A survey of cafes and restaurants in Orewa earlier this year indicates that, by and large, business owners are feeling slightly more confident about the year ahead. The hospitality businesses that participated in the survey, undertaken by Destination Orewa Beach (DOB), said that the beach, the weather and the community spirit on the Coast were among the area’s biggest drawcards.Opinion was divided on the value of big box retail – some thought Orewa needed it, while others were glad that the shopping precinct was preserving its boutique style shopping experience.Parking was identified as one of the main impediments for the local industry.DOB operations manager Hellen Wilkens says parking is consistently raised as an issue and the area did lack sufficient parking.“But, we are better off than centres such as Browns Bay and Milford, where the parking restrictions are a lot stricter,” she said.According to DOB figures, there are 16 cafes (defined as those who don’t open for dinner), 24 restaurants/bars and 11 takeaway outlets in Orewa.Hellen says DOB research shows that

Glimmer of confidence in hospitality sector

a few hospitality business owners think Orewa is over saturated with cafes and restaurants, and that their businesses suffer due to the ‘hospitality-heavy’ town make-up.“But the majority of hospitality businesses believe that competition is healthy and the diverse range of genres creates enough variety and selection to successfully meet the customer demand, and still maintain a healthy financial return.”She says a vibrant and varied hospitality area in any town centre actually makes visitors want to stop and, therefore, attracts custom into the town.

“A flow-on effect is that these customers then venture further a field to wander the shops and other businesses.”Opinions were also canvassed from customers. Their comments highlighted a desire for an even wider range of restaurant styles and, in particular, Italian, steak and family restaurants. Hellen says this has been a consistent finding in the last three surveys.Nearly 40 per cent of respondents dined out on the Coast almost weekly and around 66 percent were in the 36 to 65 years age bracket.

It seems that when Coasties decide to go out for coffee, they are mostly creatures of habit. In a very unscientific survey of local latte drinking habits, we found that there is strong café loyalty. But this is on the proviso that the establishment can deliver consistently good coffee, has friendly staff and the prices aren’t unreasonable. Here’s a sample of the views of some of the people we spoke to:

Café customers identify what keeps them loyal

Surveyor Don Eagleson says convenience and price guide his choice of café. “I’m not a coffee connoisseur so if they put the price of a cup up from $3.90 to $4.50, I’d give it away.”

Café owner Trish Middleton says she looks for food that is healthy and “yummy”. “Being in the business, I guess I am pretty particular about where I go. A good vibe, where staff are friendly

Vince Lysaght, of Red Beach, has only recently returned to NZ from the Gold Coast. He says the café that can consistently serve a good coffee, has friendly staff and isn’t over-priced will always get his vote. “The coffee has to have flavour, not be burnt and be a good temperature.”

is important, and it’s good if they cater for kids. There’s a lot of choice in Orewa, but sometimes I struggle to get a good coffee.”

Colleagues Petra Hewitt (left) and Christine Rose say good coffee and friendly and efficient staff are essential, and a nice setting is a bonus. Neither has found one particular favourite café yet.

Philippa Jones of Orewa could almost be described as a local coffee expert. “I’m fascinated by the coffee culture and the ritual around coffee. I’ve been to all the cafes here and I think we are lucky to have the choice we do. I’ve been going to one particular café for years because it

Orewa College students Nea Brink (left) and Jessica Salmond are ‘newbies’ to the café scene, but they like food places where the menu is clearly displayed, as well as the prices. “We like to go where we get value for money.”

Hugh Mawdsley, a visitor from Leigh, has a favourite café in Orewa which he always visits when he is on the Coast. “The outdoor seating creates a nice atmosphere and sometimes there is live entertainment. The food and coffee are good, and the prices are reasonable.”

always has good coffee and the people behind the counter are friendly. As a loyal customer, they know what I like so I know I am going to get what I want.”

Coffee surveyA survey by Canstar Blue last March shows that 52 percent of Kiwis will go out of their way for a good cup of coffee, and that a quarter of us consider coffee to be ‘breakfast’. Twenty-nine percent of those surveyed said that they drink more coffee than they should.
