Pastor Opportunity Profile

Haines Presbyterian Church is a caring family of believers in ECO: a Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. Our church building is located on a six-acre tract of land near the center of Haines. There is an adjacent manse.

Originally started in 1881 by the National Board of Missions of the Presbyterian Church as a mission to the Tlingit Alaska Natives, we are the oldest and largest church in Haines (with an average Sunday worship attendance of around 80). Visitors and seasonal residents increase the average worship attendance to over 100 in the summer.

We have a strong Christian education program for all ages, and an emphasis on worship that blends traditional and contemporary styles. In all things, we call upon God to strengthen our church through deeper commitment and discipleship. Lay participation in various aspects of the worship service is routine and encouraged.

As in many small towns, our church includes people from every walk of life and many denominational backgrounds. Out of this diversity, we find unity in our commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ and in serving Him by serving others. We work with the Haines Ministerial Association in local mission including the Blessing of the Fleet, community Thanksgiving dinner and other joint worship services.

We believe that all people are created in the image of God and affirm that the love and grace of God are available to all. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome.

Who We Are

What We Believe

• WORSHIP - We seek to be a community that incorporates worship in everything that we do. Though worship begins on Sunday morning, it does not end there. God is central to our lives; therefore, His worship is central to our lives.

• FELLOWSHIP – We seek to be a family of believers where biblical fellowship is agrowing reality; a church family where we know both God and one another well.

• DISCIPLESHIP – We seek to be a church committed to being and making disciples of Jesus Christ.

• SERVICE – We seek to be a community where believers are equipped for service to the body of Christ and the world.

• MISSION/EVANGELISM – We seek to be a community where all members see themselves as missionaries.

• SMALL GROUPS – We seek to be a community where small groups are a vital tool to fulfill our church values.

• INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS – We seek to be a church that values people from every generation.

• ECUMENICAL RELATIONSHIPS – We seek to be a vital part of the whole Christian church in Haines.

Core Values

We believe that our core values express what God wants HPC to be and do. They are built first upon the Bible, the inspired and authoritative Word of God. Second, they are informed by the Essential Tenets of the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, which serve as thedoctrinal authority of everything we do.

MISSION STATEMENT To be a flourishing Christ-centered church who joyfully worships God, makes disciples, serves others and welcomes all.

To find out more about Haines

Haines is located in scenic Southeast Alaska, on the western shore of Lynn Canal, 80 air miles northwest of Juneau, Alaska’s capital. It is adjacent to North America’s longest and deepest fjord. About 2,500 people live in the Haines Borough, an area extending 42 miles north and west to the Canadian border. We are surrounded by numerous rivers, lakes, and mountains which rise abruptly from the sea. Moose, bears (both black and grizzly), sea lions, seals and whales populate the area. Every fall, a large gathering of bald eagles occurs in our valley and is celebrated by a local Bald Eagle Festival which draws visitors and townspeople alike.

Alaska Marine Highway ferries and small commuter airlines connect us to Juneau and other Southeast Alaska communities. There is road access from Haines to Canada, interior Alaska and the lower 48 states. Haines abounds in year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation. We have a very active music and arts community. Tourism, services, government, fisheries and mining are the main sources of income. In addition, a large number of retirees live here and are active in the community.

To find out more about our church

We are a strongly mission-minded congregation, supporting individuals and organizations locally and internationally. We spend over 20% of our annual budget for missions.

Our outreach to area youth includes the summer VBS program, which impacts 60-70 local and visiting kids. We have a separate middle/high school youth group which averages 20-25 mostly un-churched young people a week. We also partner with Echo Ranch Haines, a rustic camp eight miles from our church and support Becky's Place, a shelter for domestic violence victims.

Internationally, we support pastors in Africa and Southwest Asia and missionaries with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and many other missions as the need arises.

What We DoSunday Programs

Our Vision, Mission and Core Values form the foundation for where we believe the Lord is leading us.

Specifically, we believe some of the challenges we should focus on are:

● Small Groups – In order to expand our fellowship, nurture and encourage each other and grow and develop in our common faith, we plan to establish the opportunity for supportive small groups. These groups will feature worship, study, fellowship, and service.

● Children and Youth Ministries – We have solid foundations established in both Sunday morning classes, VBS and groups for our children and youth. We want these to strengthen and grow.

● Adult Ministries – The church will need to expand ways to minister to an aging adult population.

● Training Members for Ministry – We believe all Christians are ministers. They should be encouraged to discover and develop both their natural talents and spiritual gifts and then be empowered to use them in service to Christ.

● Mission, Evangelism and Service – We want to provide more hands-on options to serve others in our community and the world. Two-thirds of Haines is un-churched. Our community is a ripe mission field. One of our largest challenges is finding more ways to reach outside our walls with Word and Work.
