Before You Begin

1. Copy,foldandpreassembleasetofEarthDaybookpagesforeachstudent.

2.Stapleeachbooktogether.

Introduction

ReadEarth Day—Hooray!byStuartJ.Murphy.Askchildrentohelpyouthinkofwaystoprotectourplanetandkeepithealthy.Writetheirconservationideasonchartpaper.

Procedure1. TellstudentsthattheyaregoingtocreatetheirownEarthDaybooks!GiveeachstudentasetofEarthDay

bookpagesandprovidemarkers.

2.Askstudentstoreadalongsilentlyasyoureadaloudthesentenceoneachpage.Asyouread,leaveoutthewordthatbelongsineachblank.Challengestudentstounscrambletheword(inparentheses)thatfitsineachsentenceandwriteitintheblank.

3.Invitestudentstocolorinthepicturesanddecoratethebookcovers!Encouragethemtoaddabooktitleandtheirnametothefrontcover.

Guided Practice

1. InvitestudentstomakeEarthDaypostersforyourschool!

2.Havestudentsworkingroupsofthreeorfour,andprovideeachgroupwithmarkersandposterboard.

3.EncouragethegroupstouseideasfromtheirEarthDaybooksorfromEarth Day—Hooray!tocreatepicturesandslogansfortheirposters.(Youcanalsohangthechartpaperlistofconservationideasnearbyforinspiration.)

4.Helpstudentshangthepostersaroundschool(inhallways,thecafeteria,etc.)asaschool-wideremindertoprotectourplanet.
