‘Good’archiveseabhworkshop

eabhincooperationwithFondazione1563perl’ArteelaCulturadellaCompagniadiSanPaoloandUPIER(UsesofthePastinInternationalEconomicRelations)114June2018,Torino,ItalyThisone-dayworkshopisdesignedforfinancialinstitutions’archivists,researchersandpotentialusers.Howcanarchivespreparetheircollectionsofinformationinawaythatputsthemtotheirbestuse?Howdoresearchersusearchivecollections?Aretherenewwaysthattheycanbeusedbyfinancialinstitutionsthemselvesastheyfacechallengesofthepresentandfuture?Howcanthehistoricalrecordsbemadeaccessibletoandexploitedbyawideraudience?Howcanarchiveshelpustoreflectonlegacyofthesocialpurposesthatinspiredtheoriginsofmanyfinancialinstitutionsandtheroleofbanksandfinanceinsociety?ManybanksinItaly,theNetherlands,Germanyandpresumablyothercountrieshadsocialbusinessmodelsinthe19thcenturywhichtheygaveupinthe20thcenturyandwhichnowseemtobemakingare-appearance.ThepublicbanksofItalyforexampleoriginatedinthe16thcenturymodelsofMontidipietà(pawnshops)inordertopreventusuryorluoghipii(acharitableinstitutionbystatutes).Thesecharitiesweretheirshareholdersandcontributedtomaintaintheirsocialorientationandindependenceuntilthe1990s. Thearchivesoftheseinstitutionsareoftenhugeandholdimmensetreasuresofinformationfromextendedperiodsoftime.Periodicallythesetreasuresbecomeobscuretomostresearchers,knowntoahandfulofspecialistsalone.Thisworkshopaimstopresentmaterialsoffinancialinstitutionswhosebusinessesaimedatawidersocialgoalbeyondprofit–ororiginatedinthesocialneedsoftheirregionsatthetime.Ultimately,wewanttotracedownmaterialsthatcanshowsuccessesand/orfailuresofsocialenterprisesoverthecourseofhistory.Cantheiruniquelessonsbelearned?Whatisthelegacyofthese‘goodbanks’records?Whattheirrelevancetoday?Cantheuseoftheserecordsraisepublicawarenessofa‘new’wayofbanking?Caniteventuallyleadtothere-developmentofethicalandsocialfinance?Whatarethebusinessbenefitsoftheserecords?WhatistheirPRpotential?Cantheycontributetoincreasingthepublicreputationofaninstitution?Cantheyleadtotherepositioning/toabetterpositioningoftheHistoricalArchiveswithinthecompanyitself?Inshort,wewouldliketoencouragepresentationsofarchivematerialsofthefollowingbusinesses:

• non-profitbankingandfinancemodelswithsocialorenvironmentalgoalsintheirstatutes• publicbanks• bankingfoundations
