Eight Germantown High School students got an in-hospi-tal view of healthcare careers during a three week "acade-my" program over the summer.

Several of the students spoke about their experiencesduring a presentation at the Sept. 9 Germantown SchoolBoard meeting.

Germantown High School teacher Diane Seramurexplained the academy program at Community MemorialHospital occurred just before school started, and is similar toacademy programs the hospital conducts with theMenomonee Falls and Hamilton districts.

Under the academy, students go through various rota-tions of hospital operations. The students then gave final pre-sentations before hospital staff members, parents and highschool staff member. The presentations included posters thatwere created by the students.

The Germantown students who participated the acade-my were Mikayla Bardele, Zachary Daniel, Rachel Fleisner,Sydney Langmann, Kelli Paluch, Katharine Shebesta, DrakeWest and Angela Wolter.

Langmann said she entered the programming thinkingshe wanted to be a physician's assistant.

"Luckily, this experience changed my mind. I now realizeI want to be a traveling nurse," she said.

Fleisner said she had an idea about becoming a radiol-ogist and decided to keep that choice for her future careerfield.

"I was pleased to find out I could make it through sur-gery and that was of my highlights," she said.

Bardele said she had no idea what her career path

would be coming into the program but was attracted to the

laboratory, nursing, orthopedics and cancer care fields.Wolter explained her "Hospital 5000" poster, saying it

represents how every part of the hospital works together tocreate one functioning machine. She said she entered theprogram thinking she wanted to pursue a career in psychia-try. However, she became interested in surgery while in the

oan-NuTone in Hartford, spoke to thechool Board Sept. 9 on behalf of

Washington County Jobs Now, which wasrmed in April. The group was formed insponse to the The Washington County

etirement and Departure Intentions Surveyeport which was issued in February. That

report was prepared for the Germantown,Hartford Area and West Bend Area cham-bers of commerce in conjunction withEconomic Development Washington County,Moraine Park Technical College, UW-Washington County and the UW-Extension.

According to the report, 17.5 percent ofsurveyed employees plan to retire within thenext five years, 33.9 percent within the next10 years and 50.9 percent over the next 15years. The report states that the figures are"a surprising figure considering historicalaverages assume one-third of the workforceretiring every 15 years."

"In recent years there have been a num-ber of economic setbacks that have causedus to wonder if a shortage in labor supply is

still plausible. The Washington County find-ings demonstrate there is not only a majorconcern for the supply of skilled workers inthe future, but that the shortage is here todayand will likely remain a critical issue for theforeseeable future," the report stated.

Hostad said he hoped to discuss a col-laborative relationship with the GermantownSchool District and large employers inWashington County. Hostad said there is a"growing gap" forming to the point whereprojections indicate that 15 years from nowthere could be 13,000 more jobs inWashington County than people to fill thosepositions.

"We are very concerned about that,"Hostad said. He said that employers are hav-ing difficulty hiring people because job seek-ers don't have the skills necessary for thepositions.

He said the organization is hoping tomake students aware of the jobs that areavailable in Washington County while talk-ing with educators about the curriculum andeducation that would best prepare studentsfor the workforce.

Hostad said that representatives fromWashington County Jobs Now has held afew meetings and met with administratorsfrom the largest public school districts inWashington County. All the superintendentsat the meeting asked if they could continue tobe part of the initiative.

"We welcome the insight that they can

provide. We think it will provide a great ben-efit to our work going forward," Hostad said.

Family Pet Clinic in Menomonee Falls has beenroviding top-quality veterinary care to a strongase of loyal and satisfied clients for more than 21ears.

I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was a kid;s all I ever wanted to be, said Dr. Scott Fellenz

who opened the clinic in 1992. The clinic featuresour experienced doctors and a knowledgeabletaff of receptionists and veterinary assistants.

Fellenz is a 1987 graduate of the University ofWisconsin-Madison, which was the charter class ofhe new veterinary school. The doctor practiced inMarshfield, Menomonee Falls and New Berlin

efore deciding to open his own clinic. A Falls resi-ent for the past 24 years, he lives with his wife

Arlo, daughters Alexis and Ashtyn, and their familyets.

The other doctors are Dr. Kemberlie Anderson,Dr. Carolyn Bernier and Dr. Dara Morrison-

orgenfrei.Fellenz says his own pets are like my kidsthey

ave greatly enriched my life and the clinic pridesself on protecting the cherished bond betweennimal and human.

Animals are so much more than just pets theseays; they bring so many benefits and positiveesults to owners, and they are often used in hospi-als for therapy, said assistant practice managerackie Helland. We want our clients to understand

hat we know how important their pets are to them.hey are a member of the family and we give themhe same care a human would receive from a doc-or.

The clinic also makes convenience a priority byffering on-site services such as affordable dentistry, igital X-rays, Ultrasounds, chemotherapy for can-er patients and board certified consultations.

We do all these things right here in the clinicnstead of having to send the client to a specialist,Helland said. Dr. Fellenz is excited about offeringew diagnostic procedures such as rhinoscopy tovaluate nasal cavity problems in dogs and digital

dental x-rays.Other services and products offered include:

an on-site pharmacy; senior wellness care; prescrip-tion food such as Iams, Eukanuba, Hills ScienceDiet and Waltham; ACL repairs; and microchipping. Also, pet grooming is now available.

The continuous pursuit of education by the doc-tors and staff is another way the clinic stays on thecutting-edge of the field. This enables them to pro-vide a better quality of care to their patients,Helland said.

Our doctors attend veterinary seminars andsymposiums every year to expand their knowledgebase and be able to give clients the most currentinformation, said Helland.

And community involvement is key, Hellandnoted, sharing how the clinic participates in the vil-lages annual pet fair and assists with the highschools Reality Check business class, teachingstudents the costs and care involved with owning apet. The clinic also makes regular contributions tothe Companion Animal Fund which funds researchinto diseases such as cancer.

Staying involved in the community is veryimportant to us, said Helland, adding that 21 yearsmakes a statement that no verbal proclamation can.

I enjoy practicing in this community because ofthe love people have for their pets, said Fellenz.

It just shows the longevity and loyalty our

clients have shown us and that we have returned tothem, Helland said. Our clients are comfortablewith us and can feel confident that their pets willreceive the best care and that we will be here forthem when they need us.

Family Pet Clinic is located at N73 W13583Appleton Avenuejust west of Highway 41/45across from St. Anthonys Church.

The customer always comes firstat Best Value Kitchen Cabinets LLC.

Opened in February 2012 byPaul Czerwinski, Doug Klaneckyand Nick Myszkowski, the

businesslocated at W141 N9316Fountain Blvd. in MenomoneeFallstakes the arduous process ofkitchen remodeling and turns it intoa pleasant experience.

Pleasing our customer is trulythe most important thing to us,said Klanecky, who with his

partners have over 25 years ofexperience in the business. Thatsall were looking to do.

Best Value Kitchen Cabinetsaccomplishes this objective by

getting the job done in a fraction ofthe time most companies take tocomplete a remodelingprojectand at half the price.

The people who come to us donot want to spend between $40,000and $60,000 on a

kitchen remodel; that is too much oftheir house value, said Klanecky. They are looking to spend morelike $20,000, and that is our solepurposeto do the job at half thenormal remodeling cost.

Offering an extensive selectionof countertop, sink, cabinet, floor

and backsplash optionsseveral ofwhich can be viewed in the BestValue showroomthe companyprides itself on providing top-quality materials that equal its best-of-the-best work ethic.

We dont leave room forerror, Klanecky explained. Weare very careful with costs and verycareful to not make mistakes, andwe dont start working untileverything is ready go, so we areusually done in about four weeks.

For all these reasons, the newbusiness is flourishing as the

referrals continue to pour in.So far we have not had a

customer who has not recommendedus to someone else, Klaneckysaid. Most of our business has

come fromreferrals, andthe best thing a

Germantown Library HistoryIn 1962, long-time Germantown resident and for-

mer bank president Emma Duerrwaechter surprisedthe community by donating $30,000 for a buildingto be used as Germantowns first library. Born in1881, Emma grew up and attended school inGermantown. She followed her father, Philip G.Duerrwaechter, into the family banking business. In1923, Emma was voted director and bank president. She was known as Wisconsins First Lady ofBanking, and remained president of the bank until1959. She passed away in 1969 at the age of 87.

Germantowns first library was built on landdonated by the Germantown Volunteer FireDepartment. With Emma Duerrwaechters generousdonation, an 1,800 square foot library was built onPark Avenue near Firemans Park. In 1960,Germantowns population was 622. Initially thenew library had about 2,000 holding and was openfor 20 hours per week. By the late 1970s, thelibrarys holdings had grown to 19,000 and morespace was needed to provide library service forGermantowns growing population. To this day, theformer library still stands at Firemans Park andcontinues to house the offices of the Germantown

Volunteer Fire Company.By 1980, Germantowns population had

increased dramatically to 10,731. TheDuerrwaechter Memorial Library on Park Streethad outgrown its 1,800 square foot building. In a1981 referendum, taxpayers approved an 8,800square foot library on Village property off MequonRoad. When the new library opened in July of 1982,it had over 19,000 holding and a circulation of 52,398.

Over the next 20 years, the Village of

Germantowns population continued to grow, as didlibrary usage. For example between 1987 and 1996,circulation increased by 61%. In the 2000 census,Germantowns population increased to 18,260. Bythe end of 2001, the librarys holdings had increasedto 83,896, and library circulation reached an all-time high of 202,720.

In 1998, initial approval was given for a newexpandable library facility to be built to the west ofthe current library. The third Germantown Librarybuilding opened in 2002. This 26,000 square footbuilding can be expanded by 13,000 square feet inthe future.
