the teams even including a 750m and 1550m.
Prior to the commencement of the race a minute silence was held for Peter Curtis Snr, who
unfortunately passed away late last year. His contribution to the club will never be forgotten.
The race started out to Bronx cheers as 800m heavyweight Rhys Lias made a special
appearance to begin the day off 5secs starting well ahead of other teams who under the handicap
system would have to slowing claw back their lead, at the first changeover Teleah Terrors team where
still in a commanding position with young Jett Patullo not losing any ground against any other team,
back in the field however all other teams where rallying.
At the second changeover Teleah Hayes team had Zahra Hayes increase on the frightful lead’,
running a strong leg to hand over to Gary Mahon, Kyle Hilson had put his team the Parkers Inspectors
into a strong position making up vital seconds on all but 2 teams, as too had Matt Barkla showing his
improvement this year but taking his team the William Wallace’s into 5th place from last overall.
The contest really heated up at the third changeover as most teams have converged within 2
minutes of everyone else besides new leaders Nicks Ninjas with Maiya Pearce and Thomas McArthur
giving team Captain Nick Wallace every chance to be victorious, Hawken’s Hero’s also where in the
places before the 3000m legs.
It was the beginning of the end at the final changeover, with the race tightening up between 5
main teams, Kerrieanne Hocking racing for Nicks Ninjas held a strong advantage, Oscar Fox had
taken President Leigh Browell within striking distance, the Wallace twins Ben and Alex where sitting
third, Peters Pyschos final runners where in with a chance as Greg Hilson handed over to Yazmin
Hayes, Damian Pearce and Son Eli Pearce had a small chance as they changed runners if everything
went smoothly, but the real threat was Adam Parker taking over from Sharon Wallace in third last,
and Teleah Hayes taking over from Gary Mahon in Eighth place. Lara Pearce and Daniel Plowright
rounded out the field.
The last 750m saw 4 teams in with a chance, Nicks Ninjas held the lead late before coming
through for 4th, Bowell’s Big Guns took the lead with 500m to go but could only hold on for 2nd
place, Teleah’s Terrors came storming home to claim the 3rd place, but Adam Parker’s Parkers
Inspectors where victorious coming from 7th place to take line honours in a consistent performance
by all team mates. Adam Parker was joined in victory by Sharon Wallace, Kyle Hilson Hannah Cotter

Peter Curtis Snr was a dedicated South Bendigo man ever since his eldest daughter Shayleen
joined the club in the late 90’s.
The “1 Eyed” Collingwood supporter even boasted a South Bendigo Tattoo visible for all to see.
The regular limit marker always provided good incentive to chase. In 2011 he lost the vision in his
only eye, making the effort to continue even more inspiring. For 5 years he headed out with his
trusty Bundi Basher leading the way.
In 2007 he began his role as Canteen Manager, a role that he loved and held when he passed. He
always made sure the Kettle was hot, and offered anyone and everyone any hot drink he could
possibly supply.
His role as canteen manager, Committee member and overall club helper was such that in 2010 he
was awarded Best Club Contributor.
Peter ran his last 1500m race on the 23rd of April 2016 at Miller’s Flat, a race that also featured Jess
and Peter Jnr, the two youngest of his three children. Even after this race he continued to be a
presence at the club until his sudden passing on Christmas morning 2016.
The Inaugural Peter Curtis Snr Memorial race was held at Atlas Rd, Peter’s “home ground”, on
what would have been his 62nd Birthday.
Peter was a much loved member of South Bendigo Athletic Club, and is missed by all that had the
honour of meeting him.
Peter Curtis Jnr.
The Champions Supa IGA South Bendigo Athletic Club held its final club run of the season
on Saturday, 26 August, the day kicked off with the reduced long distance over 5kms, young Zachary
Tickell took out the race smashing his estimated time by almost 1 minute, a slightly tighter finish for
the minor places saw Greg Hilson hold on for 2nd ahead of backmarker and fastest time winner Daniel
Plowright, Lara Pearce did enough to edge out Donna Bowe for fastest female.
In the 3km race, Maiya Pearce took out the season finale for her maiden season victory surging
far ahead of the field with limit marker Gary Mahon her closest rival almost 1 min behind, Logan
Tickell continued his excellent form in third with a huge club PB. Logan and Sasha Pearce took out
the fastest time honours.
In the underage race Kate Wilson held on in a close finish for her first victory this season,
ahead of rival Chelsea Tickell, invitation runner Nate Oxlade was third over the line, while club
athlete Kai Pearce was third for South Bendigo, Kai and Chelsea took the fastest time awards home.
The 1500m race today was the inaugural Peter Curtis Snr memorial run, a sealed handicap
race to honour long time club member who was a committee member and canteen manager when he
passed, the winners will be announced next week at the club presentations, first over the line went to
Leigh Browell, with minor places going to Jett Patullo and Peter Curtis Jnr. Fastest time awards went
to Megan Wilson and Leigh Browell.

2017 WINNER -
DONNA TICKELL MEMORIAL 1500 METRES Club Member Donna Tickell was killed whilst riding her bike home from school, near Newstead.
This event was set up by the club to remember a youngster who was a willing helper and
competitor with the club during the Cross Country season.
DONNA LEE TICKELL
13.9.75 TO 10-05-90
Tragically killed at age 14 years.
A much loved, and loving family person, who enjoyed life to the fullest. An unselfish girl who wished the best for everyone else. Her zest for life is well remembered by those who had the fortune to have known Donna. Her sporting attitude, was a lesson many could well adopt. No complaints, or regrets, just get on with the job. Her “cheeky” ( tom boyish ) manner, oozing personality, was an infectious one, which left one feeling good about yourself and proud to be in her company.
Not the fastest athlete around at the time, but an ambassador for her peers, a credit to
herself and her family. Every so often a person of outstanding credential comes along. Donna WAS one of those people. A great mate for her brother Lucas who wears a picture of his late sister tattooed proudly on his chest. Their ‘scraps’ left many mystified. Donna was a willing, energetic worker for the Club, helping in any way she could. A terrific club mate, who was always on the sidelines, to offer encouragement and praise to fellow athletes.

when looking like rain.
To all timekeepers and starters and everyone who assisted lining up runners at the start and
finish giving out place numbers.
Caitlyn and Peter Curtis Jnr. for all the hard work in handicapping.
President Leigh Browell in organising prizes for Invitation and other major events as well as
all the chocolates for our '' smiley face” lucky winners.
Amanda and Marg Worthington, Caitlyn for writing ribbons and tickets each week.
To all our sponsors and raffle donors.
Without them we would not have had a successful season.
To everyone who helped in canteen, selling raffle tickets, turn around guys, entry takers,
soup makers and everyone else to make this club a success it is.
To those who took those photos of us all in pain as we run along, and also to Peter for all his
paper reports in which this book is made a lot easier to put together.
And lastly to everyone who turned up each week to have a run, whether finishing first, last
or in between, hope your season was enjoyable and hope to see you all again next year.
