How Automatic Transmission Works In Vehicle?
Cars with automatic transmission are now very popular as they are very easy to operate no matter whether you are in short or
long trip.
Automatic transmissions contain mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and computer controls etc.
which work together perfectly until any problem occurs.
Transmission is a very complex component which multitasks to operate the vehicle properly.
How automatic transmission works?
The engine sends power through the transmission to drive the wheels.
The transmission is the power-train which converts the engine's force to a controlled source of energy.
Transmission acts as a mediator to convert the high power of engine into torque and transfers it to axles to rotate the
wheel.
Engine produces a variable source of energy which is sometimes high or low, but it is the work of transmission who stabilizes it and converts it to a regular amount to help the wheels move.
The transmission keeps the RPM of engine and wheels in constant and optimal rate which gives the stability of control to
vehicle.
In automatic transmission, the transmission fluid provides necessary pressure to activate clutches and bands to
determine what gear ratio a vehicle should be on road.
There are 2 types of automatic transmission found in vehicles :-
Rear wheel drive cars :- In these vehicles, the transmission is mounted to
the back of the engine which transfers the energy to wheels through
driveshaft.
Front wheel drive cars :- These vehicles have their transmission combined with the transaxle which gives
power to the 2 front wheels .
The power flow starts from engine to torque converter then to transmission and finally reaches to front wheels just after
splitting.
There are automatic transmissions which also used in 4 wheel drives but front wheel and rear wheel drives are
commonly used cars on road.
The main purpose of transmission is to maximize the efficiency of engine to gain lower fuel consumption with maximum torque.
Transmission keeps the vehicle performance stable and optimal which also balances the wheels on road.
If your vehicle's transmission is faulty then your vehicle won't drive or function properly.
Components of automatic transmission :- :- Torque converters & multi plate clutches
:- Multi plate brakes and band brakes :- Ravigneaux Planetary gear sets
:- Large and small sun gears :- Planet Carriers and Planets
:- Ring gears :- High Gear ratios
Automatic transmission is more easier to use and widely available rather than manual transmission.
The parts of automatic transmission is easier to find and gives a better handling of vehicle in any road types.
There are some common issues which can ruin your transmission like :-
:- Running on low transmission fluid
:- Unscheduled servicing :- Use of wrong transmission fluid
:- Ignoring the first sign of transmission issues etc.
