Editorial
This last weekend I’ve had the pleasure of attending our annual
Alpine Presbytery retreat in Hanmer. Personally, I believe that
this retreat is the most vital activity that our Presbytery engages
in. It is an opportunity to connect with and share with people
from all over our land, from Waimate, to Nelson, to Hokitika, to
Takaka, to Christchurch, and beyond. From our guest speakers
we learn and grow, but perhaps even more importantly as we
connect, we build trust and relationships. We build our culture, “How we do things
around here”, and we grow in our identity with each other and in Christ. The
retreat is open to anyone who is interested, and I’d encourage anyone who is
interested in finding out more to contact Brent or myself.
This year our guest speaker was
Rev. Spanky Moore from the
Christchurch diocese of the
Anglican church. He challenged us
to share our own faith stories,
which became a pathway to discuss
the challenges of cultivating Good
News in the rocky soil of our kiwi
culture. While there are no easy
answers, Spanky shared five
principles that can help us to
navigate new ways of being.
Principles that are more about forming us in the image of Christ, than giving us
helpful information:
Pray together
Eat together
Do mission together
Play together
Share your resources
Our series on Caring for Creation has also been formational as well as
informational. The sermons, the pop-up small group, and especially the visit of
Phil Scadden and the conversation we had together with him. I wonder if these
same principles can help guide us as we search for new ways of being – both as a
church, and as carers of God’s creation.
You can hear Phil’s talk on the sermon page of our website –

July Parish Council Report
We began our gathering with an open session of Mission planning, where we
began reviewing our current activities, and how they relate to our overall
mission. We hope to have a 12 month plan draft to present to the AGM in
August.
Following on from this, our Council meeting began with a devotion from Steph
Holland on Psalm 66. Steph drew inspiration from the words of the Hillsong
United song “So will I” which take us on a journey from creation to salvation.
Her favourite line comes at the end: “You’re the One who never leaves the one
behind.” Inspiration and hope for us all.
Some of the key points from our meeting are summarised below:
The new Zip in Trinity Community Centre kitchen has been installed: in
time for the PSSC Centenary service on the 1st of July
Nominations for Parish Council due in time for our next meeting on the 1st
of August.
Annual reports are now overdue! Please send these to the office if you
have not already done so.
Nominations for PCANZ moderator 2020/21 (no particular order): Rev.
Hamish Galloway, Rev. Dr. Stuart Lange, Rev. Diane Gilliam-Weeks, Rev.
Rose Luxford.
Unfortunately, the work on the church foyer work at St. Stephens has
been delayed. This will not go ahead until October.
Thank you to the Pastoral team for running a successful volunteer’s
lunch, and quiz. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Brent’s report
Our Caring for Creation series has been enjoyable, especially the
“pop-up” study group following the A Rocha “Climate Change”
studies.
The “Safe Hands” workshop run by the Rural Health Alliance was a
reminder to take care of our friends and loved ones as they struggle
with mental wellbeing.
Ashburton, where Brent is Interim Moderator have had bad news
about the earthquake status of their buildings.
Brent has enjoyed hospital and home visits this month.
Rory’s report
Thanks to those involved in installing ceiling insulation in the St.
Stephens hall

Looking forward to A Rocha member Phil Scadden’s public talk on
Saturday 7th July as a culmination of our “Caring for Creation” series
Presbytery and TCMA work has been busy this month. Pleasant
Point are also facing a difficult future with their buildings.
Thanks to those involved in all of our prayer ministries – especially
the prayer chains who do quiet, discreet, and invaluable work on our
behalf.
General Assembly is in Christchurch this year from 3-7 October 2018.
Anyone can visit for the day, and their will be some enriching sessions.
Our commissioners will be Rev. Brent Richardson and Eoin Powell.

We are beginning a series of ‘thumbnails’ on randomly selected parishioners. A series
of clues to the identity are set out below. How quickly can you pick this month’s
choice? Did you get any surprises? Answer on page 8
I was born in Invercargill to Ted and Marion just prior to the great depression.
Started in the Railways as a steam locomotive cleaner and then fireman.
In 1953 I sat and passed the very demanding exams for an engine driver.
Drove the great long coal trains from the Western Southland mines to Waipahi and
as far north as Allanton. These were AB’s and the bigger J engines sometimes with
80 or more coal wagons.
After that, moved to Milton driving the trains hauling the massive cement wagons to
Roxburgh to make concrete for the construction of the Hydro power dam. One
engine could only haul 9 wagons up the Manuka Gorge. Sometimes two engines
grinded and puffed their way up with 18.
I felt I’d like to do something different to engine driving after a while. The hours were
long with many night shifts and sometimes the after work ‘activities’ on a
continuous basis did not suit me.
That’s when I shifted to Timaru in 1957 and bought the Ashbury Fish shop in
partnership with Owen Gould selling fish and chips and fresh fish. Took over on my
own account in 1959. It was 7 days a week and long hours again. Ruth was a great
help – we met when she came into the shop to buy fish bait and got married in
1962 with the ceremony taken by the well-known Chalmers church minister Rev. Ed
Farr.
We sold the fish shop in 1964 and not long after purchased the Hassell Street fish
shop, together with the buildings housing the butcher’s shop and hairdresser.
Moving onward and upward, in 1970 we sold our shop in Hassell Street but kept
the tenanted buildings and bought Lurajud’s Stafford Street fish shop – only 5 days
a week!
I retired in 1988 living in North Street and have been in my present town house in
Grey road for the past 18 years. Since Ruth passed away in 2004, I have tried to
keep up an interest in lawn bowls, (mainly on a social basis now), the Wanderers’
walking group, church activities, family, and my vegetable and flower garden.
How well do you know your fellow parishioners?

A Child’s Prayer
‘Thank You God For all that grows, Thank You for the sky’s rainbows,
Thank You for the stars that shine, Thank You for these friends of mine,
Thank You for the moon and sun, Thank You God for all You’ve done!’
Footnote from the biographer:It is great how …… keeps himself enthusiastically
involved in church activities. He has a strong belief in the practice of getting out
and interacting with people, which I am sure keeps him young and fit. The house
and garden are wonderfully well organised and spotless. I think this stems from his
days keeping the big steam engines spic and span!
Regarding the church, I attended Chalmers Church one Sunday. Janet Wishart made
me feel very welcome. Two days later Rev. Peter Wishart called to see me and that
started my association with Timaru Presbyterian.

24-7 Youth Work is as out-of-class,
extra-curricular emphasis that
supplements and supports existing
school activities. It is about effective
encouragement for young people and
quality service delivery for schools. In
other words, it is youth workers
supporting young people and serving
the school in practical ways. The same
youth workers work in and out of
school, 10 paid hours per week in
school and 10 volunteer hours per
week with the church.
