FY13 & FY14 Biannual Report
2 STRATHMORE | FY13 & FY14 Biannual Report
Nearing a decade in the Music Center, FY 2013 & FY 2014 saw Strathmore really hit its stride, reaching out to new audiences, raising up the next generation of artists, and bringing audiences closer to what matters in life—experiences that entertain, educate, and transform.
Strathmore Children’s Chorus enjoyed its first full season, which included exponential growth to embrace a community hungry to explore voice as a vehicle for artistic expression. Choristers joined artists in the Music Center concert hall for touching collaborations that struck at the core of our mission and created moments they’ll never forget.
Indeed, the Music Center swelled with a season of performances focused on artists whose mastery elevates their art forms—including organist Cameron Carpenter, mandolinist Chris Thile, pianist Maurizio Pollini, vocalist Kathleen Battle, and fiddler Alasdair Fraser. Music Center presentations of Pilobolus Dance Theater and the musical Bring It On were examples of Strathmore stretching the capabilities of its venues. Productions of opera company Urban Arias and the campus-wide Puppets Take Strathmore festival saw us testing the versatility of our spaces in innovative ways. This philosophy extended to immersive, non-traditional visual art exhibitions in the Mansion that spoke to new audiences by exploring relatable themes through unexpected mediums—such as the medical avatar in Pulse: Art and Medicine and the interactive installation “LanScapes” in What’s Up: New Technologies in Art.
The Jazz Samba Project was the convergence of all these influences, celebrating the landmark Jazz Samba album by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, in prismatic and scholarly detail with more than 20 concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and family events. In partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Strathmore convened experts and lions of Brazilian music to touch all stripes of its community in meaningful ways, culminating in a concert by Sergio Mendes with Eliane Elias and a re-envisioned performance of the Jazz Samba album from start to finish.
