Dade Battlefield Historic State Park
Step back in time to the 1800s.Children will get hands-on experience in historical living arts from soap making to cow milking. History will come alive as we educate campers in fun and memorable ways about Florida life in the 1800s.
DAY ONEIntroduction to Dade BattlefieldMeet and interact with living history characters of the 1800s. We will explore the history of Dade Battlefield Historic State Park in an interactive and fun way.
DAY TWOPioneer and Indian Toys, Games and MusicMake several pioneer toys, such as Corn Cob Darter, Rag Dolls, Tick-Tack-Toe and others. Play with both Pioneer and Seminole Indian toys and games. Learn old-time dances and play with musical instruments of the 1800s.
DAY THREEFood and Milk in Pioneer FloridaLearn cow milking, animal care, and how to make butter and ice cream. We’ll cook on an open hearth and explore wild foods and their preparation.There’ll be popcorn over a fire, cider making and garden activities.
DAY FOURHome and School DayLearn to make soap, candles, brooms and how to make and use native dyes. You can try your skill at fiber arts, then we’ll end the day with a one-room schoolhouse session and story-telling.
DAY FIVEOutdoor CraftsLearn soap carving, how to use a two-man saw, rope making and how to make palmetto scrub brushes. There will be a program for parents in the afternoon with kids showcasing what they have done during the week.
