INFANCY
-The term infant is derived from the Latin word
infansor infantia, meaning "unable to speak" or
"speechless."
-The first age of anything; the beginning or early
period of existence; as, the infancy of an art.

First two months of infancy
Satisfying one's basic needs:
Infants can see at birth, but they are very nearsighted and can't
coordinate their eye movements.
Hearing is already at work in the womb, by about the 20th week.
Smell and taste are sharp at birth, and babies have a preference
for sweets.
Has basic reflexes, such as rooting (searching for mom's nipple) and
the startle reflex.
Infants seem to orient towards faces and voices
Able recognize their mother's voice and smell.
The most important psychological task for the infant is called
attachment.

about 2 to 15 months
a period of rapid growth and weight gain. Thenervous system is clearly pulling its act together, andthe infant has a strong drive to move and makenoise. Among its needs now are not only the presence
of a loving adult, but opportunities to experience theenvironment and to explore it.
Inborn personality differences (called temperaments)become very clear: Some babies are easily upset or
frightened, some quick tempered, some easygoing andcalm; Some are active, restless, and fidgety, somequiet an lazy; Some like people, some are shy, someare independent.

rate -- many tripling their birth weights. Milestonessuch as lifting head, rolling, sitting, creeping, and
crawling will all be observed.

and play with baby will set the basis for how she will
interact with you and others.

The following are possible signs of developmental delayduring the first months of a baby's life:
- Sucks poorly and feeds slowly.
- Does not blink when shown a bright light.
- Does not focus and follow a nearby object moving side
to side.
- Rarely moves arms and legs, seems stiff, or seems
excessively loose in the limbs or floppy.
- Lower jaw trembles constantly, even when not crying or
excited.
- Does not respond to loud sounds.
- Does not crawl by twelve months.

- Talk to baby. It is soothing to hear your voice.
- Sing to baby.
- Play music. This helps baby develop a love for music and math.
- Read to baby. This helps her develop and understand language
and sounds.
- Praise baby and give her lots of loving attention.- Spend time cuddling and holding baby. This helps her to feel
cared for and secure
