DOugLAS COuNTy FAIR AND RODEO – Have you ever
attended the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo? This year the Fair is
August 5–8 in Castle Rock (only 20 minutes away). County fairs are
a tradition across the country and you may just want to visit and see what the Fair is all about,.
To find out more visit www.douglascountyfairandrodeo.com and celebrate our western
lifestyle and heritage right here in Douglas County, Colorado. If you have ever thought about
getting involved in 4-H, attending the Fair is a great first step.
CNN MoNey MagaziNe NAMES HIgHLANDS RANCH AS 12TH BEST PLACE TO LIVE
– Highlands Ranch made the top 100 list of best places to live in CNN Money Magazine,
coming in ranked at number 12. A variety of amenities helped Highlands Ranch place this high,
including HRCA recreation centers, the Backcountry Wilderness Area, schools, parks, and
trails. We can all take great pride in our hometown.
A LANDFILL IN OuR BACkyARD? – The HRCA Board of Directors is opposing a proposed
landfill on the southern border of the Backcountry Wilderness Area. The company proposing
the landfill does not currently have an active application with Douglas County government,
but it appears it is on the threshold of making an application for review and approval of a
landfill. How can you get involved? Sign up for Meanwhile Back at the Ranch e-blasts at www.
HRCAonline.org. If an application is filed for this proposed landfill, the HRCA will help get you
the proper contact information, meeting dates, addresses, etc. in order to effectively be heard
on this important issue. you can find the Board of Directors opposition letter regarding the
landfill on our home page under Community News and when more information becomes
available or if a Call to Action is generated, you will be able to find all of that information at
www.HRCAonline.org.
SOMETHINg FOR EVERyONE – I am very often asked what sets Highlands Ranch apart
from other communities. The HRCA Vision is, “Building a lifestyle that you want to live”. We
are very proud of the fact that even if you don’t use the HRCA recreation centers, you receive
a great value for your assessment dollar. From the farmer’s market, free summer concert
series; fireworks, parade, rodeo, Oktoberfest, or 90 other events, there is something for just
about everyone. It’s all right here.
THANk yOu RANCHERS! – Thanks to all of you who celebrated Independence Day with
the HRCA. The 4th of July celebration is the biggest one-day event our staff puts on for you;
5k Run, Bike and Pet Parade, Parade, Festival, and of course the Fireworks are brought to
you by the HRCA. I also want to thank the parade entrants and businesses that support our
community, and of course, a special thank you to all of the volunteers and staff that make the
event so successful. Without our event sponsors who help pay for the activities, we wouldn’t
be able to make it all happen. We hope you enjoyed the day.
Have a great rest of the summer.

BOARD CORnERBy Scott Lemmon, Treasurer
We live in one of the top areas in the uS as evidenced by the
recent announcement by Money Magazine naming Highlands
Ranch number 12 on their 2010 list of Best Places to Live. We
have great schools, libraries, four first-class recreation centers,
8,200 areas of Backcountry Wilderness Area, over 100 community events per year,
affordable housing, safe neighborhoods with a low crime rate, employment opportunities,
and an overall high-quality of life. All these great attributes do not happen by accident. It
is our over-arching pride in ownership which drives us to make Highlands Ranch such a
great place to live.
Each of us strives to keep our home in good repair and to continuously improve our
property. The summer and autumn months are popular for house painting, fence staining,
landscaping, and home improvements. Before starting any project, please reference the
Residential Improvement and Site Maintenance guidelines (RIgs). The RIgs provide the
residential standards for the community. Following the RIgs protects our real estate values
and assures that our community is a desirable place to live.
To reference the RIgs and for more information, please go to HRCAonline.org > Home
Owners > Residential Improve guide or call the Covenant Compliance & Assistance
Department at 303-471-8821.
Once you are ready to begin your project, consider buying your home improvement
supplies from stores within Highlands Ranch. Many cities impose local sales tax in addition
to the Colorado 2.9% state sales tax. Without the overhead of local city tax, the sales tax
rate in Highlands Ranch is 5.1%. Surrounding cities have rates up to 7.7%. On purchases
totaling $1,000, you can save up to $26 by just shopping Highlands Ranch.
Find a contractor for your project in the new HRCA yellow pages for contractors and
services located in our area. Check them out at www.HRCAonline.org/yellowpages.
By working together and following our community guidelines, we can continue to keep
Highlands Ranch a top place to live.
Save time and money by signing up for automatic payment of HRCA assessments. To
download the Direct Debit Authorization form, please go to HRCAonline.org > Home
Owners > Assessments > Direct Debit.
vOLUnTEER OPEnInGSThe HRCA is looking for all interested volunteers to apply for appointments to the Tribunal
committee. For more information and to download the appropriate forms and application
go to HRCAonline.org > general Information > HRCA Leadership > Committees.

ENRIcH YOuR cHILd’S PREScHOOL OR PRE-K ExPERIENcEThis fall, the HRCA begins the Enrichment program for children
ages three to six years. With flexible enrollment options of five
full days, three full days, or two full days, children will attend their
regular Preschool or Pre-k class and the rest of their day will be
supplemented with reading time, swim time, gardening, pottery,
music, art, and science activities. Our teachers will take the skills
they are learning in the classroom and apply it to the hands-on
activities later in the day. We will have visits from the Denver
Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and 4H to
round out these fun activities. If
you are in need of full-day care,
even just a few days a week,
consider this option for your family.
Enrichment is only $24/$26 per
day in addition to the Preschool
monthly fee. A morning and
afternoon snack are included. For
more information, please call 303-471-8881.
FRIENdSHIP SKILLSDoes your child struggle with
making friends? Consider enrolling
them in our Friendship Skills
series. These popular classes help
children learn self esteem, social
dynamics, increasing attention and coping and calming skills.
Taught by a state licensed school psychologist, these classes will
teach your kids the social basics and they will come out of these
classes with some new friends too! For more information, please
call 303-471-8818.
Preparing your child for the real world can often be difficult.
Teaching your children the basic skills of social education helps them
develop the essentials of making an introduction, demonstrating
common courtesy and respect, table etiquette, and basic manners.
These skill sets will serve as the foundation for success in school,
interviewing for jobs down the road, and admissions to college.
These foundational learning objectives are important to develop
early and they begin in Cotillion. The dance education features
traditional, contemporary, and group dances such as the fox
trot, waltz, and swing. There is a
one-night program available for
3rd graders that serves as a basic
introduction. A five-week program
for 4th–5th graders and 6th –8th
graders begins in November. For
more information, please see the fall
Activity guide or call 303-471-8880. To register, please visit www.

THIRd ANNuAL FALL cOTILLION
This fall we are introducing some new Tumbling classes. Wee
Little Tumblers gives moms and babies an opportunity to come
together to perform healthy activities while meeting new friends.
This class is great for getting out of the house, meeting other
new moms, and being led in fun activities that help stretch little
ones and get them ready for crawling or walking. In our active
alphabet class, children ages two-and-a half to four years learn
as they play! Moving their bodies into shapes of the alphabet to
form letters helps children be able to draw better connections
to shapes. Songs and movement makes learning fun! For more
information, please call 303-471-8818.
