WHAT DRIVES THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY
For many companies in the logistics industry, the issue of
digitalization is already very high on the agenda. However,
many companies face great challenges in implementing them.
For instance, issues that supply chain managers regularly face
in their day-to-day work include known problems such as
cooling system failure, goods that unnoticed become spoiled
during transport, lack of the delivery vehicle's current position
because the driver does not respond, or finished parts that are
picked up too late.
In 2019, digital association Bitkom surveyed approx. 500
logistics companies for its study, “Digitalization of Logistics.”
Although the majority was indeed convinced that digitalization
will fundamentally change goods transport in the coming years,
many companies are still hesitant in practice: Only one out of
every ten companies uses software to predictively service
machines and vehicles; only one out of five uses data analyses.
MORE EFFICIENT USE OF DRIVERS
In addition, there is the challenge of using drivers as efficiently
as possible to optimally use existing resources, accelerate
processes on ramps, dynamically plan routes, and therefore
prevent empty runs.
Failing to keep track of the individual value-creation stages costs logistics companies time and money. Digital solutions can already help to make the supply chain more transparent.
This is also confirmed by a BVL member survey (2019) on the
issue of “Digitalization of the transport chain and the role of the
drivers” with over 400 participating managers from industry,
retail, and logistics.
UNIVERSAL DATA EXCHANGE
Furthermore, the survey shows that a universal data exchange
along the entire logistics chain and the standardized data
platform that this requires are hot topics for many logistics
companies. However, the lack of willingness on the part of
those involved and the lack of technical capabilities for
exchanging data pose significant barriers in implementing
digital tools where trust and data protection are of the utmost
priority. There is also a difference between the area of shipment
data, where there is already a high level of data exchange
between partners in the transport chain, and the areas of
demand forecasts, material flow disruptions, and status
information, where this is not yet the case.
At the same time, there are already smart solutions that supply
chain managers can use to simply and cost-effectively digitalize

At first glance, they may seem like
inconspicuous devices, but they increase

Once an employee has finished a system
component, they do not need to either reach
for the telephone nor write a message to their

press, and their colleagues immediately

part pickup. This automation saves you the

Data is transferred between the bell and the

Krones’ Wi-Fi network as there is to install

Continental uses small load carriers in
intralogistics. These are transport boxes that
the technology company provides sorted by
model and on pallets for locations and
customers. Paper and manual labor are
currently required to determine the
destinations and places of use. Pallets are
manually labeled, and if there are any changes,
employees immediately print out new paper
and need to apply them. If there are missing
pallets and boxes or if they must be
inventoried, this can be done only manually as
well.

SMART CAMPUS NETWORKIn the future, OSRAM wishes to use autonomous robot vehicles to transport heavy goods on its production facilities in the Schwabmünchenfactory. Telekom provides the high-speed network required to do so.
Mobile transport robots, or what are known as
automated guided vehicles (AGV), must be
able to adapt themselves to newer and newer
situations and respond quickly, e.g., to prevent
accidents with people. However, this was
impossible using the existing ICT
infrastructures on OSRAM premises. To
smoothly operate AGVs as the basis for a smart
factory, you need a wireless network with
guaranteed, adequately high performance.
OSRAM opted for an integrated platform: A
wireless campus network based on a public
mobile network and a local edge cloud to
achieve the minimum latencies needed to
smoothly operate the AGVs.
LOCAL COMPUTING POWER PLUS A FAST WIRELESS NETWORK
The campus network now gives the location
a flexible, private, LTE-based wireless
infrastructure. As a result, the factory in
Schwabmünchen is equipped with a secured,
high-performance network with guaranteed
service quality that ensures communication
between the AGVs and the local computing
capacities. Edge computing capacities near
the AGVs process the data for mapping and
navigation, which keeps latency low.
Sensitive data remains local on the campus
edge cloud. Furthermore, OSRAM can use the
campus network in Schwabmünchen to
evaluate digitalization projects live in a real
production environment in the future.
At the same time, the new network improves
wireless network reception for employees and
guests who wish to work mobile on the
company premises. As part of managed
services, Deutsche Telekom handles the full

Ensuring the safety of drivers and goods, optimizing routes, and servicing vehicles in a timely manner: Industrie- und TransportschutzThüringen GmbH (ITT), a security services company, uses the Drive & Track cloud solution to manage its fleet.
ROUTE MANAGEMENT FROM THE CLOUD
Cash pick-ups, delivering change, or transporting valuables: For nearly 30 years, ITT has been transporting money and valuable items trustfully and securely. The Erfurt-based company currently has approx. 250 vehicles on the road all over Germany. Shipment routes must be changed on a regular basis in order to protect drivers and goods from robberies. To that end, ITT has moved its route management to the cloud.
ITT uses Deutsche Telekom's Drive & Track cloud solution for dynamic route planning. The system consists of trackers with integrated SIM cards. The intelligent devices can be used immediately and can be connected to the vehicles’ OBD2 interfaces without installation.
As a result, they are connected to the Internet of Things and send their data to a cloud-based platform via the mobile network. ITT uses it to consistently view the activities of its transporters, enabling them to flexibly adapt routes.

lawn in the summer: 350 people currently work
for Erfurt-based Avant Gebäudedienste GmbH.

Fuel and working hours: These are valuable
resources that Avant saves by connecting
vehicles to the cloud. Employees in operations
management use the web portal to develop the
optimum routes along the individual order
stages. As a result, the company has managed
to increase productivity and reduce fuel
consumption by 20 percent. In addition, asset
monitoring reduces the risk of automobile
breakdowns, because the tracking devices
also transmit information about the condition
of the vehicles to the cloud. If there is an
impending defect, operations management

However, the devices often run on outdated operating systems for which neither security updates nor support are available. Taking care of connectivity, device management, and maintenance of these devices themselves is very cumbersome for many companies.

Deutsche Telekom offers barcode scanners from its partner Zebra Technologies, the global market leader in enterprise mobile computing, as an all-round, no-hassle, device-as-a-service model. In addition to the devices, the package contains the SIM card including connectivity (2G to 5G), a device management solution, software updates, SLAs, and a device protection insurance policy.
Deutsche Telekom's Mobile Optimization Service delivers a reliable mobile network connection including data encryption. It is billed per month and per device.

There is no need for high initial investments,
and costs can be planned transparently thanks

they do not need to provide personnel for
installation, device management, and
maintenance. Scanners are regularly updated
to the latest Android version, and if a device is

Hirsch Glas GmbH paints up to 200,000 glasses per day. If they are not
delivered punctually and in a perfect state, the assembly line stands still. The company has solutions ready so that the logistics and production operate smoothly.
MONITOR, DETECT, AND ACT
The mid-sized company from Oberlahr in
Westerhald does not store most of its glasses
directly on its company premises. Trucks
deliver different batches of glasses directly to
the company on a daily basis. Depending on
the order
Hirsch Glas rearranges its production lines
every day: The spraying machines are filled
with new paint, the assembly line is rearranged
for the expected number of glasses, and the
furnaces are emptied.
As a result, logistics companies immediately
notice whenever there are delays and arrival
times cannot be adhered to. This gives Hirsch
Glas employees timely notice that a delivery is
delayed, allowing them to more effectively plan
the renovation of the entire system, since the
glass finisher has also connected its furnaces
to the Internet of Things. Up to ten sensors in
the ovens record the internal temperature in
ten-second intervals and send the output to T-
Systems’ Cloud of Things. Quality suffers if the
temperature falls below a threshold value or
exceeds the maximum temperature. The data
is processed in an app, and temperature
fluctuations are directly reported.
As such, Hirsch Glas can use connected ovens
to, e.g., forgo having to perform morning
control calls to the factory and immediately
respond to alarms.
