Foreword

Wales
Core Values
My name is Allison Williams and I have been the
CEO of Cwm Taf University Health Board for over 8
years. I have a track record of inves$ng in leadership
and management capacity because I believe it
makes a fundamental difference to the quality of
pa$ent care.
Our award-winning Cwm Taf GraduateGrowth
programme, now in its fourth year, is an example of
our commitment. My Execu$ve team and I are
determined to con$nue to invest in our leadership
and management talent pipeline through
development programmes such as this.
I am passionate that we have managers in the NHS
in Wales who can work together with clinicians to
make a real difference for our pa$ents and
popula$on. At Cwm Taf that means managers who
make our ethos of ‘Cwm Taf Cares’ come to life in all
that they do.
Are you ready to join a progressive leadership community to serve our
popula%on? If so I want to hear from you!
Allison Williams Chief Execu$ve, Cwm Taf University Health Board
Introduc%on Cwm Taf University Health Board is
one of seven Health Boards within
Wales. The good news is that this
year we are working with our
neighbouring health boards—
Cardiff & Vale and Powys, and
NHS Wales Shared Services Part-
nership (NWSSP) to look for the
next genera$on of talent to sup-
port them ‘at their best’. We want
people with passion, enthusiasm,
commitment and fresh ideas, who
ul$mately want to further their
career within health in Wales.
We want graduates to support us
with the transforma$on of our
services and keep us at the
forefront of service delivery for our
community and pa$ents. We want
to ensure a pipeline of leadership
talent for the future.
We want our graduates to bring
compassion along with the ability
GraduateGrowth: growing future leaders and Cwm Taf together
to champion and ac$on change.
Ul$mately, we want individuals
with the understanding and drive
to want to improve pa$ent care
and experience across all aspects
of Cwm Taf services and our
partnering Health Boards.
Cwm Taf’s award-winning two
year GraduateGrowth programme
introduces par$cipants to the
skills required for effec$ve
management and supports them
to develop specific personal and
professional leadership and
management knowledge and
skills, in a variety of pa$ent facing
and corporate support services.

Cwm Taf Graduate Growth Par$cipants 2018-20 Chloe: Here is a little taster of what you could look forward to if you
are a successful applicant—Over the last 10 weeks I have been completing an administrative review within the Radiology depart-ments across Cwm Taf University Health Board. I have been sup-porting the staff on the frontline, networking with other departments and health organisations such as NWIS, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg and Cardiff & Vale. Each placement opens so many different doors and offers new opportunities you know that no two will be the same!
Anna: Why should you apply? - The Graduate Growth scheme is
a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge and experience of working across various operational and strategic areas. I have had an opportunity to take significant levels of responsibility on real-life projects, and right from the start I have been contributing to work that matters. I have met great and committed people and I really enjoy the dynamic of the organisation – no two days are the same.
Cwm Taf University Health Board
Cwm Taf University Health Board provides primary,
community, hospital and mental health services to
almost 300,000 people living in Merthyr Tydfil and
Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Our philosophy ‘Cwm Taf Cares’ is at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to the health, wellbeing
and development of our staff is recognised with the highly coveted Pla$num Corporate Health Standard.
With almost 8,000 staff our workforce is the life-blood not only of the University Health Board, but many of the
South Wales Valleys’ communi$es that we serve. We take our role as the area’s second largest employer very
seriously and this is evident in our wide-ranging partnership working, dedica$on to our corporate social
responsibili$es and the importance we place on building rela$onships with our staff and community.
We believe in innova$on to make improvement to clinical care. Developments over recent years mean that we
now have the most modern healthcare estate in Wales. We run two district general hospitals, five community
hospitals and a state-of-the-art University Health Park, with an Academic Centre helping to train future doctors in
community medicine. We have developed strong rela$onships with the University of South Wales , Cardiff
University and Cardiff Metropolitan University as research, teaching, innova$on and evidence based prac$ce are
vital to drive up standards and build a beBer future for our valley communi$es.
Our high pa$ent sa$sfac$on score in the Fundamentals of Care audit is testament to the hard work of our staff
and their ongoing commitment to our philosophy of Cwm Taf Cares.
If you come to work in Cwm Taf you will be guaranteed a warm Welsh welcome; opportuni$es for professional
development and a clinical environment that innovates to improve.
Cwm Taf, along with other Health Boards in Wales, is asked by the Welsh Government to consider our plans for
the future.. in our three year integrated plan. In refreshing the IMTP for the forthcoming three year period, the
Health Board has reviewed and revised its vision and corporate objec$ves (as set out in the previous IMTP (2016-
19) through the lens of the Well-being of Future Genera$ons Act. As a result, the UHB Board agreed that its
refreshed vision is: “To be recognised as a popula$on well-being organisa$on that con$nually makes a posi$ve
contribu$on to improving the lives of all Cwm Taf residents”.
About the area Cwm Taf University Health Board is ideally situated between Wales capital city Cardiff to the South and the
stunning scenery in the Brecon Beacons Na$onal Park to the North. We operate within a vibrant community, rich
with history and heritage, widely recognised across the UK and around
the world as the driving force of the industrial revolu$on and the coal
industry.
The area is rever$ng to its pre-industrial beauty and you’ll find a wide
range of landscapes;: majes$c mountains, country parks, forests,
waterfalls, natural and manmade lakes which, together with the built
environment, produces a unique and interes$ng region. There are
many valleys in Wales but nowhere is there such pride and passion and
nowhere will you find so warm a welcome as within Cwm Taf.

applicant...

“Nearly two thirds of the way through the pro-gramme, and I am even more excited about my future possibilities than when I first joined the course. The amount of information you learn and the networking opportunities is immeasurable. It has certainly helped me grow as a person, as well as understand my true passions within the NHS.” Victoria Richards
“The programme promises a wealth of opportunity to expand knowledge, experience and skill set, but it also allows the chance to make a real, tangible difference within an organisation that has become an integral part of Welsh culture.” - Elen Russell
“From shadowing Porters as they walk for what
seems like miles across the hospital to sitting in the passenger seat of an ambulance as it hurtles to a 999 call 6” During the course of the scheme there have been countless occasions where I’ve been wowed by the variety of roles of NHS staff and the doors that the graduate trainee scheme has opened for me to explore this. The clinical side of the scheme, for someone like me with a background in retail management, always has the wow-factor and consistently inspires me to want to contribute to this
and also improve it for everyone”. - Callum Monckton

A big impact made by YOU!
Why did you decide to apply?
I decided to apply for the Graduate Growth Trainee Management pro-
gramme as this looked like a robust
training programme for exposure to various management roles.
Although I had previously worked for the health board I felt I needed to
understand more about healthcare
and the organisation in its wider context. I just had to apply.
Do you have a memorable mo-
ment?
I have experienced many memorable moments, far too many to list,
throughout the programme such as
the 8 weeks cooks tour, witnessing first-hand how amazing our staff
are, and my involvement in a public health campaign ‘baby teeth do
matter’. I dressed as a giant tooth meeting and greeting children and
their families, ironic really as my
biggest fear is the dentist. Most of all my memorable moment has been
the opportunity to network internally and externally with many
hardworking, caring individuals. It is
very difficult to walk into the hospital without bumping in to at least 5
people along the way, which is brilliant.
What impact have you had?
During the two years on the programme I believe I have made
an impact in each area I have
visited, sometimes a small impact, sometimes a large. The programme
has encouraged me to do this by being myself, enthusiastic,
personable and demonstrating a
willingness to undertake any new or existing areas of work.
What have you learned about
yourself since star%ng the scheme?
Since starting the programme I have developed many leadership and
management skills along the way
but most importantly the programme has given me the confidence and
resilience in myself and my abilities, in undertaking a future in healthcare management.
What’s your ambi%on for your own
future?
The graduate programme has been an excellent learning curve and
applying was the best decision I
made. I have been successful in gaining a promotion since
completing the programme where I am working as an Operational
Support Manager in Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Sexual
Health. I will be starting my MSc in
September 2018 and I am looking forward to spending a long and
exciting career within Cwm Taf.
Abi’s story
Cwm Taf’s first cohort of Graduate Growth Trainee Managers successfully completed the
programme at the end of January 2018 and have all moved into new posi$ons in the
health board. Here are Abi’s comments about her experience on the programme.
