“ Wherever you are, it is your friends who make your world.”

William James

I have learned so much from Bob I don’t know where to start! He is a well-traveled man who has been all over America. We both have a love for nature and animals, so he shares with me all of the gems our country has to offer. If you ask him about the music he loves, prepare to be amazed! ”

ANNIE

M y FriendshipWorks volunteer Jae and I have spent many Saturday afternoons drinking coffee and eating countless Triple Ginger Snaps.

We are an improbable pair. I am a 4’11” grey-haired childless nonagenarian from New York, a retired teacher of literature now living in a senior residence. Jae is a smiling 6’2” young man of Korean descent devoted to science.

I have occasionally asked Jae to do a small task I can no longer manage. Mostly we talk, crossing the boundaries of time, geography, culture. Of course, we also discuss what old age feels like.

It has been a rich give and take. We are no longer volunteer and client. We have become friends. FriendshipWorks. Yes!”

MY FRIEND,

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2019, 6:00 PM, BOSTON PARK PLAZA Cocktails, Dinner, Awards, and Concert

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is the oldest continuously operating in-home medical service in the country, exemplifying every day its extraordinary commitment to the elders in our community. It is a leader in advocating for interdisciplinary health services. BMC has made possible and become the home for programs such as Elders Living at Home and the Centenarian Project. Boston Medical Center has been a dynamic partner in FriendshipWorks’ mission and work since our inception in 1984. The BMC Geriatric Program has helped identify and refer elders to our Friendly Visiting, Friendly Helping, and Medical Escort programs. Boston Medical Center has been a treasure and a catalyst for outstanding personal elder health care for the City of Boston.

about

FRIENDLY VISITING: we match volunteers with older adults for weekly companionship, offering friendship and assistance with essential tasks one friend might do for another in need. One part of our Friendly Visiting program includes “walking buddies,” combining exercise and companionship during visits.

MEDICAL ESCORTS: a “door-through-door” service where volunteers accompany elders to their medical appointments, remaining with them throughout the entire visit to help each elder navigate medical centers, pick up prescriptions, and advocate for services.

FRIENDLY HELPING: volunteers provide one-time and short-term assistance to elders who have a specific need and no one to help them. The tasks we help with vary, and can include activities like packing, organizing, and shopping.

PETPALS: wagging tails of dogs and purring of cats bring joy and laughter to elders living in long-term care through our pet visitation program. Animals and their owners interact with residents.

LA CADENA DE AMISTAD: (The Chain of Friendship): our bilingual neighborhood chapter was developed in collaboration with local elders and health and human service agencies to

serve the unique needs of the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. La Cadena de Amistad offers culturally sensitive Medical Escort and Friendly Visiting services in Spanish.

MUSICWORKS: this program brings the joy of music to elders, offering the opportunity to gather and socialize while listening to and making music together.

FriendshipWorks was founded in 1984 when 20 Boston-area congregations and health-care organizations came together to create an interfaith coalition dedicated to meeting the needs of frail and isolated seniors. For 35 years, FriendshipWorks has been a pioneer in implementing simple and effective solutions to the serious health risks posed by social isolation in the elder community. We serve elders who are most at risk of social isolation and exclusion: those who live alone, are low income, have chronic health conditions, including residents of elder housing, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Since our 30th Anniversary Gala, FriendshipWorks has doubled the number of elders served. Recently, we were one of four winners of the international In Good Company: 2018 Optimal Aging Challenge, given to organizations demonstrating leadership and innovation in reducing social isolation and loneliness in older adults.

FriendshipWorks’ mission is to reduce social isolation, enhance quality of life, and preserve the dignity of older adults in Greater Boston. We accomplish this mission by recruiting and training volunteers of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds who provide friendship, advocacy, education, assistance, and emotional support. Our vision is to end elder isolation.

35th Anniversary Gala

MY FRIEND,Thursday,

November 21, 2019

THE NEED IS CRITICAL Social isolation destroys lives. It has become a leading health crisis for older adults in our country today. It hurts the heart and soul of older adults, and for some it is deadly. The mortality risk associated with isolation is equal to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and exceeds the mortality risk associated with obesity. Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are cited as strong predictors of negative health outcomes such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and depression.

Over 300,000 older adults in Massachusetts are living alone; please join us in working to prevent their isolation and alleviate their loneliness.
