PHYS 228 HW #1 Due Thursday 1/9/2014

HW should be turned in by the end of class on the due date (or placed inmy mailbox by 12:30am). Solutions will be posted shortly after the class. Aselection of the problems will be graded. It is fine to work on problems withother students, but you should then write up your own solutions.

This week there are only problems from Boas (3rd. edition). As noted below, some you should do “by hand”. By this I mean you should write out theexpressions, say, for the Fourier coefficients in terms of integrals. You can thendo the integrals in whatever way you want, although I recommend doing thesimple ones by hand. For the other problems (where I don’t specify “by hand”)you can do them either by hand or using a computer mathematics program. Ifyou do the latter (in which case you’ll only need to enter one or two commands),please either attach your output (e.g. printout of Mathematica notebook) orwrite the computer command you used to obtain the result as well as the result.Examples of how to do Fourier series and transforms using Mathematica aregiven in a notebook posted on the “daily coverage” web page.
