Biographical Sketch
George E. Post was born in 1838, in New York. He joined the City College of New
York where he earned his BA in 1854, his MA in 1857, and his MD in 1860. One year
later, he went on to earn his diploma in theology from the Union Theological Seminary
of the Presbyterians. In 1863, Dr. Post was sent to Syria, by the "American Board of
Commissioners for Foreign Missions”. Stationed in Tripoli, Post started practicing
medicine, and took up the study of Arabic. He joined the Syrian Protestant College
(SPC) in 1868 as professor of surgery. He played an important role in the foundation
of the School of Medicine at the SPC, and would later on become one of the pioneers
of anesthesia in the Arab world.
Post was a man of many talents and his skills spread over many different fields,
including medicine, botany, theology, and architecture. Not only did he teach and
practice surgery, specializing in the treatment of eye cataracts, but he also was a pioneer
in medical research, publishing articles in several journals and serving as the editor of
two medical journals, namely “ أخببب بببة ببب ببب ببب” (Medical News) and “ الببببببب ببب ببب” (the
Physician).Of all his talents, interests and skills, Botany was his favorite pursuit. As a
botanist, he contributed to the study of vegetation in the Middle East publishing two
seminal world, namely, the “Flora of the Middle East” [1884] and “Flora of Syria,
Palestine and Sinai” [1896] which became a reference in the field.
Post’s theological interests culminated with the production of the first Arabic
concordance of the Bible. His creative skills and interest in architecture and urban
planning drove him to design his own residences in Beirut and Aley, as well as several
buildings on the SPC campus, including Post Hall (The Museum Building) and the Old
Medical Building. To honor Post’s service and dedication to the SPC, the AUB museum
building was named after him.
Post was married to Sarah Read and had six children: Arthur, Robert, Alfreda, Bertram
Van Dyck, Francis and Wilfred. In 1896, he received an LLD from the University of
Aberdeen and the same honorary degree from New York University. The German
Government bestowed upon him the decorations of the Red Eagle and Knights of
Jerusalem; the Turkish Government gave him the "Order of Othmaniyeh" and he was
also honored by the Ducal House of Saxony. He passed away on September 29, 1909.
