frequentlycallthe“darkside”ofthemoon(thatpart we can’t see) should really be referred to as the “far side.” Ithasonlybeenphotographedfrom spacecraft. The surface is covered by a man-tle made up of an 825-mile-thick layer of ironandmagnesium-richrockknownasregolith.It’sbeen pounded by meteors, asteroids, and com-ets, which have created countless craters across its expanse.Thewidest craters are 140miles indiameterandareasdeepas15,000ft.Therearemountainsstandingashighas16,000ft.It’sesti-matedthatthemoonweighsabout81quintilliontons.
• Although themoon looks round tous, it’s real-lyegg-shaped.Aswe lookat it, the smallerendoftheeggispointedtowardus.Itappearstobeabout the same size as the sun, but it’s actually400timessmaller.Becausethemoonis400timescloser to Earth than the sun is, the two appearaboutthesamesize.ThemoonisactuallymovingawayfromEarthabout1.5inchesayear.
• Gravity on themoon is just 1/6 that of Earth.Thismeans if youweigh120 lbs. onEarth, youweighonly20lbs.onthemoon.Andifyoudon’tfeellikedieting,rememberthatbecauseofgravi-tationaleffects,youweighjustabitlesswhenthemoon is directly overhead.
•Theworldfirst saw close-upTVpictures of themoon’s surface in 1964 when images were sentbackbyRanger7,thefirstU.S.spaceprobe.
• InMay, 1961,President JohnF.Kennedy statedhisgoalinanaddresstoCongressof“landingamanonthemoonandreturninghimsafelytotheEarth”bytheendofthe1960s.Thefirstmannedspacecraft to the moon was Apollo 8 in 1968,whenFrankBorman,JamesLovell,andWilliamAnderscircledthemoon10timesbeforeheadingbacktoEarth.
•The Apollo 11 crewmade history in July, 1969when they made the first landing. On July 20,Neil Armstrong became the first human to setfootonthemoon.ThereareveryfewAmericansunfamiliar with his famous words, “That’s one

• Doyouknowthedifferencebetweenwaxingandwaning?During thephasesof themoon’s cycle, when it appears to be getting larger, it’s calledwaxing, whilewaning iswhen it appears to getsmaller.
• If we didn’t have themoon, the oceans wouldhave no tides.
