employees of the North Harrison,
South Harrison, Ridgeway, Cainsville,
Tri-County, Gilman City, and Spickard
School Districts as well as area law
enforcement and emergency response
teams. The goal of the event was to
train principles and techniques of re-
sponse to an emergency. The partici-
pants then tested what had been taught
in a realistic simulation.
The North Harrison Safety Committee
members are building principals Mike
Schmidli and Jan Polley, staff members
Brandon Craig, Gayla Pottorff, and
Aaron Long, school board members
Kirk Emig and Jason Gibson, commu-
nity member Tommy Gilliland, and
Harrison County Sheriff Josh Eckerson.
“Emergency Procedures for North Harri-
son R-III School District” pamphlets are
readily available near the entrance of
each classroom and office through out
the facility. The flip chart holds step-by-
step instructions for staff and students in
the event of a situation such as an earth-
quake, tornado, fire, intruder and multi-
ple other events.
This is just one of the many steps the
North Harrison administration takes to
keep the students and staff safe each day.
The “Safety Committee” meets periodi-
cally to discuss issues and tour the facility
looking for concerns that need to be
addressed.
Grand River Mutual is currently in the
process of installing a new multi-
function notification system through
out the facility. This includes an
upgrade to the intercom paging
system and the addition of speakers
in the hallways, cafeteria, gymna-
sium, multi-purpose room, Early
Childhood Center and the elemen-
tary playground.
Midwest Digital Systems will install
video surveillance cameras through

French News
Junior High Academic Team by Nick Bears
Both the French 1 and French II
classes are competing in the Uni-
versity of Central Missouri’s 6th
Annual Foreign Language Film
Festival. Each class was responsi-
ble for choosing and writing a
script, fathering and making the
props, and taping and editing the
film. The students then added
music, created a title and credit
page and added subtitles. Both
classes chose to create a movie in
the Mystery/Suspense category.
The movies will be evaluated on a
variety of criteria and will include
originality of screenplay, use of
foreign language for the level,
overall creative and skillful use of
film techniques, such as the use of
camera, setting, tone, acting, edit-
ing, music, and overall effect.
On the day of the contest, all
accepted entries will be shown
on the University of
Central Missouri campus. The
students have been invited to
the showing and will listen to
a presentation by a profes-
sional filmmaker. The ex-
perience has already been
quite interesting! The
French students are realizing
that a lot of effort and time
go into each filmmaking pro-
ject! Who knows? This may
be the beginning of an illustri-
ous career as a movie star or
director for our French stu-

nity to answer the first and then second
bonus. The rebounding team may answer
if the first team is incorrect. Only the
team captain answers in the bonus round
or he can say, “I defer to ____”, then they
may answer it.
The Junior High Team finished the season
with a record of 8 wins and only 2 losses.
The Junior High Academic Team consists of
Nick Bears, Bobby Hutton, Chase Hukill, Sidney
Carlson, Bobbie Moore, and Hannah Whitmire.
The coach is Mrs. Percell.
Some of the topics of the questions are sports,
history, geography, government, algebra, science,
economics, industrial arts, and many other
topics.
Four people from our team play at one
time. There are four buzzers and once
you buzz in you have to wait until you are
called on to answer the question. The
questions in quarters 1 and 3 are toss-
ups and worth ten points each. Quarter 2
and 4 questions are toss-ups followed by
two bonus questions also worth ten
points each. The team that answers the
toss-up correctly then has first opportu-
Did you know that all of the elementary students, K through
sixth grade, can now speak French? Check it out! The French
II students travel to the elementary building each Tuesday and
Thursday to present basic lessons in French. They teach about
French customs and culture, including Christmas in France, plus
French vocabulary about various topics. The students have
studied colors, numbers, family members, and food. Coming up
next month is body parts! It is exciting to see how quickly the
elementary students are learning to speak French.
Pictured at right, Melissa Ward plays a learning game with
elementary students.
The French I and II students are
looking forward to their cultural
field trip to Kansas City and
Parkville. The first stop will be a
French meal at Café des Amis.
They will choose from croquet
monsieur, a seafood crepe or
quiche Lorraine for their main
course. They may also taste
escargot compliments of restau-
rant owner, Guillaume.
Following lunch they will view
the many works of art at the
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
and the Kemper Museum of
Contemporary Art.

STAR Event winners were Cameron
Hamaker earning a SILVER rating with an
entry in “Life Event Planning”. Kelly
Briggs and Emily Briggs competed in
“Focus on Children” and earned a SILVER
rating. Breann Bennett earned GOLD
rating and advances to state in “Teach
and Train”. The state conference will be
April 7-9 in Columbia. Breann will com-
pete in the state level STAR Events at
that conference. Her entry in the cate-
gory “Teach and Train” covers her experience of teaching fire safety to
kindergarten and first grade students. She created and presented an
informational power point and video, did a “Stop, Drop, and Roll”
activity and provided a coloring page. Taylor Washburn is currently
preparing a workshop presentation. This will conclude her service as a
State FCCLA Officer.
The Regional officers for 2013-14
were inducted March 6 during a
ceremony at North Andrew High
School. Kelly Briggs will be Vice
President Recreational Leader
while Emily Briggs will be Vice
President Special Events.
Taylor Washburn had a very busy school year representing the
FCCLA as a State Officer. She attended the fall conference at Tan-
Tar-A and Cluster Meeting in Oklahoma City. Recently she partici-
pated in Legislative Shadowing spending the day with State Represen-
tative Casey Guernsey at the capital in Jefferson City.
Well, there are lots of things I could say but to start off, there
were only five people that went (four being students, 1 being the
teacher). We went to Northwest Missouri State University. It
was a blast. The four students were Sidney Carlson, Heather
Musser, Kelly Briggs, and Hannah Whitmire.
Sidney and Hannah played a flute duet and got a III rating. (“I” is
the best rating you can get). Kelly got a II rating on her vocal solo.
Heather got a III rating on her vocal and a II rating on her trumpet
solo. Hannah got a I rating on a flute solo.
After finding out our ratings we went to Subway to eat and had a
blast. Then we headed home feeling happy about how much cour-
age it took to actually do it and also happy about our ratings!

FFA—40 Members Strong by Samantha Rinehart
The FFA members have been very busy in starting off the new year.
We started off by working on record books after returning from break.
We had to close out all of our books for the year 2012. A new thing
for us this year was entering our record book information on the com-
puters. After we finished record books some chapter members
worked on getting proficiency applications read to send to Area 2 com-
petition. Eighteen members submitted 23 Proficiency Award apps to be
judged against those from 26 other schools. Those placing first in Area
2 advance to state competition and will be announced on the stage at
state convention. Those placing first through third in Area 2 will be
recognized at Area 2 Awards Night in Chillicothe on April 19.
The FFA chapter got their t-shirts and we handed them out to the staff
again. The FFA members were scheduled to dress up for FFA Week
during February 25-March 1 however, due to the bad weather we were
only able to dress up on Monday and Friday. Monday we wore our
new FFA t-shirts and Friday was Blue and Gold Day. Donuts and coffee
were available at local business on Wednesday, March 6 for Commu-
nity Appreciation Day.
Contest season (Career Development Events) is also here. District
Vo-Ag Contest is April 2 and 3 at NWMSU. If the teams do well here
they will advance to State FFA Convention in Columbia April 18 and
19. Hopefully all the teams will do well and go to state!
Cooper Sadowsky recently earned a spot in the summer Agri-Business
Academy which is a week of touring Missouri enterprises.

Student Council Events by Alyssa Wynne
Christmas Ball pictures began
around 6pm so everyone came
in with their friends and dates
ready to have a fun night! All
the girls had beautiful dresses.
After pictures coronation be-
gan. Crowned queen was
Clementine Melkonian and
named King was Riley Rucker.
Everyone was excited that the
dance had finally started. We
began dancing and having fun.
Student Council had amazing
decorations, a few Christmas
trees, a fireplace, lights, snow-
flakes, and more; everything
you could think of because the
theme was “Christmas Vaca-
tion”. We danced, talked, and
had a great time until it was
over and then everyone went
home!

The Homecoming theme was “Party
at the Rock”. The cheerleaders
planned fun activities for the pep as-
sembly. The basketball teams played
North Mercer. After coronation the
dance began. As you walked in you
were handed a glow stick. The lights
were off, the music was loud and glow
sticks lit up the room. Everyone was
talking, dancing, singing, laughing, and
having fun! After a few hours the last
slow song played and the dance was
over. Student Council cleaned up and
everyone went home. I would like to
thank Eddie Ury for being our DJ; he
played great music and made our
dance fun!
“Spring Fling” was cancelled due to weather conditions and will be held later this year. The Student Council is planning
a fun evening of games and music for 7-12th grade students and their guests.

Cheerleaders End Season at State Tournament by Lena Smith
Lady Shamrocks Round Ball Wrap by Abbe Gibson
The North Harrison cheerleaders did not end
their season with the basket all teams. The
cheerleaders were selected to present a half-
time performance in Mizzou Arena in Columbia
during the state basketball tournament. They
danced on March 8 at the half-time of the 2A
Girl’s Third Place game. The cheerleaders
would like to thank the community for their
support and encouragement. They are looking
forward to next year. Try-our practice will be
April 29th and 30th with try-outs on May 1.
Action and team photos from the state tourna-
ment can be viewed and ordered at

Melkonian. Clem is our foreign exchange
student from France and had never played
before. It was fun helping her learn the
game and getting to be a part of one of her
new opportunities here. Clem says that
her favorite memory from playing basket-
ball was senior night and many others, too
many to count. We are already excited to
see what next year will bring for the Lady
Shamrocks and Coach Aaron Long.
This year our girls’ basketball team went 16-10
on the season. We went 6-3 in conference,
trying for third with Gilman City. Our first
tournament of the year was HDC Tournament
held at Mercer where we finished with Consola-
tion. After coming back from Christmas break
we participated in the South Harrison Invita-
tional Tournament where we again received
Consolation. At the end of January we were in
the Gilman City Tournament and ended up get-ting 4th place. The district basketball tourna-
ment this year was held at Worth County
High School. We beat Stanberry in the
first round and then moved on to the
semi-final game where we ended up losing
to Jefferson. Our team consisted of three
freshmen, Haley Craig, Sara Campbell, and
Rebecca Musser; three sophomores,
Samantha Rinehart, Cooper Sadowsky,
and Addison Leeper; four juniors, Nicole
Clawson, Bailey Perkins, and Abbe Gib-son; and our one senior, Clementine

Shamrocks on the Hardwood by Garren Gibson
The North Harrison Shamrocks finished the 2012-
13 campaign with another winning season. They
finished with a 15-11 record. The Shamrocks had a
2nd place finish in the Gilman City Tournament and
a 3rd place finish in the Conference Tournament
under the direction of Coach Ryan Purdun.
This year’s team consisted of two seniors, Garren
Gibson and Tucker Bowen; three juniors, Luke
Stanley, Gaige Blake, and Tanner Studevant; seven
sophomores, Reed Hallock, Jordan Hurt, Drew
Parkhurst, Blake McBroom, Blake Emig, Damion
Sturdevant, and Colton Castleberry.
North Harrison is excited to have so many
players returning next year with so much
game experience. Final words from senior
Tucker Bowen, “I would like to thank the
community and the school for giving me so
many opportunities through the athletic
department and supporting my teammates
and me through all of our seasonal play.”
The North Harrison basketball players are
lucky to have a community that supports
them the way they do. Junior Luke Stanley
says, “No matter where we are playing we
will always have a big crowd there to sup-
port us.”
Senior Garren Gibson say’s, “I would like to
thank everyone for their support through
out my four years of basketball. Thanks to
all of the teammates I have had for all the
good times, and to Coach Long for all of his
words of encouragement.” Even though this
season is over, the boys are anxious to pre-
