Vintage car owners morethan fair weather drivers
TC081009DB02WAIKATO Veteran and Vintage Car Club enthusiasts braved atrociousweather on Sunday for a run, which included a stopover for morning tea atOparau Roadhouse. About 50 cars took part in the local rally, arriving atOparau via Ngutunui Rd and down the Okupata Rd. The rally then worked itsway to Otorohanga for lunch.
AA keep watchon fuel pricesP
etrol prices fell 14c per litre during September, anddiesel 7c per litre, largely due to the steadily climbingNew Zealand exchange rate.According to AA PetrolWatch, the price of a litre of
91-octane petrol fell from $1.69 to $1.55 in the main centres, with diesel down from $1.07 to $1.00 per litre. These are thelowest fuel prices since May 2009.AA Motoring Affairs General Manager Mike Noon says
‘‘the Kiwi dollar rose nearly four cents during the month, while commodity prices, particularly refined petrol, fell orwere stable. The combination of the two positive trends is adouble windfall for motorists, hence the falling pumpprices.’’‘‘Retail prices are much lower than the last time crude oil
and refined petrol prices were this high, in October 2008.Back then a litre of petrol cost $1.82 and the New Zealanddollar was worth 10c less against the US dollar.’’
PETROL TAX RISEFrom the beginning of the month the fuel excise on
petrol rose 3c per litre, to 56.129c (excluding GST). Theincrease incorporates a 1.5c increase scheduled by theformer Labour Government, and a 1.c increase whichreplaces plans for regional fuel taxes. Diesel Road UserCharges (RUC) also increased on 1 October. The average motorist, driving a small or medium-sized
car approximately 14,000kms annually, can expect to paybetween $32 and $43 more per year in petrol tax, while adiesel user will pay an extra $50 in RUC.‘‘While the AA recognises fuel tax and RUC increases are
necessary to fund the Government’s roading infrastructureplans, we are disappointed with the ten percent rise in RUCfor light diesels, which is higher than the three to six percentincrease for heavy trucks,’’ says Mr Noon.
AA SUPPORTS DIESEL EXCISE TAXThe AA would like to see the introduction of an excise tax
for diesel, to replace the RUC, and this is supported by 73%of surveyed AA Members.Mr Noon says ‘‘an excise tax in place of RUC would mean
the light diesel vehicles would pay the same taxes as petrolusers and would reduce compliance costs and avoidance.’’‘‘With an excise tax on diesel at the pump, those who use
more fuel, either because of the distance they travel or dueto poorer fuel economy, would pay more. Moving to anexcise tax on diesel would not only be fairer, as taxes wouldbe the same for both light petrol and diesel vehicles, itwould also encourage the uptake of light, fuel-efficient,environmentally-friendly diesel vehicles.’’‘‘Heavy vehicle and trucks would still need to purchase
RUC if there is an excise on diesel — this is to cover the extrawear and damage they cause to the roads.’’

Mitsubishi Triton deal a stealBY DEAN TAYLOR
Mitsubishi has been talkingdeals on the Triton latelywhich must represent good
news for buys looking for a ute.I recently had a drive of the highly
appointed GLX-R from Te AwamutuMotors, complete with extras, whichhad thousands knocked off the price. The 2WD diesel double cab repre-
sents great value for someone whoneeds a workhorse, without theadded cost of 4WD.The 2.5 litre common rail diesel
gives 102kW of power and 319Nm oftorque — contained in the goodlooking, well appointed Triton. It still has an unbraked towing
capacity of 750kg, and 2500kg forbrakes trailers, so its a model pre-pared to work.
UPGRADES FOR 4WDMitsubishi is preparing to intro-
duce upgraded 4WD variants of itsTriton ute featuring a new generationdiesel engine that delivers increasedpower and torque plus lower fuelconsumption from a smaller displace-ment.Expected to go on sale in the final
quarter of the year, the new 2.5-litrediesel engine will deliver 131kW — an11kW increase over the current3.2-litre diesel engine.Torque improves from 353Nm on
the outgoing engine to a class-leading 400Nm at 2000rpm on man-ual models. On automatic models, torque output is capped at 350Nm.The enhanced figures have been
achieved through changes to thecombustion chamber shape, optimised injector specifications, adding a variable geometry turbocharger and increasing turbo charg-ing pressure. For manual transmission 4WD
models, fuel consumption reduces to8.3 litres per 100km (down from 9.1litres per 100km on the currentmodel) and, for the automaticmodels, the new engine consumes9.3L/100km (currently 9.9L/100km).
Towing capacity will also beincreased for the 2010 Triton 4WD, upby 200kg to 2700kg on the dual-cab4x4s with long bed and 3000kg on allother 4WDs.
Accompanying the new 2.5-litrediesel engine will be some detailexterior changes for the Triton, including new front bumpers, grilleand side-turning lamps.
Inside there will be new seatfabric and seat pads, a new instru-ment cluster , f loor consoletreatments along with a new soundsystem.
Legend back forDunlop TargaF
ive years ago Chris Amon and retired F1Commentator, Murray Walker, participated in the10th Anniversary Targa Rally of NZ. That co-
incided with the release of Chris Amon’s biographyForza Amon, written by motor sport’s respectedhistorian, Eoin Young.Five years later Chris Amon is back, but this time in
a support role. For those 15 years of Targa NZ the various district
councils, towns and cities along the Targa route toWellington have supported the event to varyingdegrees. This year their Mayor or CEO’s will lead theevent from the passenger seat alongside the legen-dary Amon. The idea is the brainchild of Targa’s Event Director
Peter Martin who said; ‘‘Between the Targa Tourentrants and the triple zero (000) safety car there is a20 minute’window’ in which Chris Amon will drive thetarmac rally route.’’Chris Amon has been an’Ambassador’ for the
Toyota Racing Series since it’s inception and throughthat relationship, Lexus NZ will equip Amon with aLexus ISF. It’s a 311kw 5 litre V8 that produces 505nmof torque via an eight speed tiptronic gearbox.Stopping power comes from the biggest Brembobrakes on the market.Sir Jackie Stewart, three timesWorld Motor Racing
Champion is quoted as saying; ‘‘Chris Amon is one ofthe most skilful and natural drivers ever to graceFormula One.’’Eion Young says; ‘‘Yet, for all this undeniable talent
behind the wheel, Amon did’nt win a single WorldChampionship Grand Prix. As one of his fellow driverspurportedly quipped;’If Chris Amon quit racing andtook up undertaking, people would stop dying !!’’’Young continues; ‘‘Amon wove his special brand of
motoring magic in the days before saturation TVcoverage that could have assured him of hero statusat home. Many New Zealanders are still surprised tolearn, that for three seasons in the late sixties, one oftheir own led the Ferrari Team.’’The Dunlop Targa is a seven day event from
October 25 to November 1 from Auckland toWellington. The event’s Prologue (car, driver and co-driver shake-down) will be at the new InternationalMotorsport complex at Hampton Downs. Labour DayMonday will consist of tarmac racing at threemotorsport tracks, Pukekohe Park Raceway, HamptonDowns and Taupo.

To celebrate the 20th anniversaryof the iconic MX-5 in New Zea-land, Mazda — together with the
MX-5 Club — is having a nationalconvoy which will culminate in a rallyin Nelson over Labour Weekend.Around 150 people in 80 vehicles
are expected to take part, includingtwo special edition MX-5 models beingshipped from Japan especially for theevent. Two convoys, one starting in Auck-
land and the other in Invercargill, willwind their way through the countryfrom October 18, picking up membersof the Mazda MX-5 Club along the way. Each convoy will be led by a 2009 MX-5 and a special edition model inSunflower Yellow, each with retro-themed branding. The convoy reaches Te Awamutu on
the afternoon of Monday, October 19.A host of activities are lined up for
the weekend in Nelson, including adrive through the Motueka Valley and a20th anniversary dinner on the night ofSunday, October 25.Andrew Clearwater, Managing
Director Mazda New Zealand, said the
week-long event will celebrate the MX-5 which has been hugely popular inNew Zealand since its 1989 launch.‘‘The MX-5 is a much-loved vehicle
for many New Zealanders. Mazda isexcited to be joining forces with theMazda MX-5 Club and taking the carson convoy. I think they’ll attract a lot ofattention as they travel through theprovinces,’’ said Clearwater. This is not the first time Mazda has
partnered with the Mazda MX-5 Club.In October 2005, Mazda set a newGuinness World Record for the largestparade of MX-5 cars when 249 MazdaMX-5 enthusiasts formed a 4km par-
ade to celebratethe launch of thethird generationmodel.‘ ‘We are
delighted to beinvolved in the20th anniversary ofthe MX-5. We havearound 500 mem-bers in the clubwho are all lookingforward to cele-
brating the car we are so passionateabout,’’ said Paul Bryant, Mazda MX-5Club President. The Mazda MX-5 was first revealed
to the world at the Chicago Auto Showin February 1989. In March 2009,Mazda launched the latest version ofthe sports car with improved designand performance features while retain-ing the fun-to-drive factor that makesthe vehicle so popular. The MX-5 has won more than 170
awards around the world to date, including the New Zealand Car of theYear in 1990 and again in 2005 for thethird generation model.

has specialised in high qualityimported motor vehicles fromJapan and Singapore. Its a hands-on businesses — all
vehicles offered for sale are handpicked by them, the vehiclesundergo a full VTNZ compliancecheck on-site and their fullyequipped service department hasqualified technicians to take care ofany pre-sale or after-sale servicingand repairs. In fact Watson Haworth Motors,
a founding member of the IMVDA—Imported Motor Vehicle Association— and also members of the MTA —Motor Trade Association — andRegistered Motor Vehicle Traders, pride themselves on their ability tooffer a wide-ranging, high standardof service.Everything from servicing and
repairs, painting and supplying andfitting new tyres, through to utedeck construction is catered for bythe team.Courtesy vehicles are available

their work, ensuring vehiclesimported for sale meet the highestsafety standards for our roads. It is an invasive inspection
which is done on every importedvehicle. As well as inspecting their own
vehicles, Watson Haworth Motors isthe area agent for other vehicleswhich also require stripping forinspection, many of them privatelyowned vehicles such as USAimports, classic cars and vehiclesbeing re-registered.The vehicle is stripped and

Used imports come of age
BY DEAN TAYLOR
In 1988 Watson Haworth Motors wereone of the first used car dealerships inNew Zealand to become involved in
the importation of used cars, mainly fromJapan, into New Zealand. After 21 years the company is well
established at the forefront of the indus-try that changed the face of New Zealand
motoring.It hasn’t always been easy — the
industry has received more than its fairshare of criticism, and rules are con-stantly changing. But for Watson Haworth Motors it has
been a matter of keeping ahead of thegame and fulfilling the aim of providingthe best car for the best money for Kiwis. With plenty of choice, it isn’t hard to
find a good vehicle to suit your needs, atthe right price.Currently the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy
is a popular choice in the under $10,000range. I drove a 2000 model with the 1.8Viengine which makes 120kW of power and135Nm of torque. The four door family sedan comes
reasonably well appointed and is a goodperformer in the smaller sedan class.

TC081009DB10SONS of carriers: Marty Greaves (left) and David Hall, who write histories of trucking in New Zealand, in MrGreaves office with his ‘from scratch’ scale models of classic trucks.
Hedoesn’t drive trucks for a living, but David Hall has had a lifelongfascination with big rigs from the
days when his father Monty and uncleKen ran Hall Transport out of Kihikihi. Heeven got his HT at the age of 18 and haskept it current all these years. Now in Hamilton, Mr Hall decided
some time ago he should put down allthe stories he heard over the years fromsome great characters of carrying onpaper. Here in Te Awamutu, another son of
a trucker has also had a lifelong interestin trucks, right from the days when heused to skip school and drive without alicence for his father Colin in Karioi.Marty Greaves did get his HT licence
at the age of 16, after being caught bythe local constabulary, and has beeninvolved in the business ever since.Early on he bought into a business,
and eventually worked his way north, viaPutaruru, and did a stint driving forOsbornes Transport in the 70’s, wasthen an owner/driver in the 80’s, beforeheading to Australia. He returned to Te Awamutu and
drove buses for Hodgson Motors beforesetting up Rosetown Buses, which hesold and bought Osbornes Transport.Mr Greaves also had an interest in
writing about the trucking past, as wellas making scale models from scratch ofsome of the great machines fromyesteryear. The pair discovered each other’s
interest through writing for TruckJournal, a popular subscription onlymonthly trucking magazine. They have gathered a wealth of
material, working to themes such as aparticular business, carriers from par-ticular towns or regions, or families of
truckies.Already stories on Osbornes Trans-
port, Crown Transport, George Sinclairand Waipa Transport have been pub-lished by Truck Journal. They have recently worked on a
larger theme— Trucking in Waipa — fora forthcoming issue. They travel far andwide to track down the stories, anddifficult to find photographs.Mr Greaves says people ask us to do
stories, and we oblige because its is alove, but it is getting harder to find theimages to compliment the stories. And although they have ‘completed’
their Waipa story for Truck Journal, theyrealise it is probably far from complete ifthey could only find everything that theywanted.Anyone with any history andimages relating to local trucking firmsare welcome to call Mr Greaves (8701028) to discuss the matter.

One day while turning in to the Oparausaleyards, he was hit by local farmerIan Hills in his Ford Anglia who wasracing another farmer to the sale... Ianwalked away without a scratch but theAnglia was written off...Waipa Transport ran from 1948-64
