Why QKD; Why QuSAT
3
QKD is Quantum‐Safe today
QKD adds a layer of security (not exclusive!)
QKD from space removes the distance limitation of QKD
Good add‐on to our new tool chest!

Phase A: Two Objectives
6
1 - Technical
To design, develop and deliver a Quantum Key Distribution Service from space via a LEO satellite
Cost effective
Reliable
Secure
2 - Commercial
To develop a commercial business, offering the next generation data encryption capabilities
Strategic partnerships

QuSAT driving ideas
7
• Keep the space segment simple
• Low cost
• Low cost User Terminals
ID Quantique & ALTYN © Copyright 2017
• A Quantum Channel to exchange qubits between the satellite and ground user terminals, for a sufficient duration (3-5 min)
• A classical communication channel to extract secret keys from the qubits
• A safe key storage, management and distribution system
QuSAT Functional Requirements

• A Laser Communication Terminal (LCT), with an added
Quantum Channel Data rate: 1 Gbit/s
Diameter of the telescope: 10-15 cm
Pointing accuracy: <10 rad
• An Acquisition, Pointing & Tracking System (APT)
• A QKD Management System & a Hardware Security Module
(HSM)
• A Radio Communication Channel
QuSAT Technical Requirements
9

A new protocol: Quantum-Enhanced PLC
11
Assumptions:
• Eve cannot intercept the beam
without being discovered
• Eve only limited by QM
Advantages:
• Simpler systems at both ends
• More power
