Sue McEvoy had progressed from office juniorto senior manager over a 30 year career withinthe banking sector. More recently in her career, she was faced with the uncertainty and shock ofbeing made redundant. Sensing the opportunityto complement her wealth of work experiencewith a new qualification, Sue joined the MScManagement at Glyndwr University.

One of the Universitys newest postgraduatecourses, the MSc Management takes a broadlook at strategic, operational and financialmanagement at senior level within business. Mostcaptivating for Sue was the introduction to thetheories and practicalities of people managementand change management. So much so that thetopic provided the focus for her dissertation, assessing issues of change within a small

    business in the Wrexham area.

Learning in-depth about leading and developingpeople was fascinating. Its something which Iddone throughout my career without ever reallyreflecting on why I might have taken decisionswhich I did, or understanding why people reactin different ways to different things. People arecomplex and looking at some of the theoriesbehind their behaviour and psychology wasreally interesting.

    MSc Management

Entering the MSc Management with a degreein music from the Open University, backed by astrong track record in the finance sector, Suehad no previous experience of university life but easily overcame the apprehensions andchallenges which she faced.

It gave me a focus. Id been in work all of mylife since leaving school at the age of 17/18and I was a bit lost, but studying here gave mea purpose in life again. When I arrived on myfirst day I was a bit concerned about how Id fitin and a bit concerned about how Id take tostudying again after so long out of education. Imincredibly grateful that I had a brilliant group offellow students to work with, study with and learnfrom. Everyone came together to help each otherregardless of age or experience, making the

study experience a hugely enjoyable one, and wewere backed by support from tutors which wassecond-to-none.

Studying for the MSc has definitely made memore marketable. If you are made redundant likeI was and just sit at home thinking about doingthings I dont think that reflects very well withemployers so Im glad I made the decision tostudy again.

    MA Human Resource Management

Thanks to the course, Ive developed a greaterunderstanding of how human resources can makea real difference to an organisation. I was giventhe opportunity to trial HR Business Partneringwithin my own organisation whilst studying andthe content of the MA, allowing me to link theoryto HR practice within my own workplace. It alsoenabled me to take a critical view on both currentand previous HR practices.

The MA has given me a better understandingof the business aspects of human resourcesmanagement and how these can be appliedin the workplace. I aim to use my professionalknowledge and expertise to support theorganisation as it moves through a period ofchange in structure.
