Head Coach Steve SertichSteve Sertich enters his fifth season as head coach of the BSU women’s hockey program. At the end of the 2009-10 regular season, Sertich was honored as the 2010 WCHA Coach of the Year as the team soared to new heights never-before-seen at Bemidji State. Finishing tied for fifth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a 12-19-7 overall record (9-12-7-3 WCHA), the team claimed its first-ever playoff

victory. The team eventually won its playoff series and made the debut trip to the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF in Minneapolis, before bowing out after losing to the eventual National Champions Minnesota Duluth.

In the spring on 2010, Seritch was inducted into the Minnesota High School Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame. The honor, which is bestowed by the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association, is given to coaches that have outstanding contributions to the sport of hockey in the state of Minnesota.

Under his tutelage, the BSU women’s hockey team has posted its most conference wins in a single season, with nine in both 2009-10 and 2006-07. Sertich has also coached two Olympians while at Bemidji State, Nina Ziegenhals who played for Team Germany in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and Zuzana Tomickova who played for Team Slovakia in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver

During summer 2008, Sertich served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select team that played in the annual three-game Women’s Under-22 Series with Canada, which took place from Aug. 20-23.

Sertich was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1973-75, and played on a team which trained in Bemidji. He was also a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic team, which finished fifth at the Innsbruck, Austria games. The U.S. team recorded wins over Finland and Poland en route to a 2-3 finish in Group A.

He also played two years in the German Professional League, spending the 1974-75 season as captain for Fussen and two seasons from 1978-80 playing for Nurnburg.

Sertich is a 1974 graduate of Colorado College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and humanities. He received a master’s degree in elementary education from Minnesota State in 1999.

against ninth-ranked Ohio State.• The Sioux used a trio of unassisted goals to edge OSU in an overtime thriller. Monique Lamoureux-Kolls netted a goal at 2:19 of the first period while Jocelyne Lamoureux sniped a wrist shot off the joint of the crossbar and post for a 2-1 lead at 9:14 of the second frame.• The Buckeyes looked as if they would at least gain a tie in the game with under 30 seconds remaining and control of the puck in the Sioux zone, but Wiebe was able to block a shot from the point, beat the defender back to the puck and on a breakaway wristed a shot past Steffes with only 14 seconds remaining.• The Sioux lost their leading scorers in the Lamoureux twins for Saturday’s game (including next weekend’s series against Bemidji State), but they barely skipped a beat as the game shaped up to look very similar to the night before. • UND outshot the Buckeyes 32-19 and through two periods the Buckeyes only had seven even-strength shots on goal, but after Allison Parizek scored the lone goal of the first period OSU responded with the next two goals to lead late in the third period. Jordan Slavin joined the play as an extra skater as the Sioux pulled goaltender Stephanie Ney with 1:25 left on the clock. Slavin picked the high glove-side corner of the net just seven seconds after stepping on the ice for the game-tying goal. In OT the Sioux struggled to get anything going as the clock ran out. The Buckeyes would gain the extra point in the standings with a 2-0 shootout win.• Friday’s overtime goal by Wiebe broke a 13-game goal drought for UND’s leading point scorer from last season.• Sioux goaltenders Jorid Dagfinrud and Stephanie Ney continue to share time in net. Dagfinrud improved to 3-3-0 while Ney remained unbeaten in the tie with a new mark of 3-0-1.• UND’s all-time series record against the Beavers is tied 15-15-2 going 5-4-1 in its last 10 meetings. Both Dagfinrud and Ney have a all-time record of one win and one loss against BSU with Ney also having one tie.

Last time out• The BSU women’s hockey team ended an 11-year winless streak to Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 5 after the Beavers shutout the then-No. 3 Bulldogs 1-0.• Netting two goals over the weekend, Emily Erickson scored one of the biggest goals in BSU history netting the game winner in Friday’s match to end an 11-year winless streak to Minnesota Duluth. After being held scoreless for the majority of the game, Erickson found the back of the net on the power-play with under seven minutes left to play in the game. In Saturday’s just 18 seconds after UMD opened the scoring, Erickson netted the lone BSU goal in response to tie the game back up. For the weekend she finished with a +1 plus/minus rating with 11 shots on goal and blocking one on defense.• Zuzana Tomcikova recorded the most saves of any goalie in WCHA play over the past weekend, turning away 72 shots. In Friday’s contest she made 38 saves to help Bemidji State snap an 11-year winless streak against Minnesota Duluth as the Beavers picked up their first win in style blanking the Bulldogs 1-0. The shutout was her 11th of her career and third of the season. On the following night Tomcikova made 34 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Bulldogs. She also set the school record for longest shutout sequence of 149:30 which started on Oct. 29 in the third period to Saturday’s game the second period.• Tomcikova’s work was made easier as the BSU defensive corps blocked 47 shots over the weekend, including 13 by Marlee Wheelhouse and 10 by Montana Vichorek.• The BSU special teams went 6-8 on the penalty kill over the weekend and was perfect (3-3) in Friday’s win.

Slovakian Sensation• Bratislava, Slovakia native Zuzana Tomcikova has made a total of 238 saves so far this season. In eight games she has recorded a .930 save percentage.• Making a season-hihg 38 saves, Tomcikova picked up her 11th-career shutout on Nov. 5 as the Beavers defeated then-No.3 Minnesota Duluth 1-0.• For her efforts in the Oct. 1 game against Wayne State University, she was honored as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 6. Winning her eighth-career weekly honor,
