Jussi Bjrling Music Scholarship
Gustavus Adolphus College recognizes the importance o music as an integral element
in the liberal arts and sciences tradition. The music aculty prepares majors or advanced
studies and or careers as proessional musicians and educators, and engagesnon-majors in the study and perormance o music. The Jussi Bjrling Music Scholarship
rewards musical accomplishment and potential or continued growth as a musician.
Named or the great Swedish opera singer, The Jussi Bjrling Music Scholarship honors
his legacy as a prominent musician. Touring the United States in 1920 with his ather and
brothers, the nine-year-old Bjrling presented a recital at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Ater returning to the United States in 1937, Bjrling made his Metropolitan Opera debut
in 1938 and sang as the leading tenor or the prestigious opera house or the next two
decades. The Chicago Tribune wrote, He would have been extraordinary in any age, or
topnotch tenors are scarce articles. But in our age, he verges on the abulous. Bjrling
was awarded an honorary doctorate by Gustavus, and in 1970 the Jussi Bjrling Recital
Hall was dedicated on campus.
More than 100 recipients are each awarded rom $2,000$6,000 in annual, renewable
scholarship. In addition, winners receive a renewable $580 Gustavus Music Award to
pay or private lesson study at Gustavus. Successul Bjrling Scholarship applicants
typically have had extensive perormance experience in solo and ensemble settings,
pursue individual lesson study, and have been recognized as leaders in their school music
program. This scholarship recognizes the dedication, discipline, and commitment needed
to attain a level o excellence as a perormer. Finalists for the Bjrling Scholarship will be
invited to campus for auditions to be heldFebruary 26 or March 5, 2011.
Candidates must submit an application or admission to Gustavus Adolphus College
and complete the Bjrling Scholarship application. Students need not be music majors
to qualiy or these awards. Though not need-based, awards may be part o a total
need-based nancial package. Renewal is by audition and requires continued
participation in an appropriate ensemble and private music lessons each semester in
residence.

Bjrling les completed ater January 1 will be considered, but please be aware that there
are a limited number o Bjrling Scholarships available each year. It is always best to
submit the completed application by January 1, 2011.

The Gustavus Department o Music, with its thirty-three ull and afliate aculty members,
provides a musical education o recognized excellence. Nearly hal o the students at Gustavus
participate in some orm o music ranging rom individual instruction to participation in anynumber o the thirty-ve perorming organizations. The Department awards the Bachelor o Arts
in Music. Students perorm and study in acilities that include the 475-seat Jussi Bjrling Recital
Hall, Christ Chapel, a ully computerized music lab, class and rehearsal rooms, thirty private
practice rooms, and the Lund Music Library.

CD Audition Recording
Your CD should include two selections rom dierent composers that demonstrate contrasting styles
o perormanceeither solo or solo with accompaniment. Submitted recordings should be no less than
ve minutes and should not exceed ten minutes total running time. Applicants auditioning in more than
one perormance medium should submit separate CDs or each medium. Please label the recording
with your name and audition medium. Announce the title and composer o each work to be perormedon the recording and include that inormation on the label o the CD.
Letter of Recommendation
The Letter o Recommendation must be completed by an ensemble director or an individual
instructor. Students who audition in more than one perormance medium should submit a separate
recommendation letter or each medium.
