1 About This Manual
1.1 Introduction
This manual uses the 250Watt amplifier configuration to out line AMPAC’s high powered, stand alone Occupant Warning System.

2 Evacuation Control
The EV20 is a compact single zone occupant warning module that produces
Alert and Evacuation signals
An output that will drive up to 20-watts of speaker load
Is supplied with a switch control card; and
Can be installed into most fire alarm control panels or used as a stand-alone unit in its own enclosure

2.1 EV20 Audio Line Driver
The EV20 is also supplied in a modified form for use as an audio line driver for larger amplification systems. Supplied in this form the 20watt amplification stage is not populated on the PCB.

2.3 Operation
If an FACP input is received when the rotary switch is in the AUTO position the EV20 will begin to output the Evacuation signal as the factory default setting of the Alert “time out” period is 0. If the alert signal is required the “time out” duration of the “time out” is determined by the setting of the 4 way DIL switch SW1.
The set duration is termed the changeover timeout and ranges from 0 seconds to a maximum of 300 seconds. If the time out is set to 0 sec then the alert tone is bypassed and the evacuation signal commences immediately. The operator can manually stop the signal sequence by turning the rotary switch to the ISOLATE position.

2.4.2 Verbal Message
The optional verbal message board (Product code 222-0026) is mounted on standoffs to the main board. Audio and control interconnection to the main board is by way of a 5 way IDC cable.

3.1.1 Controls
When the control switch is in;
AUTOMATIC - occupant warning signals, and if applicable the verbal message, is outputted to the amplifier system in use when it receives a “warning system” signal from the FACP.
ISOLATE – the occupant warning system is isolated from the FACP “warning system” signal and even if the signal is present there will be no output.
PUBLIC ADDRESS – the occupant warning system can be used locally as an optional PA system. The “press to talk” switch is mounted into the side of the microphone.
MANUAL EVACUATION – the occupant warning signal/s will be transmitted over the system.
3.1.2 Indicators
- In the event of an open or short circuit speaker line the LINE FAULT indicator (yellow) will be illuminated
- The LED will be illuminated (yellow) when the occupant warning system is isolated

4 125/250/500Watt Amplifier
Note: For the purposes of this manual the 250W amplifier is highlighted in this explanation. Both
models have the same specifications and wiring configurations except for power output.

The output power stage is thermally monitored enabling automatic operation of a long life computer style cooling fan to "off", "low" or "high" air flow through a specially designed tunnel Heatsink. In quiescent or ordinary cycle paging mode the fan is inoperative.
Over temperature sensing is employed to shut down the amplifier in extreme over heat conditions, e.g. extreme over load and /or over drive misuse. Re–start is automatic once normal temperatures are attained.
The output voltage is limited to 110V maximum RMS voltage irrespective of load impedance to prevent damage to speaker load. Standard 100V line PA amplifiers can deliver up to 180 volts or more under conditions of high drive and very light loading. This output over voltage can quickly destroy any loudspeakers connected. In the event of an overload, the output current is limited by the internal circuitry, thus reducing the output voltage at the speaker terminals. The front panel ‘Overload’ LED flashes, indicating a fault with the speaker circuit.

4.2 Audio Connections
The audio Line Input is via the 3 pin XLR socket on the rear panel. This is a 320mV line level balanced signal. Pin out is printed on the rear of the amplifier.
A balanced, Line Out XLR plug is also available for passing the audio signal on to more amplifiers.
4.3 Speaker Connections
Speakers with a total impedance of 4 to 16 ohms, or speakers fitted with a line transformer may be connected.
Always ensure that the total load of the fitted speakers does not exceed the rated output of the amplifier otherwise damage may result.
Always be especially careful to avoid any short circuits and connections to the wrong terminals.
4.4 Power Supply
Ensure power is switched off at the front panel of the amplifier. Connect either mains power to the IEC socket with the supplied lead, or 24V DC to the terminal connections. As high currents may be drawn (possibly 18 amps) when operating from a 24V DC power supply, confirm the capacity of the DC power supply used.
4.5 Battery Charging Function
To operate the battery charging function a link must be made between the two terminals on the back of the unit (marked as “Charging resistor”). This activates the charging circuit and provides a nominal 24VDC 300mA trickle charge to the battery connected when 240V mains is present. When the mains fails, the amplifier is seamlessly powered from the battery.
4.6 Operation
Confirm all connections are correct. Turn volume on the rear panel of amplifier down. Switch on the power at the front panel. Slowly increase the volume on the amplifier to a suitable audio level.
The Overtemp LED on the front panel indicates the amplifier has shutdown due to excessive heat build-up and/or excessive load on the speaker outputs. The Overload LED indicates excessive load is connected to the amplifier.
The Peak LED indicates when the peak limiting is in operation and the Signal LED is provided to indicate when an input signal is present.
Adequate ventilation is required for the amplifier to work within its rated limit. Ensure the vents and fans are free of obstructions at all times. For the 250W model we recommend that a 1U Vented panel be placed between amplifiers to aid air flow.

4.7 Trouble Shooting
If the REBACK Phase 4 amplifier fails to deliver the rated performance, check the following:
No Power, No Lights
Make sure amplifier power switch is on. Make sure mains power switch is on at the wall. Check the mains and DC fuse. Replace with only the correct type and rating.
Distorted Output
Check that the speaker type is correct for the output that you are using (i.e. 4-16Ω, 70V or 100V line). Check for any short circuits on the speaker line. Check speaker line impedance. Note: you must use an impedance meter to measure this. See table below for load details.

Very Low Output Volume
Make sure that the input is the correct level (check for shorted connectors). Check for any short circuits on the speaker line.
Continually Blows Fuses
Make sure that the speaker line is not shorted. Check speaker types, ratings and if on correct output.
Amplifier Keeps on Cutting In & Out
Make sure that there is adequate ventilation around the amplifier. Check the vent slots on the front are not covered or blocked and the fan on the rear is functioning correctly. Check also speaker types, ratings and for any short circuits on the speaker line.

5 Line Montoring Unit
This module has been designed to monitor the integrity of 100V Line speaker circuits. It is connected between the amplifier output and the speaker circuit. The module will detect one of three speaker line conditions. (Normal, Short Circuit or Open Circuit). LED indication is provided for each condition. A switched output is provided for each of the fault conditions. These may be used for sounding an alarm or muting the input of the amplifier to prevent excessive current draw in the event of a short circuit. Several modules may be connected to one amplifier for multi-zone installations. To function correctly, the speaker circuit must be wired on a loop-in, loop-out basis with a 100K Ohm end-of-line resistor fitted across the speaker line at the last transformer.
Note: All speakers must be fitted with a 22µF Bi-Polar capacitor fitted on the input of the
transformer.

5.2 Connection
Mount the module within the amplifier or an appropriate enclosure.
Connect a nominal 24V DC supply (15 - 35V DC) positive pin 1, negative pin 2. The output of the amplifier is connected to the “IN” terminals pins 3 + 4. The speaker line is connected to pins 5 + 6. Pins 7, 8 and 9 are used for monitoring an alarm condition.

Note: pins 7+9 are only rated at 100mA. For driving loads larger then 100mA use a 12V

5.3 Speaker Connection
For correct operation the speakers must be wired in a “loop in” “loop out” basis. “T” connections are not permitted. Each speaker must be fitted with a 22µf bipolar capacitor to prevent DC flowing through the speaker transformer. See PDS218-0008 and 0028 for suitable speakers for this application. At the last speaker, the speaker line must be terminated with an end of line (EOL) resistor valued at 100K.
The module continuously sends a DC signal down the speaker line looking for the 100K EOL resistor. If this is present the OK (green) LED lights.
If the 100K is not found i.e.: open circuit the OPEN CIRCUIT (Red) LED lights.
If the EOL resistor is lower than 100K the SHORT CIRCUIT (Yellow) LED lights.
This signal will not interfere with any audio program being sent to the speakers.
When a fault develops the appropriate LED lights and an output appears at either pin 7 or 9. When either pin 7 or 9 receives an output, this could be used to sound an alarm or operate a relay etc.
Several modules can be connected to the output of one amplifier where several speaker circuits are installed. This way each speaker line can be monitored independent of the others.
