). In the book A Long Walk to Water when the main character Salva Dut got separated from his family and lived when an old

lady he didn’t know much. One day they had to move out of that area because the water in the pond was gonna dry up, This shows that water is important for people to live and if it was dry people won’t be able to

live (A Long Walk to Water).

There are many reasons that causes Internally Displaced People. Natural disasters is one of the main causes of IDPs.

What are Natural Disasters? Natural disasters is an external factor. Natural disasters are disasters or events that happens naturally, it

could destroy the environment around there.

Example of different natural disasters

• Flood • Droughts • Tsunami • Volcano • Earthquake • Tornado • Hurricanes • Storm (eg. Sandstorm) • Landslide

Thailand flood 2012 In 2012 there was a major flood in Thailand

that damaged lots of buildings (People properties) and it may cause people to

become displaced. My home wasn’t effected by the flood but I was hard to travel around since there are places

around that is flooded, It was also hard to find supplies and food since the factory it

was produced at maybe flooded. The flood was not all over the country and was just in

some areas, however it caused schools and offices to close until the flood is gone.

Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Continued

Identities shown in Non - Fiction text (Factual) • Hard working and strong because they never give up even though they suffer a lot

(David Sam’s story) • IDPs are given a small amount of resources (Broadhead) • Ethical group persecuted people due to race, nationality, religion, part of a social group,

and political opinion (Human of New York HONY) • Internally displaced people live by the borders of their country, however they are not

protected by the international law (Broadhead)

External Factors • Natural disasters could damage their homes and

their belongings. It could also effect their daily lives like droughts wouldn’t allow people to continue farming (Mercy Corps Niger Fact Sheet)

• Persecution could cause family members to be arrested and persecuted due to religion, nationality, race, part of a social group, and political opinion. From one of the HONY blog post there were people coming in and calling for his father, he was scared so he ran away from his house, in the morning he came back and found his father with his arms and legs cut off (Humans of New York).

Internal Factors • Feeling worried of wanting to go home and worried

that someone may take over their belongings (Broadhead)

• Depressed of when it will be safe for them to go back home and live happily (Broadhead)

• Sadness due to family separation and maybe not being able to follow their dreams (Broadhead)

• Choice to migrate out of their country or to stay in their country (Larribeau)

Asylum SeekerAsylum seekers is people who has left their home for a reason but haven’t been given

protection by another country (Haven’t fill in documents or forms yet). Asylum seekers or Illegal migrants left there home because of reasons including persecution, war, and natural disasters

Immigration Detention Centre

Illegal migrants or Asylum are sent to the detention centre if the police or any ethical group finds out that they are living

illegally. In the detention centre they would separate men and women, younger boys would stay with their mom while teenagers would stay with their dad. If their parents are

caught in the detention centre their kids will also have to go with their parents. There are many problems in the detention centre including: Low supply of food, Don’t have the freedom to do what they want, Loneliness, No Privacy - Always people

around you, Hygiene, Separation from family - Men and Women, younger kids would be with women until a certain

age, No limit of how long you stay in there, Not much Options, Don’t know what will happen to them (Uncertain), and Kids in detention centre don’t grow up, don’t have enough nutritions

and enough exercise (Broadhead).

External and Internal factors that causes Asylum seekers are the same as refugees, the only differences between the 2 type of displaced people is that Asylum seekers haven’t given

interview and fill in documents to enter the country (Asylum seekers live illegally).

Identities of Asylum seekers are different from refugees because since they haven’t been given interview from agencies that supports displaced people they would have to live illegally. Since

those people are living illegally they would be worried cause anyone could take them to the detention centre any time and there is no limit of living in the detention centre (Broadhead).

Other types of Displaced People

• Stateless people are people that doesn’t belongs to any state law or nationality. People who live illegally (Larribeau)

• Immigrants are people who migrated and is going to stay there permanently

• Illegal immigrants are people who migrate across national borders in a way that is against the country’s law

• Economic Migrant is a person who migrate to a new country because of economic reasons (Keith Phipps)

• Environmental Migrant are people who migrate because of both gradual environmental change and extreme environmental events

Displaced People around the world

Observations from map • Smaller countries like Syria and Eritrea usually has

more displaced people living there than bigger country like United States or China

• Most countries with displaced people are in Africa • Countries with lots of displaced people are usually

countries that has civil wars or problems in their countries.

!Hot spots for different types of displaced people

• Internally Displaced People (IDPs) - Sudan, Colombia, Syria and the Dep. Rep. of the Congo

• Stateless people - Thailand, Myanmar, and Côte D’ Ivoire • Asylum seekers - Germany • Refugees - Somalia, Afghanistan, and Syria !

Questions I have • Would a displaced person choose to migrate somewhere

near, somewhere safe, or somewhere that would accept them?

• Do displaced people have a choice to choose where they migrate to?

the population of displaced people around the world. We used different sources to help find information to add to the map

Displaced People through performance Tableaux and Freeze frames

Tableaux and freeze-frames are motionless pictures taken that we acted out. Tableaux and freeze-frames are actually different, Tableaux is a picture with one scene while freeze frames has

more than one scene that is connect and is in order of time.

What concepts do your presentations connect to? My presentation connects to the concepts for this unit including:Change, Genre, Identity, Interpretation and Choice. The tableaux and freeze-frame shows the concepts change and identity through facial emotions for example refugees who has been hoping to go home for a long time as time past they become more hopeless. It shows change because as time gone by their lives, emotions, and hope change. The presentation I created (This one) connects to most of the concepts because since the start of the unit we have been looking at different concepts in different classes and tasks for example Genre and identity, in english we read historical fiction and memoirs to find out identities of displaced people shown in factual and fictional texts. !How have you shown your understanding of the Statement of Inquiry? The statement of inquiry is External and internal influences change the personal identity of displaced people. I have shown my understanding on the statement of inquiry because in my tableaux and my freeze-frame I showed the change of personal identity through facial emotions as time past identity change. External and Internal influences that change personal identity is shown throughout the presentation is shown in the identity change slide and the external and internal factors slide for different type of displaced people, I have shown my understanding by explaining what I understand about each topic like identifies, external factors and internal factors displaced people faced in their lives. !What connections have you made between disciplines (Subjects)? In Humanities we watched videos about refugees using the information we collected from the video like feelings, emotions, their perspectives, and how they overcome their problems. We also wrote about the perspective of how some of the refugees feel, which made us have a better understanding of how people feel being refugees and about their perspective. During the mapping activity we learnt about the hotspots of each type of displaced people which could be applied in the actual presentation. In English we read historical fiction novels and memoir to find out about refugees. We also looked into real / factual events that really happened and about what effect / change the character’s life / identity. We could use and apply all the information we learnt in different class and create a tableaux of how a refugee or displaced person feel and problems they faced which has to be overcome.

PA Tableaux and Freeze frames

Freeze-frame

The freeze-frame I created show displaced people traveling. The problem I focussed on starvation and hunger which is one of the problem displaced people faces. The first frame shows people traveling as a group, The next picture shows people lining up for water / food, and the third frame shows that they are still hungry and there are

not enough food given to them.

Tableaux

This tableaux shows a displaced person feeling sad, lonely, and desperate. I created this tableaux to show internal emotions of displaced people through facial expression. I choose the background to be a sandy

with nothing in else other than sand, leaves, and rocks to represent the desperateness of displaced people.
