Objective
• This unit was created to help students understand the Hispanic culture.
• Some of the objectives the lessons will aim to achieve are:– Students will be able to:
» compare and contrast their school duration, types, dress code, costs, atmosphere and schedule with that of Hispanics
» describe the typical Latino family» recognize the ways in which non- U.S. citizens can achieve U.S.
permanent residency» list reasons why Mexico is at a disadvantage ecomically» describe Latin America’s most popular sport and the effect it has
on it’s people» describe the history of sports during the classic era
…just to name a few.
Purpose
• This unit is intended for a high school classroom and was created to educate students, teachers and school faculty about the Hispanic/Mexican culture.
• This unit is cross-disciplinary and is designed
to be tailored to fit into any
curriculum.
Essential Questions
1. When comparing Latino and U.S.’s family units, what are the differences between them? The roles family members play? The quantity of family members? The relationships and behavior between family members?
2. If you aren’t born a U.S. citizen, how is it that you can gain residency here legally?
3. What is the most popular sport in the Hispanic world and what sport was common in Mexico’s ancient world?
4. How do Latino schools compare to U.S.’s and what effect do you think this has on the Hispanic world.
5. What factors contribute to the fact that Mexico is a third-world country and less developed when compared to the U.S.?
Multi-Disciplinary Capability
• Every lesson has been developed from real life encounters in Mexico– However, each lesson contains course “course content”
sections that can be adapted. – The sections pertain to the curriculum one must cover– These sections are highlighted in blue and should be
replaced according to your curriculum
Lessons
• Centered around building empathy and background knowledge on the reasons Hispanics are in the United States
• Students will be asked to provide opinions and journal about the following topics:
» Schools in the Hispanic world
» The reasons why Mexico is at a disadvantage
» Latin American Family Units
» Sports in the Latin American world
» Laws of Immigration & Role Play
