Goal Setting 101
“If you are not making the progress you would like to make and are capable of
making, it is simply because your goals are not clearly
defined.”- Paul J. Meyer
Goal Setting Sucks!
• It actually works!
• We often work on the goals of others.
• Too much setting, not enough action.
• Often acts outside of the purpose for our
lives.
• Most goals are about what we want to
have, do, or accomplish.
• Goal Setting should be about who we
want to become.
“Goal setting begins with an awareness of where you are right now and a desire to change the future.”

• A prelude to action.
• A course to take.
• An expression of your strengths.

Goals Are…
Dreams vs. Goals
• Dreams come before goals.
• Goal must have a target date.
• Dream Big!
• Develop a dream list!
• Where do you want to go? Who do you want to become? What do you want to learn?
Goal Setting Process
• Develop life mission/purpose statement.• Write specific goals that support this statement.• List benefits of achieving goals.• Anticipate possible obstacles and find solutions.• Write detailed action steps and deadlines to achieve the goal.
• Integrate action steps into your own planning system.
• Determine method of tracking progress.• Write affirmations to support your belief.• Develop a visualization that reminds you of the goal.
• Goal = What I want?• Benefit = Why I want it?• Obstacles = Why don’t I have it? • Obstacles to every goal…• Solutions – Easy to do, easy not to
do.• Action steps – • Tracking – Keep score, you manage
what you measure.• Is it worth it?• Affirmation – Overcome “stinkin
thinkin.”• Visualization – See it to be believe it.
