Jacome headed to World CupKINDERHOOK — It’s offi-cial, Mariela Jacome is head-ing to Canada in June tocompete at the highest levelin women’s soccer — theWorld Cup.

On Friday morning, theFederacion Ecuatoriana deFutbol in Ecuador named theSt. John’s University fresh-man — and Ichabod CraneHigh School graduate — tothe final roster for the FIFAWomen’s World Cup team.

Jacome, a Kinderhooknative, is eligible to play forthe team as her late fatherwas born in the SouthAmerican nation.

“Eight months before myfather passed from cancer hetold me he wanted me to playat the highest level I could,”Jacome said in a release fromSt. John’s. “Now I have theopportunity to honor thatdream and I’m extremelygrateful for that.”

As a freshman at St.John’s this past season,Jacome took the field in all20 games and picked up anassist in her collegiate debutagainst St. Francis College.

“I’m absolutely ecstaticfor Mariela,” Red Stormcoach Ian Stone said in arelease. “She is one of thehardest working players Ihave ever coached. This is atremendous honor forMariela, her family, her

friends — everyone who hashelped her on her way, andfor St. John’s women’s soc-cer. I was already reallyexcited for the FIFAWomen’s World Cup inCanada; now to have one ofour own student-athletesplaying in it is remarkable.”

Jacome had no intentionof even trying out for theWorld Cup team just a fewmonths ago, but a chance tripto visit relatives in Ecuadorled her to impressing coachesenough to earn an officialtryout.

That led to her beingnamed to the preliminaryroster of 27 athletes thatcompeted in friendly match-es over the past two months.From there, the roster waswhittled down to 23 covetedspots on the final rosterwhich Jacome is now a partof.

Ecuador makes its WorldCup debut on June 8 inVancouver, where the teamfaces Cameroon at BC PlaceStadium. The four-teamgroup also includesSwitzerland and Japan — thedefending champion.

Silk named toNFCA All-Region

LOUISVILLE — The SageCollege softball team had aschool-record two athletesnamed to the 2015 NationalFastpitch Coaches AssociationAll-Northeast Region Teamthis week.

According to a releasefrom the school, Sage’s rookiesecond baseman Alexa Silk, ofFreehold, and senior catcherKristen Beikirch, ofBrockport, were named to theAll-Region Team as Silkearned Second Team acclaimand Beikirch earned a spot onthe Third Team.

Silk, who belted her team-leading seventh home run ofthe season during the ECACTournament was a First TeamSkyline Conference pick aswell this year and finishedwith a team-best .414 averagewith 12 doubles, a triple andseven home runs to go withher 24 RBIs.

The Greenville HighSchool graduate had a blister-ing .730 slugging percentagewith a .449 on-base percent-age. Her 2015 home run per-formance ranks No. 2 all-timein single-season home runs atSage. She was 9 for 10 onstolen base attempts and had a.927 fielding percentage, help-ing to turn three double playsin her first collegiate cam-paign.

Silk ranks in a number ofSage single-season categoriesas she was No. 9 in hits (46),

No. 6 in doubles (12), No. 8 inruns scored (31), No. 17 inRBI’s (24), No. 16 in battingaverage (.414) and No. 19 inat-bats (111).

Sage went 18-17 on theyear, having participated inboth the Skyline Conferenceand ECAC Division III tour-naments for the fourth straightseason.

• Brantley, Schultz find theirgroove in minors

Hudson High School grad-uate Justin Brantley has beenon a roll since taking his firstloss of the season in lateFebruary.

Pitching for the LynchburgHillcats — the Single AAdvanced affiliate of theCleveland Indians — Brantleyhasn’t given up a run in hispast five outings while throw-ing in a relief role.

For the season, Brantley(0-1) has tossed 21 1-3innings over 10 games and has19 strikeouts, six walks, fiveearned runs, 14 hits and a 2.11ERA.

Phippen gave up just one walkin a dominating performance on themound.

Offensively, Hayley Goold went

2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs,Jen Van Alphen went 3 for 5 withtwo triples and two RBIs and AlyFunk went 2 for 4 with a double, atriple and an RBI. Phippen, LexieLill and Roma Mazzariello addedtwo hits apiece.

“We came out a little flat, butfinally picked it up later in thegame,” Nytransky said. “The batswoke up in the fifth and there wasno stopping us after that. We had alot of girls get multiple hits todayand continue their success at theplate.”

Mikayla Huff took the loss on

the mound for Lansingburgh, giv-ing up three runs on three hits andfive walks in 3 1-3 innings pitched.

“It was senior day and all fourseniors lit it up,” Nytranksy stated,noting seniors include Van Alphen,Goold, Mazzariello and Funk.“Now we bring this momentuminto sectionals and hopefully wecan go far.”

The Lady Riders (15-3, 13-1Colonial) find out their seeding inthe postseason tournament onMonday.
