Shade was considered the key to creating an attractive
outdoor landscape that Hewlett Packards employees
would actually use and enjoy. SWA focused on intro-
ducing landscape that would both provide luxuriant
shade and thrive despite the harsh soil and weather.
For the vast majority of the site, we sought not to con-
vert the sites natural grassland, but to re-establish it
wherever possible and to add a rich oak woodland. To
that end, we maintained a permeable ground plan by
providing localized and individual watering, as well as
a subdrain system to remove any excess water caused
by inherent soil permeability problems.
