Breezing past 150 dual meetconsecutive wins, the Haddon-field Memorial High School boyscross country team is a perennialpowerhouse.
The boroughs close proximityhelps the team prepare for theseason, said Coach Nick Baker.
And prep they do, with prac-
tices beginning in June.We meet all summer, said
Baker.
Rather than working on a tan,the boys work on their stamina.
When the season officially ar-rives in late August, the mantrabecomes faster, faster, faster.
Were not trying to get inshape. Were already in shape,Baker said.
Living within a mile radius ofother teammates makes it easierto meet for practices, simplywalking or riding bikes to the

Veterans Day traces its history
to the end of World War I.
Then known as Armistice Day,
Congress, in the mid-1950s, formally
made it Veterans Day. Its one of those
days of the year that has, or should
have, special meaning for every Ameri-
can.
The sacrifices made by the men and
women of the Armed Services are
well-documented. They protect the na-
tion every day. Without their service,
America isnt the land of the free.
We encourage everyone to not only
recognize veterans on this day, but also
to make a commitment to do some-
thing tangible in their honor.
There are numerous groups thathelp veterans and their families, espe-
cially those who have fallen on hard
times. Volunteer for one of these
groups, or make a donation.
Or get involved in a different organi-
zation that is trying to better your com-
munity. Help to feed the hungry or ad-
vance research into a deadly disease.
Gather clothing and other items and
drop them off at a center that will use
them to help the less fortunate. Do
something to make a difference, to give
back to those around you who can usea helping hand.
We are heading into the holiday sea-
son. Its the easiest time of the year to
get involved because there are so many
ways to give.
In the coming weeks, we invite
everyone who is holding a drive or
fundraiser to contact us with the de-
tails so that we can share them with
the entire community. Give us the days
and times, the drop-off locations and
the items requested, and well do the
rest.
And then we invite our readers to
jump in with generosity.
We can never say thank you too
many times to our veterans. We can
never fully repay them for what they
have done and continue to do for us.
But we can honor them by doingwhat we can to make a difference in
our communities.
in our opinion
Honor veterans SundayVeterans Day a time to honor those who protect our freedom every day
Make a difference
Honor those who serve this VeteransDay by making a tangible contributionto your community.

dences fell, and there were abouta dozen downed wires, he said.
At times, police did need toblock off streets due to downedtrees, but the issues were general-ly quickly resolved, he said.
There was one automobile acci-dent early in the storm, Bordensaid.
According to Chief of PoliceJohn Banning, on Monday, Oct.29, at 6:45 p.m. at the intersection
of Grove Street and HopkinsLane, a tree that fell across theroad hit a car. The driver andchild in the car were transportedby ambulance to Virtua Hospitalin Voorhees, but their conditions
were not immediately known. Many residents stayed indoors
through the duration of thestorm, heeding the advice of theborough, county and state offi-cials.
People really did hunkerdown, Borden said. I thinkthats one reason that we were sofortunate.
Residents were able to stay upto date with occurrences as theyhappened through several bor-ough bulletins on the Haddon-fieldNJ.org website, from closingsto postponements to places tocharge their phones if neededafter the storm passed.
There is no cost estimate thusfar for the damages associatedwith the storm, Borden said.
Weve been told by federal andstate officials even before thestorm to keep very careful ac-
counting of what we suffer interms of expenses, Borden said, for agencies such as FEMA to inpart reimburse costs.
There were still a few treesfelled in Haddonfield as of lastThursday, but the borough wasgenerally in good shape, said Bor-den.
Our volunteers and our bor-ough personnel really were fan-tastic in this, he said, includingthe police auxiliary and almostall-volunteer fire company, as wellas administrative borough em-ployees, public works and the po-lice department.
Crews worked around the clock
to restore order, he said.I cant say enough about them
all, Borden added. At the borough schools,
downed trees and a loss of powercancelled classes until last Thurs-
day.According to Superintendent
of Schools Dr. Richard Perry, large trees fell down, knockingout power lines to the high school,Bancroft School and in parts ofCherry Hill.
As a school district, we had de-bris (and) downed trees aroundcertain areas, said Perry. Anoth-er main concern of ours was thenumber of downed wiresthroughout the community.
Many of those wires, he said, were in the paths of children whowalk to school.
When classes re-convened lastweek, some wires remained
down. Police, he said, monitoredthose spots while children trav-eled to and from school.
School officials met with bor-ough officials and emergencymanagement prior to the storm
in preparation. Its good to know that we have
that type of cooperation withinthe community, he said.
Tatem, Elizabeth Haddon andthe high school had been targetedto be evacuation sites, if needed, said Perry.
Sandy was more of a disrup-tion than Irene last year, he said, between the power loss anddowned wires.
Were just thankful that every-bodys safe, Perry said. Werevery pleased with how weaccomplished what we set out todo.
And that, he said, was keeping
all students safe.To stay up to date on borough
happenings, visit www.haddon-fieldnj.org and follow the updatesof the school district at www.had-donfield.k12.nj.us.

Crews worked around the clock to restore order in borough
Drive, good coaching, parent support keys to success
Its not as inconvenient, saidBaker, as a regional school com-petitor that pulls students from a50-mile radius.
Top runners this season in-clude captains Greg Halla, senior, and John Greenberg, junior.
Halla was a middle school starand came speeding into the highschool.
Hes having a tremendous sea-
son, said Baker.Greenberg had humble begin-nings when he joined the middleschool team, Baker said, but hebuilt himself through hard workand a desire to be good.
Now, Greenberg and Halla bothbring great leadership and organ-ization to the team, he said.
Bakers wife, Maureen Baker, helps with the process at the mid-dle school level.
As coach, she exposes theyoung runners to the sport.
She gets them excited for thepossibility of being successful atthis activity, said Baker.
At that level, student athletes
generally diptheir feet inthe pools of aplethora of
sports, fromsoccer to foot-ball to basket-ball, whiletesting the po-tential ofbeing a longdistance run-ner.
A lot of our middle school kidsjust have tremendously busyschedules, Baker said. Shes veryflexible with the schedule.
To reach full potential as a run-ner, there must be passion in-volved, he said, which is true forany part of life.
Thats the biggest thing, hesaid. They need to be passionateand have a love for what theyredoing.
If you love running, Baker ex-plained, then the training andpractices dont feel like hardwork.
Haddonfields current streak ofwins began in September 1997.
At the time, the teams currentassistant coach, Tom Brennan, was a sophomore in high school.
That status has helped him to
relate to the team while bringingneeded intensity and passion.
Its so great for me to have himaround, said Baker, who hasbeen coach since the 1975-1976school year. It just makes my job
so much more enjoyable andfun.
Even with countless meetsunder their belts, Baker pushes
the team forward, always lookingfor areas of improvement.
Keep getting better, saidBaker. Faster. The best they canpossibly be.
The ultimate goal for this sea-
son, he said, was to be the topteam in the Colonial Conference, which they cinched in mid-Octo-ber against rivals Haddon Town-
ship at Pennypacker Park.At the competition, Halla was a
stand out runner for Haddonfieldwith a time of 15:27.
You want to win your confer-ence, he said. We want to be thetop team in the conference.
Our kids just performed in-credibly well. That was very ex-citing, Baker added.
Next on their agenda is to snagthe Group II State Championshiptitle on Nov. 10 at Holmdel Park, with hopes to compete in the N.J.Meet of Champions a week lateron Nov. 17 in Holmdel.
With 150 down, is the team
heading for 200 consecutive winsnow?Yeah, Baker laughed. Those
runners are currently preppingin middle school.
We have some pretty goodones out there, he said.
The high school team is filledwith younger grade levels. Thereare only three seniors this yearout of the 27 on the roster, saidBaker.
There are three keys to theteams success, he said.
The students drives, goodcoaching and plenty of parentsupport.
We have great kids, he said.
