As you know, Mendel did many
experiments in his garden. His
discoveries became the foundation
of genetics! So what exactly did he
do? Mendel decided to cross plants
with contrasting plants, purebred
of short and tall height. The First
filial generation was all tall plants;
however to his surprise the secondgeneration had around 25% short
plants and 75% tall plants. He
tested his experiments with other
alleles and the same result
occurred. Mendel reasoned that
genetic information must control
the inheritance of traits in peas,
and that this genetic information.
The male and female parents eachcontribute a factor, and finally
some factors hide others.
The Experiment The Abbey Gregor Mendel
The Abbey where Gregor Mendel
performed his experiments was an
Augustinian Monastery, lying in
the southwest area of Brno. It was
at this abbey where he was first a
monk, and then became its
Abbott.
The Abbey
The Grounds of the Abbey
Gregormendel, wasborn on July 22, 1822 in Heinzendorf bei
Odrau, Austrian Silesia, Austrian
Empire (nowHynice, Czech Republic). From
1840 to 1843, he studied practical and
theoretical philosophy as well as physics. In
1843 Mendel began his training as a priest.
Thanks to the recommendation of
his physics teacher Friedrich Franz, he entered
the Augustinian Abbey of St Thomas in
Brno in 1843. Other than his work on plant
breeding while at the Abbey, Mendel also
liked to breed bees in a bee house that was
built for him, using bee hives that he designed.
He also studied meteorology and astronomy.
Gregor Mendel died on January 6, 1884, at the
age of 61, in Brno, Moravia, Austria-
Hungary (now Czech Republic), from
chronic nephritis.
