Product Usage Substrate Application Drying Time Coverage How To CleanClearfi x A solvent-based polymer solution for use as an adhesive
on clear plastic parts without the risk of the ‘frosting’ effect sometimes seen using traditional glues and for making small windows or translucent areas of 3mm or less.
Common plastics used to manufacture model kits including polystyrene and ABS.
A cocktail stick is usually the most practical means of application. Run a small drop of Clearfi x around the edge of the window then draw across the opening to produce a thin membrane.
Overnight. N.A. Excess product should be wiped awayusing a damp cloth. Product is permanent once dry.
Decalfi x A water-based solution for softening decals and securing them into position.
Common plastics used to manufacture model kits including polystyrene and ABS. Decals are usually applied onto painted surfaces. Care should be taken to avoid ‘silvering’ over matt paints.
Brush on to decals or immerse them in Decalfi x for approx. 45 seconds or until softened. Slide off using a brush and dab dry with tissue paper.
20-30 minutes. Do not try to force dry decals as they may crease or shrivel.
N.A. Excess product should be wiped away using a damp cloth.
Maskol A rubber solution that can be applied to surfaces to prevent them being painted. When the paint has dried the Maskol can be simply peeled off.
Common plastics used to manufacture model kits including polystyrene and ABS and a wide variety of other applications including glass.
Brush only. Apply to surface, allow to dry and paint over. When paint is dry peel off the Maskol.
15-20 minutes. N.A. Peel off when painting is fi nished. Excess product should be wiped away using a damp cloth.
Brushes Sable hair or pony hair brushes that come in a wide variety of sizes according to whether larger areas or fi ne detail are to be painted. Brushes can also be cut to a specifi c profi le using fi ne scissors if required.
A wide variety including virtually any modelling or artist’s material including common plastics, canvas, paper, cardboard and many others.
To suit circumstances and modeller. N.A. N.A. Acrylic paints: clean using cold water. Enamel or oil-based paints: clean Using Humbrol Enamel Thinners.
Airbrush A pressurised spray gun that enables spraying of a variety of paints and inks for many art, craft, graphic design and DIY usages. Airbrush and Aerosol Power Pack are purchased separately.
According to the type of paint or ink being used. Paints will generally require thinning before being airbrushed. It is advisable to do test areas to ensure the right paint consistency and fl ow of paint through the airbrush.

useful hints and tipsGluing
• It can be useful to do a ‘dry run’ – fi tting the parts together without glue to ensure you get it right when it comes to applying your glue.
• Never apply too much glue to your model as this can cause bubbles of cement to be squeezed out from bonded surfaces.
• Application is easier when using a cocktail stick or toothpick to apply glue.
• When glue has been applied the pieces can be held together to ensure optimum bonding. Masking tape, rubber bands or string can all be useful. A clothes peg is excellent for clamping wing halves and other fl at items together.
• Clear parts need to be held with suction or a clean hand and the glue applied sparingly with a cocktail stick or toothpick. Tweezers are useful for putting these into place.
• If there are gaps between the pieces that have been glued they can be fi lled with Humbrol Model Filler. When this has dried hard it can be sanded to the contour of the model with a light grade of sandpaper.
Decals
• Cut the decals out very carefully, keeping as near to the edge of the design as possible.
• Immerse in Decalfi x for about 45 seconds or until softened.
• Slide the decal off its backing sheet and into position on the model using the tip of a paint brush as this reduces the chance of damage to the decal.
• Once in position gently dab the decal with a piece of tissue paper to absorb any excess moisture.
Painting and Varnishing
• Parts are best painted before being glued together. Always scrape any paint from the surfaces to be glued to ensure a good bond - glue’s effectiveness is much reduced on a painted surface.
• Always stir the paint to ensure a uniform mix throughout the container.
• Always apply paint sparingly on important detail so as not to obscure it, or thin the paint down to apply.
• When painting camoufl age it is helpful to mark out the areas to be painted beforehand with a soft pencil.
• When applying several coats of paint always make sure that the previous coats have thoroughly dried, or fi lm ‘wrinkling’ can occur.
• When painting a large area using a brush it is better to use a larger brush to eliminate any brush strokes.
• Metallics cannot be over-coated; they are designed as a topcoat product only.
• Occasionally deposits of white matting agent can be seen when using Matt or Satin varnish. This can be easily rectifi ed by applying a coat of gloss varnish which will dissolve the matting agent. A coat of Matt or Satin varnish can then be re-applied.
• After using your tinlet of paint always clean around the neck of the container before putting the lid back on. This will give a better seal between lid and tin.
• Allow at least 6 hours between coats - 24 hours is preferable.
• When using aerosols it is better to apply several light ‘mist’ coats than one heavy coat.
Airbrushing
• Airbrushes vary in specifi cation, so it’s useful to do some test spraying on spare plastic or cardboard to get the right application before spraying your model. Humbrol Enamel needs to be thinned for airbrushing: 1-2 parts paint to 1 part Enamel Thinners is usual. Remember, the thinner the paint the more coats you will have to apply.
• Keep the paint in the pot uniform at all times when spraying by constantly stirring. This will ensure a consistent fi nish.
• Always spray parallel to the surface being sprayed and don’t spray too close - heavy deposits will cause runs and sags.
• Clean your airbrush immediately after use to prevent clogging by fl ushing through with Humbrol Enamel Thinners.
• If the spray becomes weak when using an aerosol power pack it is because the can is starting to chill. Stop spraying and allow the can to warm up to room temperature, or use two cans so you can easily switch between them for effi ciency.
These are some useful things to bear in mind to ensure you get the best results with Humbrol
