CAVEAT

• “Praising effort alone is useless when the child is getting everything wrong and not making progress. Either students will feel misled when they are eventually confronted with the reality of their low achievement, or the hollow praise will convey adults’ low expectations for them.”

• Instead praise process and tie that to the outcome

• Telling students to try harder when they don’t have the skills or strategies to be successful. Effort is only one factor.

• Instead provide meaningful feedback about what the student has done, current understanding and next steps

• Talking growth mindset lip service.

• Have to really believe and mean it. It’s a process and a journey to develop a growth mindset.

WHAT DWECK SAYS…

•“The great teachers believe in the growth of the intellect

and talent, and they are fascinated with the process

of learning.”

GREAT TEACHERS….

•Have high standards for all students, not just the ones who are achieving.

•Create a nurturing and caring environment.

•Work hard and expect their students to work hard, providing them the support to rise to the challenges they set forth for their students.

• Love learning and have a growth mindset about themselves and their students.

I CHALLENGE YOU…

• Take a good look at your own mindset. What parts of your life/profession do you have a growth mindset about? What parts do you have a fixed mindset? How might changing your mindset impact the outcome of challenges you experience

•How will you continue to strive towards greatness, even if you are already great?
