A copy of all grant applications to external agencies must be submitted to the Grants Administration & Government Programs (GAGP) Department as soon as possible to obtain School Board approval. Grant contracts and funds will not be awarded without Board approval. A copy may be submitted via e-mail to [email protected] or via pony mail to GAGP to the 4th Floor of the K.C. Wright Administrative Building. All grant applications MUST support the District’s Strategic Plan Goals of High-Quality Instruction, Continuous Improvement, and Effective Communication and align to District Priority Initiatives.
Grant Development Process and How GAGP Can Help You
1 GAGP can help to develop your idea by facilitating a group brainstorming meeting, conducting a needs assessment and creating a program plan.
2 GAGP can help to identify funding opportunities through the Grant Funding Newsletter, cultivating donors, and providing individual research.
3 GAGP can work with you to ensure a timely submission, seek School Board review and approval of the grant, and provide editing and writing support.
4 GAGP can help set-up the grant account, support the grant agreement review and approval process, provide donor stewardship, and support media outreach efforts.
5 GAGP can help you to manage the award by supporting the reporting process.
6 If applicable, GAGP will liaison with the Accounting & Financial Reporting Department for assistance with the final financial report.
Community Foundation of Broward Supports BCPS Middle
School Students
The Community Foundation of Broward (CFB) has made the largest grant in its history, $3 million, to the District for the Reimagining Middle Grades (RMG) initiative that is intended to change the way curriculum is delivered in the middle grades environment. RMG will focus on the transition to project-based learning that will engage every student and give them a deeper understanding of career pathways, issues the community confronts, and exposure to electives, while simultaneously providing wrap-around services and social-emotional learning. Grants Administration & Government Programs staff worked in collaboration with the Office of Academics, the Office of School Performance and Accountability, and Student Assessment and Research to develop the grant application. Jobs for Florida’s Graduates Continues Support
to BCPS
Jobs for Florida’s Graduates (JFG) is a robust work and life skills development program for middle and high school students who need supportive services to increase their likelihood of high school completion. With these grant programs, students will explore careers, work within teams, develop leadership skills, create and manage wealth, serve their communities, and build a workable plan for their post-graduation life. Starting this year, JFG will support Hallandale Magnet, Miramar and South Plantation High Schools with grants of $45,000 per program for five programs for a total of $225,000. Novo Approves Grant to Foster Social and
Emotional Learning
The Novo Foundation, in partnership with Education First and Supported by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, aims to seed district-wide projects that foster social and emotional skills in students. We are excited to receive $25,000 for the “Psyched: A Mindset. A Purpose” which is a multi-tiered teacher and student fellowship program that infuses culturally responsive social + emotional skills to strengthen the mind and body of underserved student populations. The full year fellowship program will develop teachers and students as social emotional (S+E) intelligent leaders through S+E coaching and leadership development. Fellows will co-create and implement school-based social emotional
learning and character development initiatives to improve school culture and climate. Through their culminating project, fellows will elevate to SEL Ambassadors, mentoring and addressing issues, and challenges of the District’s most struggling communities. Network Spring Forum
The Florida Grant Developers Network K-12 was created to help grant developers by
providing opportunities for networking to share their expertise, knowledge, best practices, and to solve common problems to better meet the needs of the public-school systems they serve. The Network connects grant professionals working in nearly all of Florida’s 67 public school districts. GAGP staff participated in this year’s forum in Tallahassee to meet with leaders from the Florida Department of Education and other network members working on State and Federal education grants.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Approves
Grant to BCPS
Schools play a critical role in promoting the health and safety of young people and helping them establish lifelong healthy behaviors. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has approved a grant of up to $1,800,000 to BCPS to promote adolescent health through school-based HIV/STD prevention and to increase access to sexual health education. GAGP staff were responsible for gathering application information from Student Support Initiatives, facilitating proposal preparation timelines, providing editorial assistance, Board approval, and award call coordination support.

Coral Springs High School Receives Lowe’s Grant for
School Beautification
The Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education® grant to Coral Springs High School for school beautification. Coral Springs High School is one of 608 schools across the United States to be awarded a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant. Grant funds were used to purchase Native Florida shrubs, trees and flowers, that were planted in the school courtyard. Benches were also installed for extra seating and collaboration spaces. The patio tables and surrounding walls were painted in the school colors. “We spend a lot of time in our school courtyard for lunches, outdoor learning and peer to peer collaborations. How many grants have you been awarded and what is the total dollar amount awarded? Over the last 21 years in Education, I’ve written numerous grants averaging approximately $5,000 a year which is over $100,000 in grant funding for various programs and schools in Broward County.
Which grant-supported project is your favorite? I really like them all and get excited about the opportunities and projects grant funding allows me to pursue. I’ve received grants for professional development, school beautification, school library grants and various projects. I have worked at a center school for students with disabilities, and at the elementary, middle and high school levels. I feel it is important to note that the funding I have received for materials, technology and curriculum stays at the school I originally wrote the project for. Since I write grants for projects to benefit a specific group of the students, staff or school; the materials stay at that school to continually benefit that community even though I’ve moved to a different location. I know that is not required it’s my way of giving back because I truly love all of my past school communities.
What is your process for filling out a grant application? First, I read through the entire grant application so I am aware of all the questions as I am writing. It’s important that your project objectives, purpose and budget are all tied together. So, if you are asking for funding for technology you should really have an objective and purpose that connects to students using technology. I like to give brief examples explaining the need for funding or to use educational research to back up my request.
Do you have any grant writing tips? Read through the complete application, answer all questions as clearly as you can leaving out educational jargon or if needed spell out educational abbreviations. I also check the Foundation’s or Organization’s webpage to see if they give examples of past projects. This really helps me to get an idea of what kinds of programs they’ll fund. Although I have written grants for the maximum amount allowed, for the most part I always choose a grant amount a little below the maximum. Whenever possible I let the grant reader know we would be appreciative of any amount awarded. That increases the odds of getting some funding if not the full amount requested.

Can my school principal sign the grant application form? Principals must sign application forms when their signature is specifically requested.
Can my school principal sign a grant contract, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or agreement? No, if the form asks for the signature of the Superintendent, Executive Director, Chief Executive Officer, or Authorized Official, then only the Superintendent and School Board Chair can sign.
