The Germantown Village Boardpostponed action on a conditional userequest that would have allowed for a150-foot monopole wireless communi-cations tower in the northeast sectionof the village.

The tower is proposed by AT&Tand would be located on a 25-acreparcel at W124 N13185 WasaukeeRoad.

Resident Charlie Tur of Cedar Lanecompared the situation to the movie"Groundhog Day," in which the sameday keeps repeating itself over andover again.

Tur explained that the villagerejected a monopole tower proposednearby 20 years ago.

"It cost many of us time, effort andmoney to defeat that proposal," Tursaid. He then asked how many homeswould be nearby if that tower hadbeen approved. Tur said that 13 yearsago a tower was proposed nearby butfollowing objections from residents acompromise in which the tower waserected within a silo was reached.

"Are we telling the future residentsthat we are building a tower farm in

northeast Germantown or are weencouraging residential develop-ment?" Tur asked.

Marty Peck, a member of the PlanCommission, noted there are two tow-ers nearby that are disguised as silos.Peck said the compromise reached 13years ago came after the village hireda consultant to research the matter.

"The property value concern is a

valid concern we have right now," hesaid.

He also questioned why AT&T did-n't seek other options to co-locate onnearby towers and said "there's onlytwo dozen people who would beaffected by this." He said the companycame to Germantown after Mequon

Area volunteers are needed for thennual Germantown Youth Futures Lock-int for Friday, May 10, 6 to 11 p.m., atennedy Middle School.

The event–which has a theme of “Outerpace”–will include carnival games, laserg, bungee basketball, dance, open gymnd more.

A minimum of 25 chaperones are need-d for both shifts–5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and 8

11 p.m. Those who are interested canoose one or both shifts. Chaperonesould be at least 18 years old and out ofgh school.

High school volunteers are also needed

to run games, collects tickets, sell conces-sions and oversee events, as well as for setup from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Interested teensshould stop by the high school’s YouthFutures during lunch April 29 and May 1.Assignments will be given on a first-come,first-served basis, but an effort will be madeto accommodate requests. A maximum of 60volunteers will be selected; no walk-ins theday of the event.

The lock-in is the major fundraiser for theyouth organization that promotes substance-free living among teens.

posal. Resident Richelle Barker said the vil-lage needs to improve its current wirelesscapability and prepare for the future of wire-less services.

"The tower at the height it is currently pro-posed is an important part of AT&T's networkthat will improve our current wireless capa-bility and expand the broadband coverage,"Barker said.

During board discussion, Trustee DavidBaum said that at the Plan Commission heasked for maps showing coverage if AT&T

Trustee Art Zabel sought to revise themotion to reduce the tower to 99 feet and

have it disguised within a silo.Trustee Terri Kaminski noted she repre-sents the area as a trustee and resides withina mile of the tower site. She said she has hadproblems making calls from her residencewith another carrier.

"I can't talk at all in my house," Kaminski

said, noting she has to go ocalls on her cell phone. She one of four people now relyphones for phone use instealand line.

She added that "this is ability to communicate andhave this capability that wesurvive on."

Kaminski said she is seecompromise to the matter to

sites and tower heights. VDean Wolter added that "whheard tonight is that the residcare to see a 150-foot towthat's what we've heard loubody that is in that area."

The Germantown VIllage Board lastweek approved the selection of a new firm todo work on the extension of utilities to theSpassland Park Shelter.

According to information from villagestaff, the village approved a contract with GoContractors LLC Feb. 13 to do the work at acost of $31,998. However, the company con-tacted the village March 11 and stated itwould not be able to do the work "for reasonof acquiring other work by other owners,"according to an April 16 memo by villageEngineer Brionne Bischke. The companyagreed to settle with the village for breakingthe contract a cost of $2,000.

The board then agreed to award the con-tact to BCF Construction Corp. at a $35,571.Trustee Art Zabel noted the village hasagreed to some work to keep the projectunder budget.

In other matters:•The board agreed to the rezoning of

land on Bonniwell Road from the A-1 to the

A-2 Agricultural zoning district. Also, theboard approved a two-lot certified surveymap. The request will allow the property,which is owned by the John J. Kohl RevocableTrustee, to be divided from a 24.75 acre lot

According to the district, thetechnologies allow the teacher to see howthe student is doing on a term paper andgive instant feedback to the student.

•Chromebooks — lightweight laptop

computers that run the Chrome operatingsystem — are being used at Kennedy MiddleSchool in conjunction with Google Apps.Also, Chromebooks for Math Interventions isbeing used at MacArthur ElementarySchool.

Mielke explained that the district is in atechnology planning year, "so we are work-ing to align our goals for where we aregoing in terms of technology with districtinstructional goals."

He added that the ideas for differentuses of technology and instruction is comingfrom the teaching staff.

"The teachers doing these pilots are verymuch ready to go and excited to try newthings in their classroom. Administrators pro-vide support and help spread the word onsuccesses." he said .

Mielke later added that "in any new ini-tiative there will be a learning curve. Oneteacher commented to me how with oneclass she didn't have to give any directions,they just went to it."

District pilot programs usetechnology in different ways

The Going Green Committee atommunity Memorial Hospital–whichegan in the summer of 2008–has under-ken many initiatives to stay as “green” asossible.

The group began by assembling hospitalpresentatives involved in the waste, clean-g, energy usage, food preparation andedical supply areas. They first brain-ormed to see what they had alreadyccomplished and then looked ahead toture changes.

Some of these efforts include:• CMH began recycling surgical blue

raps (the wraps that are on the sterilized

quipment in surgery) and hard health careastics (irrigation bottles, gauze containers,c.) in October 2012.

• In November, a large project involvinge purchase of new beds, tables andhones for patient rooms was successfullyompleted. The project has allowed staff toerform their jobs more efficiently whileproving the patient experience. It alsocluded ways to repurpose or recycle thems that were removed. When more than

50 new beds were brought in, the old bedsere traded back to Green River Medical, aompany that specializes in redistribution fored medical equipment. The old beds wentthe Dominican Republic; they were distrib-

ed in and around the Santo Domingo area

to small hospitals and clinics.• This spring, the hospital will be replac-

ing the parking lot lights on the hospital cam-pus with new LED technology. They will onlyuse about half the energy that the existinglights use and still give off the same light.

• For the past 30 years, kitchen greasehas been saved and picked up to be madeinto soap.

• Old pens, markers, highlighters andmore are turned into a company that makesa donation to a charity of one’s choice.
