Ron Popove never tires of Hot Nite in the City.
Even after 18 years as part of the organizing committee and
several years at the helm as chairman of the not-for-profit society, he says his love of cars and making the public happy keeps him coming back for more.
This year’s Hot Nite will look a lot like past years, with roughly 350 vehicles from as far as Winnipeg displayed proudly on Victoria Street. The well-loved poker run returns again this year, as does an array of street entertainment designed to please the whole family.
“I enjoy doing it, it’s nice. We’ve got a committee that makes 25,000 people hap-py, there is a sense of accomplishment there,” he said.
Popove has nothing but praise for the many people who work on Hot Nite, many of them year after year. Some have been with the event since the beginning. On the committee is Troylana Manse, Peter Stack, Sue Adams, Ian McAndrew, Rob Strand, Ric and Barb Hoffman, Peter Mahaits, Nicky Cherry, Kim Stanley, Nicholas Adams, Larry and Cheryl Dyck,
Gretta Popove, Jennifer Johnson, Don Burgess, Meghan Popove, Dennis Smith, Chris Rioux, Brian Amy, Bob and Lynne Neste, Bob Chambers, Allan Dodds and Ken Finnigan.
“Every one there is important, believe me. Everyone has a job, everyone is effi-cient at what they do. Everybody there does a great job,” said Popove. “I have a good crew. Hot Nite is only as good as the crew. The people around me are the ones who bring it together.”
Popove said Hot Nite’s continuing finan-cial support of Kamloops groups and orga-nizations, including TRU, the RIH Founda-tion and the Kamloops Foodbank, also make the long organizing hours worth-while.
“It’s a true community event,” he said.Popove said he won’t pick a favourite ve-
hicle, believing all the entries are unique and worthwhile and deserving of attention. All car lovers have their own niche inter-ests, he added. Some like street rods while others, like him, prefer station wagons.
“I have a ’66 Nova station wagon going in this year,” he said cheerfully. “You won’t see many people driving one of those.”

#30, as I call the car, is a Legend series
purpose-built racing car. The body is a scaled fibreglass
1940 Ford coupe. The chassis is made from steel tube and power comes from a Yamaha 1250-cc motorcycle engine.
The car is 10.5 feet long, five feet wide
and four feet high. It will hit a top speed of 160 km/h and
covers a one-quarter mile in 14.5 seconds at 155 km/h. I use the car at the Knox Moun-tain hill climb in Kelowna every year and have a best time of two minutes, 18 seconds to climb the 2.2 mile hill.

After several years of restora-tion by Don Watkins of
Rayleigh, this beautiful 1970 Oldsmobile 442 was purchased
this spring by Anthony Muzzillo and Mike Schreiner.
The full restoration and painting was completed by Dave Pawley of Dave’s Paint and Restorations. In its first showing, the 442 was entered in the Penticton Car Show in June where it placed second in the stock 1970 category.
This classic convertible muscle car was produced in Lansing, Mich. on May 12, 1970. It is painted in original Rallye Red with an ivory interior and special appear-
ance option hood stripping. Under the hood is the famous Olds 455 cubic-inch, 365 hp Rockets V8 and a 400 turbo automatic three-speed transmission.
Anthony and Mike are proud to have this classic muscle car fully restored and on dis-play at Hot Nite this year.
The 1970 Olds 442 was the official pace of the 1970 Indy 500 and was originally priced between $3,310 and $3,565 US de-pending on the options. The 442 model started in 1964 as a GTO competitor and was named 442 for its original four-speed transmission, four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust.

S8 THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2012The Daily News, Kamloops
It’s 2003, and I am in the insur-ance office registering my new
project, a 1952 half-ton Thames Panel. I purchased three vehicles
for one, two complete and a parts car. I sold one as a restoration project and started to research my next move.
After much planning, I started my project by saving the parts I needed. My project panel still had the lettering from Texada Dairy on it, but as most all of the interior was wood. All I was using was the shell of the body. I started by taking the body off the frame and replacing all the wood with one-inch by one-inch tubing. I then built the frame with a Mustang 2 front suspen-sion and an eight-inch rear end. I added a 2.3 litre Ford motor and a C4 transmission.
Then the work started as I had big plans
for the body. First, widen the doors five inches, then add opera windows. I then filled the top with a ’79 Ford van roof and built steel door posts to replace the wood ones.
Then I built a steel floor and a lift tailgate to replace the original aluminum and wood barn doors. It took hours and hours to straighten all the body parts and build the front and back nerf bars. Then it was primed and painted in Ford Bright Silver and ’78 Ford Royal Purple. I have a good friend who spent hours installing all the necessary wiring. Kamloops Upholstery stitched up the interior.
Now all that is left to do is to enjoy the ride. It has been a lot of fun and hard work, but worth it in the end.

This 1968 Camaro convertible was originally sold in Calgary
in 1968. We’re not sure where it spent most of its life but was

We purchased it three years ago in Van-couver and enjoy it on sunny days. It has the original 327 with a two-speed Power-glide. It has been used in wedding pictures and touring the Okanagan vineyards. It is a fun car to drive. — Mike Funk

They say good things come to those who wait! I waited
40 years to get my first Mustang and I sure am glad that it has been
everything I waited for. I modified it to give it my personal touch,
like the Lamborghini door kit and the carbon fibre hood, to make it a bit different from all the other awesome Mustangs out there. I tweaked the V-6 engine with a chip and Borla exhaust, as well as lowered it 2.5 inches and added a body kit. The final touch was a set of 18-inch rims with a touch of carbon fibre to match the hood and the
racing spoiler on the back. I am in the process of getting the stereo
done so people can hear me before the see me! I have an Alpine head unit with four door speakers, a 12-inch and two 10-inch kicker subs I am trying to juggle, or should I say jiggle?
Now I am focused on the next one, a 1966 GT 350 Fastback, the year I was born. RIP Carrol Shelby!
I hope to see you all at Hot Nite this year. Come out and see your next project or dream car — there is lots to look at!

Les Little’s 1954 Chevy has been an almost lifelong
labour of love. Les had a ’54 Chev in high school. That one was a
two-door sedan with a manual three-speed transmission. Les flipped the gear shift lever to the left side of the steering column, calling it his “lover’s shifter.” That way, he could drive and shift while keeping his arm around his girl. After marrying said girl, that ’54 was crushed beneath the neigh-bour’s D3 cat.
Les and Karen ended up in Kamloops, where Les went looking for another ’54. In 1975, spotting this ’54 Bel Air two-door hard top at the Syd Smith repair shop, Les bought it off an elderly woman who had been in a car accident.
The story goes, that she hit a police car, and they took her licence away. He paid $250 for the car, and drove it home as the damage was only to the front passenger fender.
Les turns out to be the second owner of this car. It was bought new in Prince George in 1954. He managed to find and buy three other ’54 Chevys to use for parts. One was reconditioned and sold for $900. As far as he knows, that ’54 is still on the road somewhere.
Soon after buying the old Chevy, the motor was switched to a V8, a four-speed four-on-the floor transmission was in-stalled, and it was painted Les’ favourite colour, blue.
Les and Karen toured B.C., Washington and the Oregon coast pulling a tent trailer. Later, a 16-foot Travelair trailer replaced the tent trailer. Quite a sight, the old Chevy and the travel trailer. Lots of people look, wave and stop to talk.
The old Chevy went with Les and Karen as they moved around the province for work — Kitimat, Port Alice, Campbell River, Chetwynd and finally to Mackenzie.
In 1998, Les built a garage and had a place for an off-the-frame, total rebuild. This ended up being a 10-year project — new 350 V8 Chevy block, headers, 600 Hol-ley carb, ’56 Chevy rear end (3.55 to 1 ra-

Les started going to car shows in 2007 while the car was still a “work in progress.” He won Best Project at the 2008 Quesnel Show & Shine. Most people viewing the work in progress were amazed to see metal, bare metal, under the primer.
Every year a little bit more was done, and people commented on his progress.
The 2009 Father’s Day Show & Shine in Prince George was where Les proudly showed off his blue car . . . finally! In 2010, he took third in the Modified Street class in Hixon.
Les tries to hit all the Show and Shines in the north — Dawson Creek, Tumbler Ridge, Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Hixon, Williams Lake and Prince George. During this time, Les also started and organized the Mackenzie Show & Shine, which takes place the third Saturday in July every year.
In 2011, Les was pleased and surprised to win one of the Ten Favourite awards in the Dawson Creek Show & Shine.
The year 2009, saw a trip to the Ladner Car Show and Quilt Walk, satisfying Karen’s interests. In 2011, Les went back to Ladner, and then to Kamloops Hot Nite in the City.
In 2012, the car was back in the garage for a power steering upgrade. No more strong-arm steering! The Mustang II kit was ordered through Memory Lane Custom and Classic Auto Parts in Quesnel. It included chrome steering column, steer-ing wheel and power steering pump. Shiny! Also a rack and pinion, 11-inch GM disc brakes and QA1 coil over shocks in-stalled on a Jim Meyers bolt-in suspension.
Les and Karen enjoy meeting like mind-ed people, swapping stories and informa-tion, and being part of the car-show family.

I bought this car new in 2008 after my son bought one and
showed it to me. He was not hap-py when I bought the SS model
and his was the basic LT model. I had a realistic flame painted on the
hood and fenders, and got some engine mods done so it is now 300-plus hp.
Next came the Lambo doors which bring
a lot of looks. I usually just open the doors normally,
however, when I go anywhere and people are looking, I automatically go vertical. It’s an attention grabber.
My wife and I love driving around be-cause it gets attention and is fun to drive and very responsive.

After a very successful car show season last year, Barney was
put into storage for the winter. On Feb. 1, it was a blue-blazer day in Abbotsford, and out came Barney
for the first drive of the season. We were a couple blocks from home
when smoke began rolling out from be-neath the dashboard. Within a minute we had to bail from the car. The fire depart-ment was quick to respond and we were fortunate that only the interior was damaged. The dollar value of the interior damage was substantial but with private insurance, they did not write Barney off. The restoration company and I searched
North America for parts. I am extremely happy with the result and Barney is ready for the 2012 show season.

This 1969 Hayes, manufac-tured in Canada, was origi-

I bought the truck used in 1979, recondi-tioned it and used it for hauling logs until 1990. It sat in my shop partially disassem-bled until 2007. At this time, I started to re-store it. Everything on the truck is original except for the updated steering and 18-speed transmission. These were altered
to make the truck more driver friendly.I usually show my Hayes at four Big Rig
Show & Shines in B.C. each summer, and this year, Port Alberni hosted a special cele-bration for all Hayes owners and friends on the July 1 weekend to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Hayes trucks.
My favourite event is Kamloops’ Hot Nite in the City as the atmosphere is upbeat and the people are friendly and interested in older trucks. — Huntley Smith, Lytton

This Ranchero was bought in 2003 in Edmonton for $800.
It was in rough shape, but with a lot of time, sweat and saved pen-
nies is now driving the roads once again. It has the original paint color, Saddle
Bronze, with wood grain flames powered by a 351 Cleveland CJ, C6 tranny with fac-tory high-stall torque converter and locker rear end.
Yes there were still a few muscle cars made in the mid ’70s.
Our Ranchero drives like a car but is clas-sified as a truck. We enjoy car shows and just going for drives.
The greatest pleasure in driving our Ran-chero is the friendly waves and smiles peo-ple give us as we drive down the highways and byways.
