TNC2011 BoF "Provisioning infrastructure services on-demand (ISOD): beyond Grids and Clouds"
Prague.CZ, May 16th, 2011
Agenda
• GEYSERS: Problem Statement & Project Challenges
• RORA Model & Use Cases
• Service Delivery Framework & Architecture
• NIPS: Network + IT Provisioning Service
6/6/2011 2
Our problem statement
• New emerging applications with highly demanding network & IT resource requirements, but still unable to exploit the potentialities of optical network technologies
• Optical Network layer unaware of applications’ dynamic requirements
• Net & IT resources are being controlled separately without any integration
• Optical infrastructure providers and network operators unable to provide enhanced and customized network services
• Today just simple connection services over generic infrastructures
• Generate opportunities for new business models: • Multiple virtual networks integrated with IT resources offered as a service
• Use of latest advances in network virtualization, physical resource partitioning
• Customized virtual networks supporting dynamic Optical Network + IT provisioning services

The RORA Model
6/6/2011 5
• Based on four components: – Resources, Ownership, Roles, Actors
• It allows: – the decoupling of legacy integrated roles into
independent entities, thus lowering the entry barriers.
– modeling the interactions between the various entities in environments where the underlying resources are shared and each entity holds different rights over a resource

NIPS: Network + IT Provisioning Service
• New connection paradigms – Assisted unicast: quotations about network cost and performance of
[src,dst] pairs
– Restricted anycast: selection from a set of equivalent and explicitly declared IT end-points
– Full [bi-]anycast: IT end-points selection fully delegated to the NCP
• Scheduled/advance reservations • Dynamic service modification, monitoring and recovery
– Cross-layer escalation of monitoring and recovery procedures for global service resiliency
• Computation of energy efficient e2e net+IT paths
A service that allows the dynamic on-demand provisioning of network and IT resources in a single-step, through a set of
seamlessly integrated procedures

NIPS UNI • Beyond a std UNI, towards a Cloud/Service-to-Network interface
• Generalized semantics to describe – the characteristics of IT sites/resources
• i.e. resource types, capabilities and availabilities – E.g. sites, attached services, capabilities and capacities of computing and storage
elements, etc.
– ... and the IT service characteristics
• Workflow descriptions and interaction properties
• SLAs/SLSes
• AA credentials and security context
