Many adults have had the virtues of drinkingenough water extolled on them since child-hood. Though recommendations as to howmuch water a person should drink each dayhave fluctuated over the years, it's still safe tosay that drinking a significant amount ofwater every day is essential for your health.Water keeps the body healthy in a number of
ways. But the body loses water in a number ofways as well, each of which is part of normalhuman function. For instance, a body loseswater when a person breathes, sweats, uri-nates or has a bowel movement. The bodymust replace this lost fluid in order to stayhealthy and avoid dehydration. In addition to fending off dehydration, water
helps the body flush out wastes and maintaina healthy body temperature while reducingthe risk of developing kidney stones orbecoming constipated. According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, water also helps lubricate and cushion jointsand protects the spinal cord and other sensi-tive tissues. The body needs water every day, but there
are certain instances when the body will like-ly need more water than usual. If you spendample time in especially hot climates, your
body will need more water, just as it mightduring periods of physical activity. In addition, your body will need more water when suffer-ing from certain ailments or conditions, including fever, diarrhea or vomiting.Though many people feel drinking caffeinat-
ed beverages, including coffee and sodas, dehydrate the body, experts say moderate caf-feine consumption won't dehydrate the body.A 2000 study published in the Journal of theAmerican College of Nutrition found thathealthy people who consume moderateamounts of caffeine don't lose more fluid thanthose people who abstain from caffeine.Overconsumption of caffeinated beveragesmight prove problematic, but moderate con-sumption can provide the body with the fluidsit needs without causing harm. It's best to consult a physician if you suspect
you aren't getting enough fluids, but there arealso some indicators men and women cannotice on their own. One such indicator is thecolor of your urine, which will be clear or paleyellow if your body is getting enough fluids.Urine that is dark yellow indicates the bodyneeds more water. Constipation or hard bowelmovements may also be the result of a bodythat isn't getting enough fluids.
Many people find they don't drink enoughwater by accident. One way to combat that isto bring a bottle of water with you whereveryou go. Another way is to drink waterthroughout the day at your office, which alsogives you an opportunity to get up and stretchyour legs over the course of the day. If youfind water especially bland, add a slice oflemon or lime to give it more flavor.Drinking a sufficient amount of water each
day helps the body function properly and fightoff a host of ailments.

REGIONAL HEALTHCARE DIRECTORY JULY, 201218
Studies report that about 1 in 3 Ameri-cans, or around 65 million of us, suffersfrom some form of high blood pressure(also called hypertension.)
Since high blood pressure is one of thechief precursors of heart attack and stroke, the medical profession is paying more at-tention than ever to even moderately ele-vated blood pressure.
However, one of the problems with highblood pressure is that in most cases, doc-tors can’t point to a direct cause, andtherefore give no “magic bullet” to cure it.
You can, however, have your bloodpressure checked regularly to help man-age conditions like diabetes and high cho-lesterol, which along with high blood pres-sure vastly increase your risk of heart at-tack, stroke and kidney failure.
A variety of drugs can be taken to helpcontrol high blood pressure, unless theproblem is severe, most doctors will ini-tially recommend lifestyle changes – dietand exercise – to see if you can controlyour blood pressure on your own – andwith the cost of medication these days, it’swell worth taking on and meeting the chal-lenge.
Obesity can, of course, exacerbate theeffects of high blood pressure, and inmany cases even a loss of ten percent ofyour body weight can have some positiveeffect on your blood pressure readings. Ifyou are overweight and have high bloodpressure, losing weight is of course thenumber one priority and of course second to that is exercise.
Daily exercise can not only help loweryour blood pressure but help strengthenyour heart and circulatory system, as wellas help you rid your body of excess saltand fluids.
If you are attempting to lower yourblood pressure through lifestyle changesalone, remember to set up regular doctorsappointments to monitor your progress, and if possible keep a journal of your dietand exercise program, so the doctor cansee what you’ve been eating and doingand make recommendations for increas-ing the effectiveness of your program.
As part of losing weight, there are alsocertain things in your diet that can con-tribute to the negative effects of high bloodpressure.
Perhaps the most well known of these issalt, and blood pressure patients haveoften been put on low salt or no salt diets. If you have high blood pressure, even ifyou’re not a salt-a-holic, it’s a good ideato reduce your salt intake as much as pos-sible.
This is less difficult than you might think;if you follow the theory that basically whatyou’re looking for when you salt your foodis an increase in flavor.
So try substituting low salt productsmade up of herbs and spices like Mrs.Dash for salt, as well as reducing the num-ber of salty snacks you consume.
Also, if you’re the cook in the family, never salt food while cooking – even thewater for pasta – but let people add theirown salt if they want it.
You’ll be surprised at how much salt con-sumption this simple method cuts out.
Another blood pressure killer is choles-terol – in general the “bad” kind thatcomes from saturated fats, red meats, eggyolks, butter and high fat dairy products, etc. Not only are these things high in calo-ries, but also are high in the LDL or “bad”cholesterol that can collect on the walls ofthe arteries, restricting blood flow andleading to potential heart attack or stroke.
By contrast, HDL cholesterol – the kindof cholesterol found in certain fish oils, etc.– is credited with helping carry away acertain amount of “bad” cholesterol andhelping prevent heart attacks.
What most people don’t realize is thatyour body also produces cholesterol, infact, all the cholesterol your system needsto function, and that’s why eating excesscholesterol – over the 300 mg recom-mended by the American Heart Associa-tion – can be so dangerous to your circu-latory health.
That’s also why the “Mediterraneandiet,” a diet high in olive oil, fish, fruitsand vegetables and whole grains – inother words, the good cholesterol andtransfatty acids – has been shown to beone which is in general heart healthy.
Finally, reducing alcohol consumptionand quitting smoking have been shown tohelp reduce high blood pressure as well asthe likelihood of heart attack or stroke.

Fatigue can indicate a host ofthings. Men and women who areoverworked feel fatigue, as do menand women whose diet is low onnutrition. Fatigue can also be theresult of a medical condition, whichonly sheds light on how important itis for men and women dealing withfatigue to speak to their physicianabout their condition. In addition to working with a physi-
cian to fight fatigue, there are stepsmen and women can take reducefatigue and start feeling more ener-getic.* Get off the couch. A sedentary
lifestyle will only make it more likelythat you will feel fatigued. Butincluding daily exercise as part ofyour routine will not only boost yourenergy levels, but also improve cir-culation, increase your metabolismand relieve tension, an especiallyvaluable benefit for overworked menand women.
* Get some sleep. The notion thatsleep can help fight fatigue mightsound simple, but a good night'ssleep can elevate energy levelsthroughout the day, helping the bodyrest and recover. Failing to get suffi-cient sleep, which many people findis seven to eight hours per night, canturn today's fatigue into tomorrow'sfatigue, and so on.* Address any sources of stress.
Fatigue can be a side effect of stress. Many men and women find work istheir primary source of stress, butfinances and relationship issues canbe stressful as well. Whatever thesource of your stress, address it anddon't allow it to fester. If it's work, then look for ways to make work lessstressful, whether it's telecommutingmore often or sharing more responsi-bilities. Exercise is a great way torelieve stress, but men and womenfighting stress-related fatigue shouldaddress the source of the stress as
well.* Reduce sugar intake. Sugar might
provide an initial burst of energy, especially for people battling fatigue. However, once your blood sugar lev-els begin to drop, which can happenrather quickly, you will notice arather steep decline in your energylevel. To successfully combat fatigue, avoid relying on quick fixes that onlyoffer temporary relief.* Alter your eating habits. If you're
a proponent of three large meals perday but are battling fatigue, then itmight be time to alter your eatinghabits. Replace the large meals withsmaller meals, and snack throughoutthe day to maintain high energy lev-els. Just be sure to consume healthy
snacks, and don't forget to drinkwater throughout the day. Doing sowill fight dehydration, which canalso cause fatigue.

Q: What is pre-diabetes and how is it different fromdiabetes?A: Pre-diabetes is the state that occurs when a person'sblood glucose levels are higher than normal but not highenough for a diagnosis of diabetes. About 22 percent ofpeople with pre-diabetes in the Diabetes PreventionProgram standard or control group developed type 2 dia-betes each year during the average 3 years of follow-up.Other studies show that many people with pre-diabetesdevelop type 2 diabetes in 10 years.Q: Is pre-diabetes the same as Impaired GlucoseTolerance or Impaired Fasting Glucose?A: Yes. Doctors sometimes refer to this state of elevatedblood glucose levels as Impaired Glucose Tolerance orImpaired Fasting Glucose (IGT/IFG), depending whichtest was used to detect it.Q: How do I know if I have pre-diabetes?A: Doctors can use either the fasting plasma Glucose test(FPG) or the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to detectpre-diabetes. Both require a person to fast overnight. Inthe PFG test, a person's blood glucose is measured firstthing in the morning before eating. In the OGTT, a per-son's blood glucose is checked after fasting and again 2hours after drinking a glucose-rich drink.Q: How does the FPG test define diabetes and pre-diabetes?A: Normal fasting blood glucose is below 100 mg/dl. Aperson with pre-diabetes has a fasting blood glucoselevel between 100 and 125 mg/dl. If the blood glucoselevel rises to 126 mg/dl or above, a person has diabetes.Q: How does the OGTT define diabetes and pre-dia-betes?A: In the OGTT, a person's blood glucose is measuredafter a fast and 2 hours after drinking a glucose-richbeverage. Normal blood glucose is below 140 mg/dl 2hours after the drink. In pre-diabetes, the 2-hour bloodglucose is 140 to 199 mg/dl. If the 2-hour blood glucoserises to 200 mg/dl or above, a person has diabetes.
Q: Why do I need to know if I have pre-diabetes?A: The expert panel recommends that people with predi-abetes reduce their weight by 5-10 percent and partici-pate in some type of modest physical activity for 30 min-utes daily.Q: Will my insurance cover testing and treatment?A: Medicare and most insurance plans cover diabetestesting for people suspected of having diabetes. It is bestto consult your physician and health insurance represen-tative with specific coverage questions.Q: What is the treatment for pre-diabetes?A: Treatment consists of losing a modest amount ofweight (5-10 percent of total body weight) through dietand moderate exercise, such as walking, 30 minutes aday, 5 days a week.Q: Who should get tested for pre-diabetes?A: If you are overweight and age 45 or older, you shouldbe checked for pre-diabetes during your next routinemedical office visit. If your weight is normal and you'reover age 45, you should ask you doctor during a routineoffice visit if testing is appropriate. For adults youngerthan 45 and over weight, your doctor may recommendtesting if you have any other risk factors for diabetes orpre-diabetes. These include high blood pressure, lowHDL cholesterol and high triglycerides, a family historyof diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes or givingbirth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds, or belong-ing to an ethnic or minority group at high risk for dia-betes.Q: Could I have pre-diabetes and not know it?A: Absolutely. People with pre-diabetes don't often havesymptoms. Symptoms of diabetes include unusual thirst,a frequent desire to urinate, blurred vision, or a feelingof being tired most of the time for no apparent reason.
