RECTOR’S REFLECTIONS
The Divine Exchange…
One of my favorite Easter stories is called “The Ragman” written by a Lutheran
minister and professor of creative writing by the name of Walter Wangerin. It is
a parable that powerfully communicates the divine exchange of human
brokenness and sin for the new life and redemption available in Jesus Christ. The
Christ figure in the story is the ragman, a person who goes through the streets
of the city exchanging clean, new rags for old, dirty ones. As the divine exchange
occurs, the wounds and brokenness that the old rags had covered on each
person are replaced with the healing and wholeness that the new rags of Christ
bring.
What a wonderful metaphor this is for us as we journey through Lent towards
the celebration of the paschal mystery of new life in our Lord’s resurrection. The
old rags of our Lenten repentance are exchanged for the new robes of God’s
forgiveness through the resurrected Christ. Of course, we still have to travel the
darkest days and hours of Jesus life before we can arrive at the resurrection. And
it is important not to rush through the pain of the Passion in order to get to the
celebration of Easter because it is in the journey that God does his work in us.
The apostle Paul sums it up well in the sixth chapter of his letter to the Romans
when he says, “Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death,
so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we
too might walk in newness of life.”
I look forward to continuing the journey with you as we anticipate the divine
exchange at the end of our Lenten journey.
