O ften times, a lot of our writer’s anxiety c an be attributed to situational fac tors. Do you periodically worry about impressing your peers, your professors, or even yourself with your writing? This c an result in negative emotions, reduced c onc entrative ability, a reduc tion in c ognitive func tioning, smaller attention spans, etc . A ll of whic h don’t help writing!

What is writer’s anxiety?

It is imperative that you rec ognize that writing is a c omplex proc ess. But you must also remember that you are a student and that failures here or there will define your writing journey and in turn make you a stronger writer. So: • Prac tic e!!! • Recognize when you’re experimenting

with a new writing genre • A pplaud yourself when you suc c eed!

But don’t forget to empower yourself!

C ollaboration! Talk to your peers, instruc tors, friends, or family about what stresses you out. D isc uss your ideas, your proc ess, and even share writing piec es that have failed O R suc c eeded. W hile it is important to get a variety of opinions, also find someone who can look at your work c onsistently and note your progress and/or things you need to develop.

Your anxiety can manifest in a multitude of forms:

• Physiologically through tension, nervousness, & anxiety

• Mentally/Behaviorally through proc rastination, avoidance, & bullying oneself

• Soc ially through fearing judgment from one’s peers or professors

Sometimes just taking a deep breath is a great first step.
