Unit 5 Tactile Textiles
“I find knitting to be a powerful medium for self-expression and communication because of the cultural preconceptions surrounding it.
My work subverts these preconceptions and disrupts the notion of the medium being passive and benign.” Freddie Robbins

IWB CRITERIA In your Investigation Work Book, complete the following tasks:
1. Focus your investigation on three different Artists (contemporary or in history) who have created Textile Art. Try and look at artists that work with different Textile processes/techniques. Find as much factual information as you can (about the artists, images of the artworks, themes that influence them, materials/ techniques used etc.) Written information should be in your own words. Write 2 -3 pages on each artist. Your entries should include both facts you uncovered and your feelings and thoughts – what ideas do they give you? How can you use (or reject) the information you gather and why?
2. Document all your experiments produced using textile techniques with a camera. Research the knowledge needed to make the textile samples well. What terms are associated with Textiles? What techniques? Research artists famous for using different Textile techniques. Aim for 10 pages of experiments.
3. Produce an in depth investigation of one or more artworks relating to Textile Art. Consider the works visual, technical, historical, aesthetic and intellectual values. The more investigate, probe and explore the more you will begin to develop your own individual approach to Textile Art.
4. Plan an exhibition on Textile Art. Select three other artists and their work- plan how to display their work and discuss why they were chosen. Then write up a catalogue for the exhibition which features a carefully written entry about what these artists have in common as well as the specific ways in which their work impacts upon Textile Art. This should be 3 pages long.
• Ensure you have used the correct terminology and specialist vocabulary particularly in relation to photography, composition and collage when writing as part of your research, investigation and experimentation.
• Use a wide range of resources such as books, journals, periodicals, art galleries, internet sources as part of your research. All sources should be cited properly using the MLA format. Use Easybib to help you correctly cite sources.
• Your ideas should be presented effectively and creatively. Thoughtful observation and discrimination, both written and visual, should be evident.
• Record your studio work as it progresses, documenting processes and techniques encountered throughout your studio work. Always have a camera to hand to record your studio activity.
